New year traditions in England

In England the first visitor in the New Year is important. This is

supposed to give good luck to everyone in the house.

The first visitor must be male, young, dark-haired and good

looking. He must carry a small piece of coal, money, bread, and

salt. These are the signs of wealth.

Other New Year traditions

New Clothes - if you wear new clothes on New Year day you

will get more new clothes during the year.

Newborn Babies - babies born on 1st January are thought to

be the luckiest persons throughout their lives.

Open doors - All the doors of the house should be kept open

at mid night to let the old year escape easily.

Make Noise – some people believe that loud noise scares

devil. They celebrate the New Year with as much noise as

possible.

The Wind's Direction – it depends which way the wind is

blowing at sunrise.

Wind from the east, there will be natural disasters.

Wind from the west, someone famous will die.
