Winning WaysGramophone Award

It is the Orchestra’s second win in three years,having previously scooped the same award in2009 for Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony,also conducted by Vasily. We were delighted thatour Principal Percussionist, Graham Johns wasable to accept this year’s prestigious award inLondon on behalf of his colleagues in theOrchestra and Vasily, who was in the USA with theSan Francisco Symphony. In making theGramophone Award presentation, BBC Radio 3broadcaster Rob Cowan said;

‘In this particular case, you’ve got a great recordingof a great Shostakovich symphony that doesn’tcome from Russia, but comes from Liverpool.Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonichave given us a performance of such heat andintensity; it conjures the spirit and the atmosphereof this symphony like no other modern recording. Imust say that if the rest of the cycle is like this, it’sgoing to be a benchmark enterprise.’

The recording of Symphony No.10, released inSeptember 2010, is one of the first six volumes in acritically acclaimed cycle of the completesymphonies by Shostakovich scheduled for release. The latest volume, of symphonies Nos. 6 & 12 is nowavailable and this, along with all our recordings isavailable to buy from the Information Desk in theGrand Foyer Bar on concert nights and online atliverpoolphil.com.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and ChiefConductor Vasily Petrenko’s recording of Shostakovich’sSymphony No.10 is theOrchestral Recording of theYear in the Gramophone Awards 2011.

It is nowdelivered at inpatient units across all of MerseyCare’s mental health and learning disability servicesin Liverpool and Sefton, providing nearly 400 musicsessions a year.

Mersey Care commission the orchestra’s musicians toprovide therapeutic music sessions for adults andolder people with mental health problems, dementia, learning disabilities and brain injury, as well aspatients detained in secure units. There are alsoinformal concerts by ensembles from the RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at inpatient unitsand service users are assisted, where practicable, toattend the Orchestra’s rehearsals and concerts atLiverpool Philharmonic Hall.

In awarding their Special Commendation, the RSPHAwards Committee “…were very impressed by themusical excellence of this project in its work withpeople with enduring mental health needs. Given thescale of mental health needs in the UK today, and theneed for new approaches to supporting recovery, thepublic health implications of your work are clear andsubstantial.”

Alan Yates, Chief Executive of Mersey Care NHS Trustcommented: ‘Creative activities are hugely importantto achieving a holistic understanding of mental healthand well-being. The excellent partnership we havewith Liverpool Philharmonic has stimulated all kindsof different musical experiences for patients andoffered new possibilities for inclusion in the culturallife of the city.

‘The Musician in Residence programme is great valuefor money and it works. It aids recovery. The judgingpanel were rightly impressed by the musical excellenceof this project. It would not be possible without RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic and some very talentedmusicians.’

Liverpool Daily Post’s Arts Editor,Laura Davis, recently interviewed 6of our fantastic supporters abouttheir love of Liverpool Philharmonic, and where their love of music began- at our Schools’ Concerts! Withoutthem they say, they would have beenunlikely to have attended classicalmusic concerts.

All are regular concert-goers and donors toLiverpool Philharmonic, including sponsoringsome our musicians through our Adopt a Playerscheme, here’s some of what Brian and ColleenHiggins, Barry and Alice Mintz, Carmel Stewartand Mary Riddoch had to say.

Mary’s first classical music concert was September28, 1945, as the war came to an end, it was aVictory Celebration concert. From the early 80s,Mary has attended every single one of theOrchestra’s home dates. ‘I started saving up myChristmas and birthday money to buy tickets forSunday afternoon concerts as my parentswouldn’t let me go out that late for eveningconcerts.’Mary is a Liverpool Philharmonic Patronand sponsors three of the Orchestra’s musicians:violinists Lesley Gwyther and Concettina DelVecchio and oboe player Ruth Davis.

‘We can’t live without the Phil, it’s a simple asthat.’ says Barry, who began attending concertsin his teens. Alice began attending concertswith Barry in the late 70s.

‘I see a great many younger people at theconcerts now - particularly students - who areobviously thoroughly enjoying their concerts.’Barry and his son David sponsor theOrchestra’s percussionist Josephine Frieze, aChristmas gift for them both from Alice.

