Section A: Editing (10 marks)

It is a given text of continuous prose of not more than 250 words, candidates identify and then edit grammatical errors by writing the corrections in the spaces provided. Errors in punctuation and spelling will not be tested in this section. Section B: Situational Writing (30 marks)

Candidates write a text of 250-350 words based on a given situation which will involve viewing a visual text. Candidates are required to write the text (eg, an email, a letter, a report and a speech) to suit the purpose, audience and context. Section C: Continuous Writing (30 marks)

Candidates choose one out of the four topics to write a text of 350-500 words in continuous prose. The topics set may cover different types of texts (eg, recount, narrative and exposition).

Section A: Visual Text (5 marks)

This section contains Text 1 which will include visuals. Based on the visual text, candidates are required to answer a variety of questions testing comprehension, and on the use of visuals as well as the use of language for impact. Section B: Comprehension (20 marks)

This section contains Text 2, which is narrative in nature. based on which candidates are to answer questions testing comprehension, vocabulary in context and the use of language for impact. Section C: Comprehension and Summary (25 marks)

This section contains Test 3, which is non-narrative in nature, based on which candidates are required to answer questions testing comprehension, vocabulary in context and the use of language for impact. Candidates are also required to write a summary of about 80 words (excluding the introductory words that will be provided).

Listening Comprehension

Section A (24 marks)

Candidates respond to a variety of listening tasks that will assess a range of listening skills. The audio tests, which will consist of a variety of types of tests, eg, narrative, recount, exposition and information tests, may come with visuals where appropriate. A variety of question types, eg, multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blanks, true/false/not stated, and filling in a graphic organiser, may be set. Section B (6 marks)

Candidates listen to an informational text and complete a simple note-taking task.

Oral Communication

Part 1: Reading Aloud (10 marks)

Candidates read aloud a short test bearing in mind the purpose, audience and context. A short instruction will guide candidates on the context in which the given text is to be read aloud. Section A: functional Tasks (30 marks)

Part 1: Form Filling (10 marks) Candidates complete a form based on a given context. In addition to the context, candidates are to make use of the information provided in an informational text, eg, a brochure, an advertisement and a notice, to complete the task. Part 2: Functional Writing (20 marks) Candidates write a functional piece of about 80 words, eg, a letter of application, a note of excuse and an eye-witness account, in response to the context provided in Part 1. Section B: Guided Writing (30 marks)

Candidates write a text of at least 180 words based on a given context which involves viewing a stimulus text. Candidates are required to write the text, eg, a journal entry, a personal letter and an explanation, to suit the purpose, audience and context. Candidates will be guided to complete the task.

Section A: Language Use (40 marks)

Part 1: Editing (10 marks) Candidates indicate whether each of the underlined words is incorrect or redundant in a text of about 150 words. For incorrect words, candidates provide the correct ones in the spaces provided. Spelling and punctuation will not be tested in this part. Part 2: Language in Spoken Context (10 marks) Candidates select their responses from given opinions to fill in the gaps in a transcript of a conversation. Part 3: Modified Cloze I (10 marks) Candidates complete a modified cloze passage testing vocabulary. Candidates select their responses from a list of 15 words to fill in the blanks. Part 4: Modified Cloze II (10 marks) Candidates complete a modified cloze passage testing grammar. Candidates are to use their own words to fill in the blanks. Section B: Reading Comprehension (40 marks)

Part 5: Comprehension I (10 marks) Candidates answer different types of questions, eg, gap fill, true-false and open-ended questions, on an informational text. The text may include visuals, such as charts, maps, tables and graphs. Part 6: Comprehension II (30 marks) Candidates read a text of about 600 words and answer a variety of questions. The text will be accompanied by visuals. Candidates also select from given options the meaning of five words used in the text.

Listening Comprehension

Candidates listen to a variety of spoken texts and complete a range of listening tasks, including matching and ordering. Spoken texts such as conversations, speeches, announcements, reports and informational texts, may be included.

Oral Communication

Part 1: Reading Aloud (15 marks)

Candidates read aloud a text to demonstrate accurate pronunciation, clear articulation and their ability to use voice qualities appropriate to the text’s purpose, audience and context. Part 2: Spoken Interaction (25 marks)

Candidates view a visual stimulus, which is thematically linked to the text in Part 1, in order to engage in a discussion with the examiners.
