Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet Module Features

Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet ModuleFeatures

Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet switching modules share the followingmajor features:

• Wire-speed, port-to-port packet transfer on the Ethernet and Fast Ethernet interfaces.

• Media-rate performance across the backplane (1.2 Gbps for the Catalyst 5002 switchand Catalyst 5000 switch; 3.6 Gbps for the Catalyst 5505 switch, Catalyst 5509 switch, and Catalyst 5500 switch).

• Half- or full-duplex operation on dedicated switch ports (full-duplex operation only onthe Gigabit Ethernet modules).

• 10/100BaseTX Fast Ethernet switching modules support IEEE 802.3u auto-negotiationprocess that allows the switch to negotiate the speed (10 or 100 Mbps) or duplex mode(half- or full-duplex) with an attached device.

• Dedicated ASIC on each port with embedded Remote Monitoring (RMON) andstandard Ethernet Management Information Base (MIB).

• Connectivity from switched Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet to FiberDistributed Data Interface (FDDI) and ATM backbones.

• Supports any combination of switching modules; modules can be hot-swapped or addedwithout resetting the Catalyst 5000 family switch.

• Capability for any Fast Ethernet interface to support up to 1000 VLANs betweenCatalyst 5000 family switches and Cisco routers.

• Supports multiple active MAC addresses on a switching port and dynamically allocatesto any port.

Fast Ethernet Switching Module (WS-X5237-FX-MT)The Fast Ethernet switching module (100BaseFX 24 port), shown in Figure 4-12, provides24 switched, 100-Mbps (100BaseFX), full- or half-duplex Fast Ethernet ports. The portshave the MT-RJ connectors for the SMF cable.

The WS-X5237-FX-MT module supports Fast EtherChannel. On all FastEtherChannel-capable hardware, port groups determine which ports can form a channel.Channels must be composed of contiguous ports from the same port group. A channelcannot have some ports from one group and some ports from another. However, you canconfigure multiple channels within a single group. On the WS-X5237-FX-MT, the portsform six groups of four ports each (ports 1–4, 5–8, 9–12, 13–16, 17–20, and 21–24). You can configure the three Gigabit Ethernet ports with either 1000BaseSX,1000BaseLX/LH, or 1000BaseZX laser modules, known as Gigabit Interface Converters(GBICs). GBICs are hot-swappable input/output devices that plug into a Gigabit Ethernetswitching module, linking the module with the fiber-optic network. GBICs use SC-typeconnectors. The GBICs fit through cutouts in the front of the module and plug intoconnectors on the module. You can install any combination of GBICs in the GigabitEthernet switching module.

Note When using LX/LH GBICs with a 62.5-micron diameter MMF, you must install amode-conditioning patch cord (CAB-GELX-625 or equivalent) between the GBIC and theMMF cable on both the transmit and receive ends of the link. The mode-conditioning patchcord is required to comply with IEEE standards. The IEEE found that link distances couldnot be met with certain types of fiber-optic cable cores. The solution is to launch light fromthe laser at a precise offset from the center by using the mode-conditioning patch cord. Atthe output of the patch cord, the LX/LH GBIC is compliant with the IEEE 802.3z standardfor 1000BaseLX.

Figure 4-21 shows a GBIC, and Table 4-20 lists the currently available styles.

Gigabit EtherChannel Switching Module (WS-X5410)

This module requires supervisor engine module software release 4.1(1) or later.

This module has one STATUS LED, which provides information about the module, and oneLINK LED for each of the three port connections. The LEDs are described in Table 4-22.

Gigabit EtherChannel Switching Module (WS-X5410)The two-slot, nine-port Gigabit EtherChannel switching module shown in Figure 4-22,provides nine switched 1000-Mbps, full-duplex ports.

Note The WS-X5410 module supports EtherChannel. On the GigabitEtherChannel-capable hardware, port groups determine which ports can form a channel.Channels must be composed of contiguous ports from the same port group. A channelcannot have some ports from one group and some ports from another. However, you canconfigure multiple channels within a single group. On the WS-X5410, the ports form twogroups of four ports each (ports 1–4 and 5–8). Port 9 cannot be channeled. For additionalinformation on the Fast EtherChannel feature, refer to theSoftware Configuration Guidefor your switch.

You can configure the nine Gigabit Ethernet ports with either 1000BaseSX,1000BaseLX/LH, or 1000BaseZX laser modules, known as GBICs. GBICs arehot-swappable input/output devices that plug into a Gigabit EtherChannel module, linkingthe module with the fiber-optic network. GBICs use SC-type connectors. A GBIC is shownin Figure 4-21; currently available GBIC styles are listed in Table 4-20. The GBICs fitthrough cutouts in the front of the module and plug into connectors on the module. You caninstall any combination of GBICs in the Gigabit EtherChannel module.

Note A maximum of six 1000BaseZX GBICs can be installed in a switch chassis.

This module requires supervisor engine module software release 4.2(1) or later.

1 The Gigabit EtherChannel switching module (WS-X5410) occupies two chassis slots.2 The Gigabit EtherChannel module has not been fully tested on the Catalyst 5000 switch. Use of the Gigabit

EtherChannel module with this switch is not recommended until testing has been completed. Completionof testing will be indicated in theRelease Notes for Catalyst 5000 Family Gigabit EtherChannel SwitchingModule Software Release 4.2(x) document.

3 In order to utilize all three 1.2-Gb backplane buses, you must have a Supervisor Engine III, III FSX,III FLX, or III G module installed in slot 1.
