wind and solarpower generation

In South Africa, WSP has worked with IPPs and lending institutions developing projects in terms of the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). We took a pioneering role in this programme when it led the ESIA to Equator Principles for the 500MW Kalahari Solar Power Project, the first concentrated solar power (CSP) project to be brought to feasibility stage in Southern Africa.

In Western Africa, WSP has upgraded to IFC standards, the ESIA & RAP studies prepared for the proposed Zina 22MW solar power plant in Burkina Faso, currently the largest planned solar power plant in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, we have been involved in solar power projects in Zambia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Gambia and Kenya.

We provide specialist ESIA assessments of all key issues associated with wind and solar projects, including: – Surface and groundwater abstraction feasibility studies – Visual modelling and impact assessment – Soil, land use and land capability assessments – Avifauna and bat studies (wind) – Wind turbine noise modelling

Biotherm Energy, South Africa (2016)EIA Process for 280MW (2 phases) wind power generation facility, 140MW (1 phase) wind power generation facility, 300MW (2 phases) CSP power genera- tion facility, 375MW (5 phases) photovoltaic (PV) power generation facility and associated transmission lines.

thermalpower generation

WSP has experience in the development of large scale gas, coal and oil, and biomass fired power plants in Africa. In South Africa our team has worked with major petrochemical producer SASOL undertaking the ESIA to IFC Performance Standards for the development of two combined cycle gas engine power plants. The largest of these is the 140-175MW Central Térmica de Ressano Garcia (CTRG) power project in Mozambique fuelled with natural gas from the existing Matola gas pipeline. We are actively involved in Ghana where we have recently completed the ESIA and Environmental and Social Impact Statement (“ESIS”) for a 260MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) designed to run on liquid crude oil, diesel fuel and natural gas. This is the first IPP power project in the country to gain financial close on behalf of Amandi Energy.

WSP provides specialist ESIA assessments of all key issues associated with large scale thermal power projects including:

– Complex air dispersion modelling using ADMS, AERMOD and CALPUF platforms and impact assessment

– Noise attenuation modelling and impact assessment – Ash/waste and effluent characterization and disposal assessments – Infrastructure design and marine modelling for cooling intakes and thermal

discharges
