President & CEOJaene Miranda

Dear Friends,

2014 has brought a year of new initiatives and “firsts” to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County.

2014 was the first year we raised $1,000,000 at our Winter Ball, under the lead-ership of Eddy Taylor, Tom Quick, and Darlene Jordan as chairmen, and Mary Freitas as hon-orary chair. The Winter Ball has now evolved to the Spring Fling, on March 15, 2015, with Board member Danielle Hickox Moore as new chair for 2015, supported by Gala veterans Eddy, Tom, and Mary.

One of the seasons ‘firsts’ this summer was participating in the inaugural Great Give Palm Beach County, and winning as the top fund-raiser! With your help, we raised over $51,000 in a single day and blazed a path as the primary nonprofit on the leaderboard! Next year’s Great Give, in partnership with the Community Foundation and United Way of PBC, is scheduled for May 5-6, 2015, so mark your calendars as we strive to raise the most funds for our children in need yet again.

We also support a new initiative that the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) launched this year, the Great Futures Campaign, as seen on page one. This marketing campaign brings awareness to that critical hour around 3p.m. each day when children are released from school and often have nowhere to go. The local Boys & Girls Clubs are more critical than ever to provide these children with a safe, fun, and educational environment after school and during the summer.

Jaene Miranda just celebrated her first year at the helm of the organization as new President & CEO. From establishing new events like the Great Futures Boys & Girls Club Polo Day, and pro-grams like the STEM and Robotics initiatives, and after-school food program in the Clubs, Jaene brings fresh and innovative ideas to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County.

2014 summer camp was also a success, serving a record number of 2,000 Club children with a fun-filled yet educational experience fighting summer learning loss.

As always, please consider helping us grow our organization by volunteering, partnering, or making a financial investment. For more information on how to help, contact the Administra-tive Office at (561) 683-3287.

Respectfully,

Wallace Turner

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County has launched its Corporate Trustee Club, a program exclusively for executive level business leaders to join together each month to network and help sup-port the BGCPBC.

The mission of the Trustee Club is to support the Club’s priority outcomes for all youth served, including academic success, good character & citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.

If you are interested in becoming a Corporate Trustee for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County or to learn more about the benefits, please contact Noel Martinez at (561) 683-3287 or visit bgcpbc.org/corporate-trustee-program. The first fifty founding members of the Trustee Program will receive special recognition in the lobby of all Clubs.

Corporate Trustee Club Launch

The Boys & Girls Clubs of PaIm Beach County is proud to announce the launch of its newly designed website at www.bgcpbc.org.

This technology upgrade would not be possible without the gen-erous donation from the Mary Alice Fortin Foundation. Based in Palm Beach, the private Foundation has supported many children’s causes, education, and other projects in Palm Beach, including the restoration and renovation of Sea Gull Cottage, the oldest house in Palm Beach. Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County Corporate Board Member Danielle Hickox Moore is the granddaughter of the late Mary Alice Fortin, for whom the foundation is named.

In addition to new visuals and updated pages, the website has increased functionality including online event registrations, sponsorship purchases, and RSVPs. Charitable giving is easily accessible, and donors now have the option to set up recurring donations to the organization.

We invite you to explore the new website on your personal com-puter, tablet or smartphone, connect with us on our social media

platforms, and share the good news! Thank you again to the Mary Alice Fortin Foundation and Forte Interactive for making this new website possible.

Website Gets A Makeover

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County raised over $51,000 on May 6, 2014 during the GREAT GIVE PBC, the most money raised by any participating nonprofit in both Palm Beach and Martin County.

The GREAT GIVE PBC is a 24-hour online giving event designed to raise as much money as possible for hundreds of local nonprofits in a single day, hosted by The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties and United Way of Palm Beach County.

In addition to its $51,120 monies raised, the BGCPBC won the “Dinner Hour Prize” of $1,000 and more than $16,000 in the GREAT GIVE PBC Bonus Pools, totally over $68,000.

