Light Engineering Industry
The Light Engineering industry contributed to the growth of the manufacturing sector as a support industry to the sugar mills as well as steel and iron products for the construction sector since the 1960s.
This industry has also been fuelling the growth of other sectors in the manufacturing sector by supplying various types of machines, parts and by providing repair services.
The highest contributor to domestic output from Light Engineering industry is basic metal and fabric metal products which are used as components by local manufacturing industries, namely by the sugar, agro processing, textile, and ship building sectors.
During the second phase of Mauritian industrialisation in the 1990s, new products were manufactured for exports to traditional and regional markets.
This industry is made of some 200 large companies and 800 small establishments employing 10,000 persons.
The products of this industry are divided into four broad categories:

This sector has emerged to meet the needs of the local market. The sugar industry has always been supported by some heavy engineering workshops in the casting and manufacture of sugar mills.
In parallel, small parts were also manufactured essentially for the sugar industry and in ship building and repair by several small and medium sized mechanical workshops.
Expertise gained in the sugar industry by these workshops has enabled these specialised workshops to export services and machinery used in the sugar factories in the African continent.
Skilled craftsmen, with years of specialized knowledge
tolerances while maintaining the ability to meet new and on-going requirements through the use of ever-increasing expertise.
The combination of a friendly, professional service and the ability to meet tight delivery times has also attracted export clients.
A large variety of metal products are manufactured locally among which :
> Cutlery, Aluminium kitchen utensils & Kitchenware > Metal forgings & stampings > Man hole covers > Tools making & Punching tools > Machinery & equipment > Cast iron valves > Hydraulic pumps > Refrigeration & air conditioning assembly > Automotive brake lining, Clutch pads and linings & Brake pads > Coachworks > Metal pipes > Stainless steel products >> Toiletry articles > > Radiators and condensers > Stoves and BBQ grill > Gears and parts for machines

domestic market mainly for the construction industry. PVC rapidly replaced iron and mild steel materials in this market.
Plastic shopping bags later invaded the local market as a strong, convenient and cheap bag for carrying items. The plastic material is now replaced by Bio materials. However, various plastic sheets are produced for use in agricultural, textile and construction sectors.
The packaging industry also emerged to supply sub materials for the export enterprises, namely plastic polybags for packaging of garments. PET bottles and other types of packaging are used for bottling of beverages and other agro processed goods.
During the industrialisation phase, new products were produced for the export markets in Europe and US. These include sun glasses, goggles, paint and cosmetic brushes.
Glassware products are used for the construction industry used in openings namely of aluminium and wood.

to develop local technologies in the manufacture of modern, innovative and high-quality materials.
The construction and building materials environment has changed considerably in recent years and, in turn, the expectations of industry leaders have shifted. Indeed, this sector comprises of a myriad of products ranging from aluminium and UPVC to electrical items.
In addition to improving penetration in existing export markets, many companies in the sector have turned to increasing international growth to counteract the impact of the economic downturn in mature markets.
Cross-border joint ventures and strategic alliances are also playing a more prominent role, demanding leaders with global perspective. In this context, the main export markets for this sector are Reunion Island, Madagascar and Seychelles.
