Meeting Expectations When it comes to meeting expectations, employees can only do so when they know what’s expected of them.

Managers and supervisors are responsible for setting expectations and communicating them to employees.

One of the easiest ways to communicate expectations is to meet individually with employees. During this meeting, your discussion will be related to what your expectations are and ensuring that the employee has a clear understanding of what’s expected. You also can take this opportunity to recognize the employee for being a contributor to your team and to solicit feedback about your expectations.

Finally, when employees know what’s expected of them they are more likely to be productive and highly engaged.

Quote of the week

The Postal Service is proud of its rich cultural diversity. This month we celebrate Hispanic history, heritage, culture, and recognize the important

contributions made by Hispanic-Americans to the United States.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We would like to recognize our fearless postal survivors. If you are a breast cancer survivor and would like to share your story, please email: [email protected]

“Success is not measured by what a person accomplishes,

but by the opposition they have encountered and the

courage with which they have maintained the struggles

against overwhelming odds.”

Next Week’s Challenge:

The Engagement Challenge

Q. Will you be taking the Postal Pulse survey?

Why or why not?

“No I will not be taking the survey. Accountability. That’s what we want to see. Hold management to the same standards as employees and then we can talk about the ‘Postal Pulse’ and ‘engagement.’”

“I have always participated in postal surveys. But at this point I’m not really feeling the process. Even though Chicago District held a parking lot discussion, no one from my bulk mail entry unit was involved. This is the second engagement survey and my unit never discussed the first one. Bulk mail entry unit seems to operate like it’s not part of the rest of the Postal Service.”

“Yes. Because the only way for us to improve as a business and provide the best service to our customers is by addressing our shortcomings with our employees.”

“I am absolutely going to participate in the survey. Why? Because I can’t expect things to change or for my needs to be met if I don’t express them or tell you what I need.”

*Names have been omitted to protect the anonymity of responses.

Knowing what is expected of us at work should be a routine conversation between an employee and their supervisor. We also encourage this to be a two-way conver-sation. Share with us how you communicate what your expectations are of your supervisor.

Welcome to the Postal Pulse Headquarters where we provide you with the nitty-gritty about all things Postal Pulse.

Take the survey. It’s quick and easy!

with a copy of the survey along

with time to take it on the clock.

At Work

LiteBlue

You can take the survey

online on LiteBlue using a

personal or work

computer.

At Home

You will also receive a copy of the survey to your

home address. It should arrive around Oct. 18.

What are some other rumors about the Postal Pulse? Let us fact-check them.

Email: [email protected]

Rumor: “It has been reported that it is impossible to know who is sending in the survey responses. Yet, it was reported that there are several ways to take the survey. It was also reported that if you take the survey by more than one avenue only one would be accepted. How is it known that someone took to the survey

more than once if you can’t tell who is submitting these surveys. Something doesn’t sound right.”

Yes, we know there are rumors floating around about this new survey. We would like to fact-check them for you!

The Postal Pulse survey — just like the Voice of the Employee survey before it — is not anonymous, it is confidential. That is, the third party vendor who administers the survey — Gallup — knows whether a survey submission is a duplicate of another submission. However, Gallup does not reveal anyone’s individual survey responses to the Postal Service under any circumstances. No one from the Postal Service will ever know who responded or how they answered the survey questions. Results are reported in summary form, and if the office is too small to ensure confidentiality, its results are included in the next higher level report.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What’s on the survey?

The survey has 13 questions and they are not a surprise. They include an overall satisfaction question and the Q12 elements of engagement. When taking the survey, an employee will rate the following on a scale from one to five:

Q00: How satisfied are you with USPS as a place to work?

Q01: I know what is expected of me at work.

Q02: I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right.

Q03: At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.

Q04: In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work.

Q05: My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person.

Q06: There is someone at work who encourages my development.

Q07: At work, my opinions seem to count.

Q08: The mission or purpose of my company makes me feel my job is important.

Q09: My associates or fellow employees are committed to doing quality work.

Q10: I have a best friend at work.

Q11: In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress.

Q12: This last year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and grow.

Q. How confidential is my survey?

A. Extremely. The survey is conducted by Gallup, a third-party vendor. No member of USPS has access to information that can identify employee responses individually. Gallup adheres to specific rules of conduct, which include strict confidentiality rules in survey administration and reporting. Workplaces with less than five survey respondents will not have their survey results available to protect the confidentiality.

Q. Really? Why is the survey asking me if I have a best friend at work?

A. No. This survey is not asking if your childhood best friend works with you. This question assesses whether your work environment is conducive to fostering healthy and valued relationships amongst employees. A best friend at work can be someone you are close with at work, a confidant, someone you can rely on, or simply someone that looks out for you. Gallup’s research shows that the extreme wording of this question and other questions on the survey, help to sort high-performing teams from low-performing teams.

