EMIRIEnergy Materials Industrial Research Initiative

EMIRI

EMIRI’s aim is to raise awareness of the needs of the advanced materials sector for sustainable energy applications and clean air in the context of the forthcoming Horizon 2020 framework programme

The backbone of the initiative for sustainable energy will be the SET Plan Materials Road Map to be published in November 2011 which covers materials research as well as pre-commercial pilot plant demonstrators

In addition, via the SET Plan, EMIRI will draw upon several of the KETs e.g. Advanced materials, Nano materials and Photonics….

It will be industry driven in terms of defining the long term strategy and priorities, however it will remain inclusive with respect to all the stakeholders in the sector (ETPs, Industry Associations, Research associations)

It will be founded by a core group of leading motivated industrial organisations. The statutes however will allow new members and encourage a broad cross section of company / organisation profiles (including SMEs)

EMIRI will explore mechanisms to implement its ambitions. The first of these will be to review together with the stakeholders and the EC the feasibility of creating a PPP that will achieve the goals of EMIRI.

Goals and ambitions of EMIRI

Participating in EU framework funding schemes represents an important supplementary source of funding tied to a well thought out, long term, supported strategic framework

The EC has committed to simplify the Horizon 2020 programme and make it more flexible with shorter lead times to start up to respond to industry‘s past concerns and future needs

Should a PPP model be adopted, the following benefits can be assumed:

Proven successful model Research agenda corresponds to industries key priorities Industry commits to supporting the agenda EC commits to supporting the programme for its duration allowing consistent medium term research programmes and planning to be

undertaken by industry

The commitment by major EU industrial players will bring influence to bear on MSs to adopt at least parts of the SET Plan objectives and eventually participate in or harmonise the different funding programmes

Commitment has to be matched by industry to participate in the calls. Not honouring this commitment will harm one’s image at EU and MS level subsequently.

Being a founder member of a PPP, allows you to pro actively participate in the debate about longer term strategic research as well as anticipate the priorities

To benefit from EU consortiums a company needs to be pro-active and even willing to coordinate a call for a topic of strategic importance

“Consortium” implies sharing results / IP – this is manageable but needs to be well prepared

This proposal is on a very tight schedule…………..
