Students and Majors

• National Center for Education Statistics

• About 80% of students in the US change their major at least once

• On average, college students change their major at least three times over the course of their college career

• Over 80% of new freshman – even those who have declared a major – are still uncertain about their major and how they are personally connected to that academic direction.

Majors in Minutes• Majors in Minutes is a fun, group speed-dating

approach to learning about majors of interest by visiting with senior representatives in those majors. This is a come and go event, lasting two hours.

Page 10: #Engaging Deciding Students in Programming Where Advising Matters!

Majors in Minutes

• How seniors are selected

• Email sent to department heads asking them to nominate seniors

• I contact seniors via email asking for their commitment (2 seniors per major is ideal)

• Departments that don’t send nominations, I recruit from student leaders on campus

• Seniors receive a training email