The Boys & Girls Clubs fundraising goal for the GREAT GIVE PBC was to raise $40,000 or more to help feed its Club children snacks and

dinner each night of the week. One out of five children in Palm Beach County live in poverty and many go home with little or no food until they return to school the next day. Currently, BGCPBC offers mealtime programs in six of its thirteen Clubs and served 79,000 meals in 2014. Food costs alone for just a single Club total $100,000 annually, not including staff time or labor.

70% of Palm Beach County Boys & Girls Club kids receive free-lunches at school, and 70% of Club kids come from families with annual incomes below $20,000. The dinner that a child receives at the Boys & Girls Clubs might be the only meal they are guaranteed until they go to school the next day.

Mark your calendar for next year’s Great Give for both Palm Beach and Martin Counties on May 5-6, 2015 from 5p.m. til 5p.m.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County Earn Coveted 4-Star Rating from Charity

Navigator

Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s (BGCPBC) sound fiscal management prac-tices and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. This is the third consecutive time that BGCPBC has earned this top distinction.

Since 2002, using data-driven analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added a second dimension of Accountability and Transparency (A&T) to its rating methodology, and now reviews 17 governance and ethical practices as well as mea-sures of openness, providing information on its web site for each of the charities it evaluates. The A&T metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities have “best practices” that minimize the chance of unethical activities and whether they freely share basic information about their organization with their donors and other stakeholders.

“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s coveted 4-star rating puts it in a very select group of high-performing charities,” according to Ken Berger, President and CEO, Charity Navigator. “Out of the thousands of nonprofits Charity Naviga-tor evaluates, only one out of four earns 4 stars -- a rating that, now, with our new Accountability and Transparency metrics, demands even greater rigor, responsibility and commitment to openness.”

“In the current economic environment, it’s important our donors trust that we’re using our funding wisely to accomplish our mission of inspiring and assisting all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive,

responsible and caring citizens,” said Jaene Miranda, President & CEO.

“Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters that we take our fiduciary and governance respon-sibilities very seriously,” said Wallace Turner, chairman of the Board. “Donors can feel confident that their hard-earned dollars are being used efficiently and responsibly with such a high rating.”

BGCPBC’s rating and other information about charitable giving are available free of charge on www.charitynavigator.org.

The Mary Alice Fortin Foundation has generously given five families a very happy Christmas in July. The Foundation donated $5,000 (for a grand total of $25,000) to five families in need from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County.

Families from the Marjorie S. Fisher Boys & Girls Club in West Palm Beach, the Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club in Wel-lington, the Naoma Donnelley Haggin Boys & Girls Club in Delray Beach, the Max M. Fisher Boys & Girls Club in Riviera Beach, and Florence De George Boys & Girls Club in West Palm Beach, all received a check that will be put to great use. Each family nomi-nated has one or more children in the local Clubs. Monies donated can go to necessary school supplies, college tuition, housing and transportation needs, and clothing.

One mother said this, “I am deeply touched and moved by this generosity from the Mary Alice Fortin Foundation. This money could not have come at a better time. With our car requiring repairs and the beginning of school at my heels, I plan to purchase all my daughter’s supplies and uniforms, as well as fix our vehicle. As I aspire to be on the giving end someday, I receive this generous token with a grateful and hopeful, faithful spirit. Thank you.”

Local Businesses Support Back to School Drives

The local business community of Palm Beach County rallied around the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County by holding various school supply drives and donating hundreds of boxes of supplies and new shoes to support Club kids. The iHop Foundation, Waste Manage-ment, the Clerk & Comptrollers’ Office, Breakers Palm Beach, Olive Garden, Dell, and Longhorn Steakhouse are just a few of our valued partners that participated in our school supply drives this year. Thank you so much!

Participating in the distribution celebration are Wellington Councilwoman Anne Gerwig, Waste Management Sr. District Manager Glenn Miller, Boys & Girls Club of Palm Beach County President & CEO Jaene Miranda, Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club Director Kenda Peterson, and WM Government Relations Manager Ellen Smith.

