    ENGLISH READING TEST 1

    Here is a mini test designed for ESL learners interested in testing theirreading skills.

    Read the passages below carefully.Then choose the best answer for each of the four questions that follow.

    The following are letters to the editor of a school newspaper.

    Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades.

    Fortunately most educators are becoming aware of the fact that studentsha!e different interests and abilities. Howe!er the regimentation resulting

    from grades still e"ists. #rades often stifle creati!ity. $ompeting for bettergrades causes many students to turn down opportunities to pursue music

    dramatics and sports. #rades impose an arbitrary standard of success on

    e!eryone. % do not demand as some e"tremists do that grades be abolishedimmediately. Howe!er % do belie!e that less emphasis should be placed on

    grades. % hope that someday grades will become optional at &illage HighSchool.

    Let's face the facts about grades. #rades perform three basic functions.

    First grades moti!ate students to work at their highest le!el of competence.Second they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a reprimand

    to students who do not work hard. Finally grades are used as an effecti!e

    standard by which to measure student achie!ement. #ood grades helpstudents to get (obs and to get into uni!ersity. %'!e spoken with a number of

    students who ha!e (obs and most of them say that they were hiredprimarily on the basis of their grades. )y grades helped me land a part*time

    (ob and will help me get into uni!ersity ne"t year. % think grades are

    e"tremely important at &illage High School.