Deputy headteacher Carmel first heard theOrchestra at the age of 11. ‘I felt like I’d comehome, I’d found my niche. If you have a verystressful job, which mine can be, you come here(to Liverpool Philharmonic) and by the time yougo out, you’re walking on cloud nine.’ Carmel sponsors Orchestra violinist StephanMayer

‘Liverpool Philharmonic is very important notonly musically, but also to Liverpool. It’s agreat ambassasor for the City and one wecan’t afford to lose’ says Brian, who with hiswife Colleen, sponsor the Orchestra’s PrincipalCello, Jonathan Aasgaard.

On 12 October, a performance by theSacconi String Quartet featuring theworld premiere performance of JohnMcCabe’s Quintet for Horn and StringQuartet at St. George’s Hall ConcertRoom marked the centenary of the firstconcert promoted by the RodewaldConcert Society on 16 October 1911.

The RCS was founded to perform chamber music, madrigals and lectures with the support of SirCharles Villiers Stanford and H Plunket Greene (afamous baritone of the day) on the understandingthat the name of Alfred E Rodewald was associatedwith it. Rodewald was a cotton merchant byprofession but also a distinguished musician,

having established the Liverpool Orchestral Society(LOS) which he conducted until his sudden death in1903. One of his closest friends was Sir Edward Elgardedicated his Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 toRodewald and the LOS and conducted its firstperformance. On the death of Stanford, Elgar wasinvited to become President, but he declined in aninfamous letter now on display in the Rubato Café Barat Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

The Rodewald Concert Society built a reputation forthe high standard of the ensembles it engaged and forits enterprising programmes. Contemporary music ofthe day was frequently performed - both Elgar’s StringQuartet and Piano Quintet were performed inLiverpool within weeks of their premieres. Morerecent commissions have included, in 2007 a ClarinetQuintet by Hugh Wood performed by the RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal ClarinetNicholas Cox and the Chilingirian Quartet.

Today, the concert series is managed and promoted byLiverpool Philharmonic in the beautifully renovated StGeorges Hall Concert Room. The RCS has generouslysupported the commissioning of new works which arefeatured during the 2011/12 season, including JohnMcCabe’s work and in May next year, the worldpremiere of fellow Liverpudlian Emily Howard’sClarinet Quintet once again featuring the RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s PrincipalClarinet, Nicholas Cox.

Introducing …Zoë Armfield In Harmony Liverpool Manager

I’m responsible for all non-musical aspectsof In Harmony Liverpool in West Everton.

Since I started in April 2009, highlights for me havebeen seeing the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra at theRoyal Festival Hall with all the In Harmony Liverpoolchildren at the beginning of the project, and leadingthe children onto the pitch at Goodison Park when weplayed at half time in February 2010. My favourite partof my job is spending time with the young musicians, and seeing their development year on year. Here’swhat I’m looking forward to coming up in the season.

When I was a child and studying piano, my favouritefilm was Shine in which David Helfgot (played byOscar-winner Geoffrey Rush) struggles to cope withthe complexities of playing Rachmaninov’s ThirdPiano Concerto. For The Fountains of Rome concert(17 May) , Wirral-born keyboard maestro StephenHoughwill be playing the concerto, which alsoincludes Glazunov’s Symphony No.9 and Respighi’sThe Fountains of Rome. The conductor is the teenagemusical phenomenon, Illyich Rivas, who hasemerged from Venezuela’s inspirational El Sistemaon which In Harmony is modelled.

It will be great to welcome back the National YouthOrchestra of Great Britain to Liverpool(5 Jan). The In Harmony children worked with themand Tate Liverpool earlier in the year on the AardmanFilms animation, The Itch of the Golden Nitwhichreceived its premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square.

I’d really recommend the In Harmony Third YearCelebration Concert (26 March) and LiverpoolPhilharmonic Youth Orchestra’s concert (25March), in which the Youth Orchestra will be joinedby Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir in aprogramme that includes Vivaldi’s Gloria.

And finally, although it’s quite a way ahead, I’m reallylooking forward to hearing Vasily conduct Beethoven’sSymphony No.9 (9 June) as the In Harmony childrenhave been playing Ode to Joy. We’re hoping to bringsome of them to hear the concert too.
