    Week 1- Introduction

  • The Bologna Declaration The Bologna Declaration (full title: European Higher Education Area. Joint

    Declaration of the European Ministers of Education convened in Bologna on 19 June 1999) was signed by 31 representatives of 29 EU member states and ascension candidates.

    It declares that by 2010 the following aims shall be reached: A system of easily readable and comparable degrees shall be introduced,

    supported by the implementation of the Diploma Supplement. Higher education course systems shall be based on two consecutive cycles: the

    undergraduate cycle, lasting three years, shall qualify students for employment, whereas the graduate cycle shall lead to Master's and/or doctorate degrees.

    In order to ensure student mobility through the transferability of their achievements, a credit system similar to ECTS shall be launched; credits shall also be obtainable in non-HE contexts such as life-long learning.

    Student mobility and free movement shall be promoted. European co-operation in quality assurance shall be established. The European dimension shall be promoted in HE through curricula, inter-

    institutional co-operation and mobility schemes for both students and teachers/researchers.

  • Award Category-Bologna Agreement

    In 2000, the Lisbon Agenda set out the goal of making the EU the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-driven economy in the world by 2010. This goal is being realized through the Bologna Process by the creation of a European area of higher education and by the Copenhagen Process for the vocational training sector. In both processes the aim is to guarantee transferability, transparency and mobility in the education sector. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is the instrument serving to achieve these aims in higher education. A similar system is proposed for vocational training: European Credits for Vocational Education and Training (ECVET).

  • The National Qualifications Authority of Ireland

    The National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI) is the body charged with implementing the Bologna process in Ireland.

    The NQAI devised a system that is called the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

    The framework is unique to Ireland There is an equivalent to this framework in every

    country that is a signatory to the Bologna Agreement.

  • Learning Outcomes For each of the awards they have level

    indicators as to the degree of competence that each person should have when they progress through or graduate from each level. A Synopsisof the learning outcomes for a level nine Masters Degree award is as follows:

    Learning outcomes at this level relate to the demonstration of knowledge and understanding which is the forefront of a field oflearning. The outcomes relate to the application of knowledge, understanding and problem-solving abilities in new or unfamiliar contexts related to a field of study. The outcomes are associated with an ability to integrate knowledge, handle complexity and formulate judgments. Outcomes associated with this level would link with employment as a senior professional or manager with responsibility for the work outputs of teams.

  • Module Energy Conversion and Use

    The module Energy Conversion and Use is designed to provide an introduction to many of the technical modules that are on the programme. It contains within it the following disciplines: Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering Building Services Engineering Physics Chemistry

  • Module Energy Conversion and Use

    This means that it is quite a broad ranging module. Prof. Archie Culp had the following comment:

    The field of energy conversion is so broad and covers so many disciplines that it is a difficult course to teach. Moreover so much research is being carried out in this area that the field is constantly changing. The area is further clouded by political decisions and regulations as well as media bias. [Teaching a course] on energy conversion is like trying to write an objective political or religious treatise on any controversial subject. Each expert involved in the energy programme has a pet energy source and/or conversion system and he or she feels should be exploited.

  • Module Energy Conversion and Use

    However the idea of the module is not that it is so broad ranging that it is of no use to anybody or that it lacks the depth required for a Masters degree. Rather the module is designed to ensure three things: It provides the foundation for understanding the principles that

    underlie energy conversion technologies, which provide most of our power. This is achieved by means of the lectures.

    It is designed to introduce students to the main topic or subject areas in the technical modules in the optional section of the programme (Category B optional modules).

    It enables students to probe deeply into a section or energy conversion technology of their choice. They can pick one that suits their skill or competence area. This is achieved by means of the assignment.

  • Module Energy Conversion and Use The module Energy Conversion and Use ENCO 1104 is exactly

    like most of the other modules in the programme in that the marks are split 50/50 between the assignment and the exam.

    The exam is to be based on the material covered in the lectures,which is to be supplemented by your own independent learning.

    In general the requirement is for a 1:3 ratio between class contact hours and self-directed learning on a part-time programme such as this.

    The assignment is to write a research proposal that is based on a current funding scheme such as the strand one in the DIT.

    It is very important to realise that from the very beginning that 50% of all the mark for this module are allocated to the assignment.
