Ethical issues on medical tourism: Asiser perspective

A way to assure the ethics of the medical tourism is through creating atransparent and equal healthcare system, where the foreignpatients are both protected and responsible, where the medical tourismfacilitator represents the hospital providers but does not prescribe thetreatments as in a “health mall”, where the hospitals follow standards andregulations and strive for excellence not only during the treatment, but alsobecome involved in the post surgical process, and where the governmentguarantees the health assistance for its citizens and it is responsible forinvesting in its proper health care system.

Received a call from a patient, John , working on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea, near Barcelona.

The patient had severely hurt his little finger.

Our medical emergency department made an assessment guidance by telephone and evaluated that a minor surgery might be necessary.

Asiser organized the medical appointment with a specialist for this foreign patient in "Sagrat Cor", one of our hospitals in Barcelona.

The patient went through a successful surgery, that required a necessary follow up exam in a week.

However, the patient could go back to his ship after spending 24 hours in our hospital.

Review within a week ... yes but the ship moved from Barcelona and John was in already in Mallorca.

Asiser coordinated the follow up appointment at one the clinics in Mallorca, so that John could have the post surgical exam on his finger surgery and the care process was completed positively.
