Professor Luigi Clauser M.D., D.M.D.Director and Chief, Department of Cranio Maxillo-Facial SurgerySt. Anna HospitalUniversity of FerraraFerrara, Italy

Dear Friend Luigi,First of all I want to thank you for your kind Fax letter, that reached me a few days ago.I am privileged by your kind offer to have the conference running in my honour. Of course I was the one who introduced almost all the procedures for correcting anomalies or abnormal positions of the maxilla and the mandible by rather safe standard procedures and also who introduced a transoral technique for the correction of chin anomalies.I was also the fi rst to produce and suggest a simultaneous Le Fort III plus Le Fort I in cases of severe hypoplasia and retromaxillism. Nowadays these techniques are executed every day in almost every country around the world to the benefi t of the patients and also of a large numbers of surgeons. For that reason I consider your planned conference as a landmark in orthognathic surgery. It will be, of course, a great honour for me to be present and perhaps also deliver a lecture on the most fascinating and complicated subject in orthognathic surgery. On a similar symposium organized by Joachim in fall last year he asked me to talk about “Pioneer Steps in Correcting Secondary Cleft Lip and Palate Deformities”: In my opinion it was probably my best lecture I ever delivered. There is still plenty of time to organize your conference. So we will be in touch again.

With my thanks and compliments I remain in old friendship yours sincerely,

ADDRESS FROM PROF. HUGO L. OBWEGESER

In 1953 Prof. Hugo L. Obwegeser performed the First Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy of the Mandible. Sixty years later... NH14

NH14 is dedicated to Prof. Hugo L. ObwegeserDear Colleagues and Friends,

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to participate in an International Symposium, New Horizons in Orthognathic Surgery 2014 - NH14 - in Ferrara, Italy, between February 28th and March 1st 2014.In Orthognathic Surgery we face major changes in our every-day practice, and these challenges will increase in the near future, because the extraordinary advances in technology applied to our profession are not only amazing but are becoming the standard of care as they result in improved outcomes for our patients. Success is directly related to the ability and consistency of the surgical-orthodontic team to achieve predictable, stable results. The hypothesis is that a successful result is directly related to the way we take our records and perform diagnosis and treatment planning, in accordance with basic general principles.

Today we have the opportunity to plan and treat 3-dimensional problems with 3-dimensional technology. We should enter into this new era with appropriate standards to ensure better results, instead of simply using these new tools, which will clearly demonstrate not only to us, but to everyone, what we do when we perform orthognathic surgery.

NH14 will also be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the fi rst sagittal split mandibular osteotomy which, when it was performed, on April 22 1953, by Prof. Hugo L. Obwegeser, opened up new horizons in orthognathic surgery. He developed an operation that has allowed the repositioning of a protruded mandible into a more backward position. A fi eld, previously limited to surgery of the lower jaw to correct prognathism, had been expanded to unlimited possibilities.Internationally famous speakers including the pioneer of this surgery and Guest of Honour, Professor Hugo L. Obwegeser, will be presenting lectures in the symposium on specifi c topics.

NH14 represents an excellent updating opportunity to see the latest scientifi c developments, future trends and products through lectures and a trade exhibition. It would be a great pleasure to welcome you to Ferrara and to be your host, both scientifi cally and socially. We trust that you will fi nd the scientifi c programme to be educational, the social program enjoyable, and the whole event rewarding.

We look forward to seeing you in Ferrara for an unforgettable Symposium and experience that will be remembered for years to come.

With all the best,

A TRIP TO ITALY is always a discovery. More than half of the world’s historic and artistic heritage is located in this country. The works of art that Italy boasts date back to different epochs and yet are geographically very close. On the same day and in the same city one can easily visit a Roman archaeological site, a baroque church and a modern art museum. Evidence of the past and its rich history can be found everywhere. From fi ne wines and exceptional cuisine to the magnifi cent art treasures and historical sites, to music, dance and more, culture passed down from century to century.

THE HISTORY OF FERRARA dates back around 1300 years when Ferrara was a Byzantine military castrum (fortifi ed city). In 1391 after the founding of the University, which is one of the oldest Italian and European Universities, Ferrara became an important intellectual and artistic centre and one of the most opulent courts of the Renaissance. This ancient city lying on the Po river valley, shows the tourists the magical atmosphere of its past with its red brick walls and the tree-lined avenues.

From 1995 UNESCO has included the historical centre of Ferrara in the list of World Cultural Heritage as a splendid example of a town planned in the Renaissance and still keeping its historical centre intact.

WELCOME TO FERRARA ... AND TO ITALY
