English Getaway 2010
Introduction
English Camp is synonymous with the English Unit of MJSC Tun
Ghafar Baba (formerly known
as Jasin MJSC). This is because the camp is held almost every
year since 1990s. The unit used tohold the camp together with the
BM unit which organized a BM camp simultaneously. However,
a few years back has seen the separation of the two units for
the benefit of the students. Since
then, the English Unit is on its own running the camp.
The objectives of organizing this camp are:
i) to boost weak students confidence and motivation in learning
English
ii) to arouse students interest in the subject and language
through fun, interactive, language-based activities.
By taking them out of the school compound, they will experience
a more conducive environment
for language learning. The activities organized are in a form of
competition, as we want to instilla sense competitiveness among the
students so that they will perform their very best in
everything they do.
80 students are selected based on their semester 2 English final
exam result, which most of them
obtained grade 5C and below. 8 facilitators are chosen to assist
the English Unit for all theactivities carried out.
English Camp has been our annual activity and we believe that
this programme somehow has
helped the students to improve their results in this subject for
SPM. In SPM 2006, more than97% students obtained 1A and 2A. As for
SPM 2007, 94.6% students obtained 1A and 2A.
This activity is the climax of the English Camp Programme which
we have started since thestudents are in their form four. It is
also to reward the campers who have never or seldom failed
to turn up every time the meeting is conducted.
Our English Camp has undergone a re-branding as this is the
second year we break the usual
pattern of having it at Botanical Garden Ayer Keroh, instead we
have it elsewhere and for this
getaway, everyone inclusive students have to work together to
raise funds to finance this
programme. We hope by getting our campers to raise funds for
this getaway, they will value theexperience and at the same time
the spirit of togetherness and cooperation is instilled in
them.
Based on our first English Getaway 2009, we have reduced our
problems of getting all campersto be at the location on time and
other disciplinary problems. It was very easy to monitor their
attendance as most of the activities were carried out at one big
hall.
For the English Getaway 2010, the dates chosen are 6 and 7
February 2010 and the venue is
Melaka Tropical Farm, Sungai Udang. For this camp, each
participant has to pay RM55 for 2D
1N stay which includes 5 meals, a barbeque and night walk. It is
our aim to get somesponsorships from companies and individuals to
cover the cost.

Cost
88 students x 55 = RM4840.0012 teachers x 100 = RM1200.00
Prizes = RM500.00
Misc. = RM200.00Total = RM6740.00
This is only a rough figure and we do not know any unforeseen
cost we may have to cover.However, we do hope we could get
sponsorships from Muafakat, private companies and
individuals to help finance the cost for this camp and the
balance will be paid by the participants.

We also assign each teacher to help facilitate the campers with
fund raising activities. Among the
activities the campers have done are bake sales, chocolate
dedications and night market (schoolbound).
