EnvEurope project short intro• Proposes a design for environmental high
quality monitoring and long-term research sites(LTER)
• Define harmonized parameters and methods, proposed and shared by the whole LTER community
• Based on existing infrastructures = lot of valuable long-term ecological date series
• SDI components are proposed to be created (Action1)
• Focuses on 3 types of ecosystems (terrestrial, marine and freshwater)

within 11 countries of Europe
45 terrestrial sites
15 freshwater site
7 marine sites

Metadata in EnvEurope
• 2 metadata models
– Site-level metadata model
– Dataset-level metadata model
• Site level metadata model
– Descriptive info about sites (platform, bioregion, climate, coordinates, data management, contact, research Q, etc.)
– Implemented online centralized catalogue to inventory this info
– LTER InfoBase
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (UK) INSPIRE Conference 2011 27/6 - 1/7/2011
Metadata in EnvEurope
• Dataset-level metadata
– Ecological Metadata Language – EML
– Domain specific metadata profile derived
from EML and based on user requirement
– Draft specification being developed
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (UK) INSPIRE Conference 2011 27/6 - 1/7/2011
Metadata in EnvEurope
• Metadata component of EnvEurope data
exchange system

Metadata in EnvEurope versus INSPIRE
• MD elements proposed to INSPIRE
– 18. Dataset method description
– 19. Dataset instrumentation description
– 20. Dataset sampling description
• MD element proposed to EnvEurope
– Legal obligation (Conformity)
• MD Examples for data specification
• MD crosswalk EML2INSPIRE

Spatial data in EnvEurope
• High level of heterogeneity
• Mainly raw observation data
• No data models
• Different data flows
ESRI Geodatabase
PostGIS, SHP
XLS,TXT,
XML (SOS)
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (UK) INSPIRE Conference 2011 27/6 - 1/7/2011
EnvEurope data versus INSPIRE DS
• CNR – ISE data sources – sample data
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (UK) INSPIRE Conference 2011 27/6 - 1/7/2011
Summary & open issues for future • Work performed so far brought lot of valuable
info about ELTER data management
• Similar activities may quite effectively be on mutual contribution
• EnvEurope MD specification – draft
• Data providers still do not recognize importance of data documentation
• Practical MD use cases are important to let them understand importance to document their data – to make data immortal
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (UK) INSPIRE Conference 2011 27/6 - 1/7/2011
Summary & open issues for future • Important metadata has been proposed to
INSPIRE TWG BR-HB-SD and vice versa
• Initial effort on data mapping to relevant
INSPIRE themes has been initiated
• Efforts to map species data to INSPIRE SD data
model has been done
• Aim is to find the way how to define a bridge
between observation and aggregated data for
distribution
• Links to other INSPIRE themes (PS, HB, EF)
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (UK) INSPIRE Conference 2011 27/6 - 1/7/2011
Outlook• Outcomes – project completes 2013
• Data exchange system implementation– Metadata component
• EML2IS0 crosswalk extension
• Get ‘dirty’ with metadata and users feedback
• EnvEurope data mapping to INSPIRE related schemas– Participation on INSPIRE Annex II+III DS testing
• Activities on the finalization of DS ver. 03 within TWG BR-HB-SD
• Linkages to another parallel ongoing activities (SEIS, GMES)
