Liverpool Philharmonic enjoyed abumper Festive Season with44,539 tickets sold for the seasonalprogramme compared to 42,575sold last year and 38,442 in 2008.

A long-established Liverpool tradition, the annualSpirit of Christmas carol concerts are a wonderfulopportunity to hear the combinedmusical forces of theRoyal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choirand Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir. We weredelighted to welcome soprano Lesley Garrett this yearas presenter, who brought her renowned Yorkshirewarmth to proceedings, and treated audiences to herown performances of seasonal music and readings too. These concerts, along withRudolph onHope Street,Peter and theWolf, Polar, Handel’sMessiah, as well asmany others suitable for all the family, completed ourtraditional Christmas and New Year festiveprogramme.

‘Deck the halls with boughs of holly – andwith twobow and light-laden trees, then illuminate the wholein seasonal rosy hues. Serve with a large portion oftraditional carols (and awintry ‘wonderland’outside) and you have an evening Scrooge would bepushed to resist.’Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo reviewsSpirit of Christmas.

Liverpool’s flag was flown at two of China’smost prestigious festivals in two of its mostimportant cities. Our motto of “playing forLiverpool on the world stage” was well andtruly illustrated as the Orchestra played 6concerts in 8 days; 3 in the Shanghai ConcertHall and a gala concert at theWorld EXPO,supporting the City of Liverpool’s presencethere; and 2 concerts in the Forbidden CityConcert Hall in Beijing. Concert programmesfeatured themusic of Elgar and Shostakovichwith Vasily Petrenko, the John Lennon

Songbook under the baton of JohnWilson, and a schools’ concert, conducted by Vasily, and presented by Alasdair Malloy. The tourwas a both a critical and box office successand we are hugely grateful to Liverpool CityCouncil, Liverpool Vision and the Universityof Liverpool whose support was crucial in thetour’s success.

Silver SongIan Tracey celebrated 25 yearsas Chorusmaster of the RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic Choir atthe traditional, annualperformance of Handel’sMessiah, which he conducted on6th January.

He is now anHonoraryMember of theRoyal Liverpool Philharmonic Society.Ian, who has also just celebrated his 30thanniversary as organist at Liverpool Cathedral, has an association with the Royal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra and Choir that goesback to the age of five when, already learningpiano, he was taken to his first concert, (a CarolConcert), by his parents. During 25 years asChorusmaster, Ian has enjoyed close workingrelationships with conductors Sir CharlesGroves, Vernon ‘Tod’ Handley – who hedescribes as his mentor, Libor Pešek andlatterly, Vasily Petrenko. Under Ian’s guidance, the Choir has performed to acclaim in Liverpooland all over the world, including a fruitfulworking relationship in the 1990s with Sir PaulMcCartney when they sang his Oratorio.Ian says he still loves his role as Chorusmaster.‘I find it very energising. It’s all so varied, it’s allso different. At the moment I’mworking onJamesMacMillan’s St John Passion (20 April)and it’s very stimulating to rub shoulders withthese people and hear their thoughts onmusic.’

Theysang their usual pivotal role in the Spirit ofChristmas concerts andMessiah; earlier inthe year they performed inMahler’ssymphonies Nos. 2 and 3 and started the2010/11 season singing at our annual OpenDay in September. Since then, they’ve aperformed Carmina Burana and given aconcert at New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion.Coming up later this year are performances ofBrahms’German Requiem (10March),MacMillan’s St. John Passion (20 April) andElgar’s 3 Scenes from the BavarianHighlands (10 June).
