The Conflict
• Economic Development Vs. Environmental Conservation and Management.
• There is a need for strategic thinking and planning.
• This needs to be sustainable.
Role Of Greenpeace
• An international environmental organisation founded in Vancouver, Canada in 1971.
• Tackles issues such as waste disposal, deforestation, nuclear power, harvesting of seal cubs and industrial pollution.
• Greenpeace’s goal is “to ensure the continuing ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity”
• Greenpeace exists in over 40 countries.
Greenpeace’s Main Interests
• Stopping climate change.• Preserving oceans.• Saving ancient forests.• Campaigning for peace and nuclear
disarmament.• Promoting sustainable farming.• Eliminating toxic chemicals.
The WWF
• Includes all aspects of nature conservation (as in the past the WWF was mainly concerned with endangered species).
• Has over 5 million supporters globally.• Increasingly concerned with environmental
destruction.• The WWF is interested in climate change, global
warming, freshwater ecosystems, marine ecosystems, species and diversity, sustainability, agriculture, toxins, trade and investment.
