HARBIN, 25 Sept—The use of 270 kilogrammes ofgold bullion as a floor inlay has turned a newlyinaugurated hotel in Harbin, capital of northeast China’sHeilongjiang Province, into the centre of a debate.

Paradise Island Hotel, located on Zhongyang Streetin downtown Harbin, started business on Tuesday. Thegold bullion, bearing the inscription “Swiss BankCorporation” and “Paradise Island”, glitters in twoheart-shaped formations beneath transparent glass inthe hotel lobby.

“The gold floor is a great innovation. A lot ofcustomers have been coming in to take a look and someof them stayed to have dinner,” said Yin Yingchuan, sales director with Paradise Island Hotel Co, Ltd.

This does notnecessarily mean therewill be more frequent ElNinos -- which can disruptnormal weather around theworld -- but could wellmean that these wildpatterns will be strongerwhen they occur, saidJames Hansen of NASA'sGoddard Institute forSpace Studies in NewYork City. The El Ninophenomenon is animportant factor inmonitoring global warm-ing, according to a paperby Hansen and colleaguespublished in the currentProceedings of theNational Academy ofSciences.

Earth may be at warmest point in 1mln yearsWASHINGTON, 26 Sept — Earth may be close to the warmest it has been in the last million years,

especially in the part of the Pacific Ocean where potentially violent El Nino weather patterns are born, climate scientists reported on Monday.

El Ninos can pushtemperatures higher thanthey might ordinarily be.This happened in 1998when a so-called "superEl Nino" helped heat theEarth to a record high.

What is significant, the scientists wrote, is that2005 was in the sametemperature range as1998, and probably wasthe warmest year ever, with no sign of the warmsurface water in the easternequatorial Pacific typicalof an El Nino.

The waters of thewestern equatorial Pacificare warmer than in theeastern equatorial Pacific, and the difference in

temperature betweenthese two areas couldproduce greater tem-perature swings betweenthe normal weather patternand El Nino, they wrote.

They blamed thisphenomenon on globalwarming that is affectingthe surface of the westernPacific before it affects thedeeper water.

Overall, Earth iswithin 1.8 degreesFahrenheit (1 degreeCentigrade) of its highesttemperature levels in thepast million years,Hansen and the otherswrote. They noted arecent steep rise inaverage temperatures,

with global surfacetemperatures increasingabout 0.4 degreesFahrenheit (0.2 degreesCentigrade) for each ofthe last three decades.

Scientists attributethis rise to humanactivities, notably therelease into theatmosphere of green-house gases -- notablycarbon dioxide -- whichlet in sunlight and trap itsheat like the glass wallsof a greenhouse.

The relationship wasonly apparent when itcame to men. They didnot find a relationship inthe case of women.

“Males drink moreoften, more heavily andconsume more beer andspirits than females,”Asbridge said in astatement.

“Moreover, thenature of the link betweenalcohol consumption andviolence is more readilya male experience, forexample, drinkingheavily in bar settingsleads to aggression andviolence.”

For the study, Mannand Asbridge used

Statistics Canada data tocalculate per capita totalalcohol consumption aswell as murders of peopleaged 15 and older from1968 to 1991.

Alcoholics Anony-mous gave estimatedmembership data fromsurveys and mailing lists.

“Our study showedthat male homicide ratesin Ontario were stronglyrelated to average levelsof alcohol consumption,”Mann said in a statement.

“These observationsconfirm previous re-search showing thatalcohol is a leadingcontributor to violence,as well as violence-related mortality.”
