The picture above shows all the volunteers Soldiers, NCO’s, and Students alike assisting the Crayons to Computers Program. The dedication of the 16th Ordnance Battalion HHD Team was greatly appreciated by the organizations staff. .

The Soldiers of Delta 16th Ordnance assisted teachers, students, and parents in preparation for the new school year that began on 3 September

E/832D OD BN, Company Leaders assisted in the restoration and area beautification of Henricus Historical Park. Henricus Park is a living history museum, which aims to educate children and adults, in conjunction with local schools, on the history of the second successful English settlement in the New World. Echo Company Soldiers helped rebuild displays in order to prepare the park for the upcoming school year.

B Co has an established great relationship with the Beulah Elementary School’s principal and the school’s staff. As they prepare to start a new school year, B Co Soldiers helped stuff welcome packets for students and families. Nearly 600 packets were made!

Active duty service members can provide a steady source of volunteers because at their core they already want to serve. Community organizations in need of volunteers only need to reach out, if the military doesn’t do it first.

Motivation!

Knowing your local military population and what motivates them can be a critical tool to ensure their participation. Ft. Lee is a prime example. It is a training installation – so the Soldiers are desperate to leave post, wear civilian clothes, and eat normal food.

• Establish an on-going relationship with a military organization, not necessarily specific individuals – as military members are mobile and change swiftly

• Remember to understand the motivators!• Tap into the ‘Need to Serve!’• Be flexible – Active Duty service members have

numerous obligations that can arise at a moments notice