Q. When will I see the survey results for my workplace?

A. The survey closes on Nov. 4. All the results for every single USPS workplace will be released mid-December.

Fearless Postal Survivors “I am a 12-year breast cancer survivor. I have worked for the Postal Service for 30 years and have had seven children. Being able to see the last four graduate and now seeing my grandchildren grow is such a joy and blessing. My parents both worked for the Postal Service and always encouraged me to save my sick leave. I had the royal treatment — mastectomy, chemo, radiation and a hysterectomy. I was off for eight months and used a lot of that sick leave. It is a relief knowing my paycheck was still coming. Every year since the diagnosis, I volunteer for our local Relay for Life

holding a leadership role for the past five years. My employees help each year promoting the Breast Cancer Stamp and explaining that their Postmaster is a survivor.”

— Deidre Pendergraft, Postmaster, Red Bluff, CA

“I am happy to share that I am a breast cancer survivor of 10 years. It has truly been a journey and the acquiring of an education that I had never planned on. I had always been very healthy — never missed a day of school and had two very easy, healthy pregnancies! The journey was rough and with plenty of quirks but I am thankful that it prepared me to be able to reach out to those who have traveled the road behind me. It was due to breast cancer awareness and what to look for and feel for that made a great difference for me. I am amazed at the changes and further knowledge of treatment that has come about in the past 10 years. I am so grateful for the support and encouragement I received from my family, friends and workplace. A journey with breast cancer, or any type of cancer, is one that no one can really understand unless they have been through it. For those of us who have been there, we do not wish the journey for anyone. Support and encouragement mean so much in the battle of cancer and for any health concern… cancer is not an automatic death sentence although very sadly some do lose their life to the disease. Awareness and being pro-active means so very much!”

— Lori Smith, sales associate, Fairfax, MO

“I am a safety specialist with Central Pennsylvania District. I am a 23-year breast cancer survivor. Early detection is why I am still here today. I was only 38 years old when I was diagnosed. I had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Even though that was very difficult at the time, I had a wonderful family and great friends who provided me great support. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Please remind all your friends, co-workers and family members to get their mammograms during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It can save their lives!

“I have been with the Postal Service at the General Mail Facility in Anchorage, AK for 29 years. I was diagnosed with metastatic invasive ductal carcinoma in March 2010. I was only 49 years old. I was in a very dark place for a few months. I had to get the courage up to fight this horrible disease starting with surgery. I was in for a very rough year. A main line port was inserted during surgery that would help put the chemotherapy directly near my heart. I was told it would be okay, but that I may have heart problems later in life. I had to have a scan of my heart to make sure I was strong enough for the chemotherapy and radiation that was to follow surgery. “My first thought was of my three daughters. They need me. I can’t leave them.

They were all under 18 and doing very well in school. I had to fight for my life and do what I had to do. I had very aggressive treatments for a year which included top-of-the-line care. Double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. It brought me to my knees, I was weak, bald and could barely finish treatments. Finally, I finished with treatment in December 2010 with the exception of the bone treatment which I couldn’t handle due to bone pain. I was diagnosed with chronic peripheral neuropathy. I have to continue to this day to treat the aggressive pain that comes with this disease resulting in medication for the rest of my life with nerve pain. I knew my life would change. I was very healthy before this life-changing event. My postal family has been there helping give me the time off I need. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, remember to stay positive, have a good support team and fight, fight, fight.”

— Rita Olson, general clerk, Anchorage, AK

“At the Wright City, OK, Post Office we had a little help selling Breast Cancer Stamps in the first week of October. Our Elf, Noel, put on his pink apron and hat just for the occasion! He has returned back to the North Pole to help Santa. But we look forward to his return on Dec. 1.

The Rio Grande Consumer and Industry Contact and Business Service Network staffs are always up to the challenge in answering customer calls and resolving mailer issues. To thank employees for their hard work and to encourage and engage them in completing an in-office survey asking: “What is expected of me at work? What is my role? And how we can create a caring and trustworthy work environment?” employees were treated to lunch to discuss the importance of their thoughts and comments.

A follow-up meeting incorporated elements of employee engagement principles which included basic needs, individual contribution and teamwork.

Georgia rap artist finds musical inspiration in his daily rural carrier route.

Get to Know Them Wendell Sutton, a rural carrier assistant, is a local artist in Lithonia, GA. With the rapper name, Dell G, he began thinking about his new song, “Mr. Postman,” while delivering mail. With peaceful days delivering in silence, Dell G thought of making a

song on a postal carrier’s perspective of how the world can be changed for the better. His music has inspired others to think positively and understand what a postal carrier goes through daily. He says he hopes to inspire others by showing that you should not give up on your dreams or goals in life. “With the youth, they think it’s cool to be a postal carrier after my music,” said Sutton. “With the adults, many have understood the vision and appreciated the message.”

To hear Dell G’s hit song “Mr. Postman” email: [email protected].