On September 29th, BGCPBC teens helped paint mural panels to be installed on the Bill Bailey Community Center’s south wall at 1101 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Belle Glade.

The mural project is sponsored by Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. The Coun-ty’s Art in Public Places program partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, Inc.’s

After-School Program and the Solid Waste Authority’s recycled paint program to create twenty “Body Graphix” murals. The mural project was facilitated by professional muralist and teaching artist Sharon Koskoff.

Over four weeks, Koskoff worked with Boys & Girls Clubs’ youth to create large-scale com-munity self portraits. Youth gained

experience in the artistic process of public mural painting and learned about color, design, scale, as well as teamwork, group effort and social history. Participants also documented the project through daily journaling with writ-ings and sketches.

What issues /causes are most important to you?

Philanthropy has always been import-ant to our family. We are involved with our church and Siro’s alma mater Brown University. Besides the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, we are also very active with the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) where we have been involved for 28 years and sponsor the Wheelchair games.

Tell us about your family!ROBERTA: We have been married for 32

years. Siro retired at age 56 from UPS after an active career where we moved 13 times and traveled extensively throughout the world. We have four children, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two Siamese cats. Two of our four children have joined us in Palm Beach Gardens where we have happily settled.

How did you become involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County?

SIRO: In the late 90s we had a neighbor in the PGA Club, Bill Marsico, who was on the Board of the Riviera Beach Boys & Girls Club and passion-ate about the organization. He brought me in and when I saw the kids—happy and engaged

in the program despite at that time that it was housed in an old, rundown former fire station, I knew I had to get involved. I became the unit board president in 2001, helped raise funds for and contributed to the new Max M. Fisher Club, and have remained involved in one capacity or another since. In 2010 we named the Siro & Roberta DeGasperis Center for Arts Education at the Club.

Why has BGCPBC been an important philan-thropic partner to you?

The teens served by the Boys & Girls Clubs are not far away from adulthood and need to make decisions about their future and acquire the life skills to survive. If not for the Boys & Girls Clubs, these teens would have no place to go, meals to eat, or hope for the future. The Club teaches skills for life, helps them become well –rounded, and opens doors for the future. We are proud to support and endow the teen programs of the Club. In fact, we get very emotional about it!

Why is it important to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County Foundation?

More can happen when you get involved. We made our pledge at a Boys & Girls Club

meeting and hoped to challenge others to follow our example.

What do you want your legacy to be? How do you want to be remembered?

We believe in an attitude of it is better to give than receive the gifts life has to offer.

Siro and Roberta DeGasperis

BGCPBC Receives Bank of America Charitable Foundation Grant

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County (BGCPBC) has been named a recip-ient of The Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s 2014 workforce development and education grant. The grant is part of a $317,500 collective donation to support workforce development and education in South Florida. The donations will be used towards financial education and job skills training, both of which help commu-nities thrive.

Bank of America’s $10,000 grant will help The Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County specif-ically fund its exciting career development program for underserved, underrepresented teens facing unprecedented challenges in obtaining employment and work experience, Career Paths for Next Generations.

For years, Bank of America has invested in workforce development and education grants

throughout South Florida. This year alone, the grants will impact 36,963 individuals.

““It is crucial to provide young people in Palm Beach County access to education and career training so they can earn a living wage and build better money habits in order to achieve long-term success. Through the workforce development and education grant, Bank of America is making a lasting impact in our community and we are honored to be a recipient,” said Jaene Miranda, President & CEO of the BGCPBC. “Bank of America provides a great example of the potential of corporate social responsibility with this award and a model for investing in nonprofits who are serving the critical needs of those in their local communities.” Three Bank of America / US Trust employees serve on the BGCPBC boards, including Henry Woodard Middleton Jr., Robert Dunkin II, and Zakir Odwani.
