Problem solving is about having a goal and working out how to accomplish it. Think of reading the instructions for an IKEA flat pack or planning to write a report for work. Problem solving enables people to manage, interpret, shape and alter their environment to improve their quality of life at home, school, in workplaces and the broader community. The importance of being able to solve problems is reflected within the syllabus documents and resources used by teachers. Some examples: • interpretandcriticallyanalysetextsby

respondingtoinferredmeaningwithinatext(Literacy Continuum).

• retellstories(HSIE Syllabus)• supportaconclusionbyexplainingor

demonstratinghowananswerwasobtained(Mathematics Syllabus)

• engageintheskillsandprocessesof scientific inquiry and technological design (Science and Technology syllabus)

Framing knowledge as a problem to be solved is a very effective way to develop student skills and understanding. This is because,

when carefully planned and implemented by the teacher, knowledge as problem solving is typically authentic and very engaging. Think of a group of students outside in the playground and applying maths and Science to set up a bush tucker garden; think for example of designing and calculating the area of the garden beds, determining the suitability of plants for the particular soil type and investigating practical uses for the plants. As demonstrated by the bush tucker garden project, knowledge as problem solving is very effective when presented in open ended learning activities where students are actively involved in higher-order thinking, and therefore in developing their own meaning and understanding. This includes students addressing multiple perspectives and/

or solutions and recognising that knowledge has been constructed and therefore is open to question. In open ended learning activities students must have the opportunity to analyse and evaluate knowledge and

regularly engage in sustained conversations about the concepts and ideas they are encountering. These activities typically incorporate a range of resources including technology, guest speakers, expert helpers, construction materials and printed media. Knowledge as problem is embedded into the pedagogy at Ashfield Public School such as the Here in our Garden learning initiative. Last year underlies the professional development of teachers, infuses the professional dialogue between teachers and parents, and drives educational initiatives. It is evident in the learning activities where students are capable of learning and understanding beyond the teacher and curriculum; where students actively construct their own understanding of new knowledge and concepts.Within the larger context of Ashfield Public School, within the organisation of curriculum, daily procedures, cultural traditions, celebrations and relationships with one another, there lies knowledge as problem solving at the very heart.Damien Moran Principal Ashfield Public School

In Kindergarten we have had a very busy and interesting time. The children have starred in a movie!! It will be débuted at the Honour Assembly in Week 10. Tickets are free so come along to the opening screening. The movie is all about Maths Power. Everyone had the opportunity to explore informal measurement in the Wangal Playground. We won’t tell you any more because we don’t want to spoil the surprise.

Harmony Day was celebrated on Thursday 19th March. Kindergarten sang up a storm with two big hits! They all looked gorgeous as each child was wearing a unique self-styled headband. We were all impressed with their serious application of the Harmony Day message of “Everyone belongs”.

Kindergarten was lucky enough to start Buddies in Week 7 with very capable Stage 2 students. Each fortnight the children will work with their buddy class to help develop skills needed at school. In Week seven 3/4P, 3/4K and 3/4C assisted Kindergarten to make their harmony headbands.

This Semester the Support Unit are embarking on a journey of learning…through the POLAR REGIONS. We have been learning about many of the different, and often strange, polar animals. Slowly our classrooms are transforming into arctic zones of blue and white – Snow and Ice!!

On Friday the 13th of March, the Support Unit went on an excursion to Canterbury Ice Rink!

We got to experience cold temperatures like in the Polar Regions that we have been learning about.

Everybody got a turn to slide on the ice like a penguin.

We would like to give a huge thank you to all the staff at Canterbury Ice Rink for making it such an excellent day.

Stage 1 have been busy completing assessments across all subject areas, we are nearly there! What an insight! There has been so much learning and progress. It is wonderful to see many great and pleasing results. Getting ready for Harmony Day and thinking about all that it means to each of us every day has been rewarding and lots of fun. Our Harmony Day assembly was brilliant as usual. Stage 1 enjoyed performing and showing off our talents. Our days are so full of learning, sharing and having fun that this term has gone by so fast. We are all looking forward to the holidays and continuing our learning at home. We will remember to read lots, play hard and be safe.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Stage 2Stage PageIn Stage 2, we have been designing cereal box covers.

Some things we needed to include so we got a good mark were appealing colours, free products in our cereal, characters, creative titles and creative slogans.

Some of the boxes were colourful, some were persuasive and some were persuasive and colourful.

There were different and unique cereal names like Magma Flakes, Power Crunch, Fizz Pops, Crunchy Bix, Sea Flakes and Football Pops.

Students also had creative slogans which made their cereal more appealing. Some slogans were ‘Join Your Friends for Breakfast’, ‘Buy It, Eat It, Love It!’ and ‘Power for the Day’.

Miss Karakatsis thought Alex’s slogan ‘Fire it Up’ was fantastic because it was creative and unique.

Collaborative Learning

What is it?Collaborative or cooperative learning can be defined as learning tasks or activities where students work together in a group small enough for everyone to participate on a collective task that has been clearly assigned. This can be either a joint task where group members do different aspects of the task but contribute to a common overall outcome, or a shared task where group members work

together throughout the activity. Some collaborative learning approaches also get mixed ability teams or groups to work in competition with each other, in order to drive more effective collaboration.

How effective is it?The impact of collaborative approaches on learning is consistently positive, but it does vary so it is important to get the detail right. Effective collaborative learning requires much more than just sitting students together and asking them to work together; structured approaches with well-designed tasks lead to the greatest learning gains. There is some evidence that collaboration can be supported with competition between groups, but this is not always necessary, and can lead to learners focusing on the competition rather than the learning it aims to support. Approaches which promote talk and interaction between

learners tend to result in the best gains.

How secure is the evidence?Evidence about the benefits of collaborative learning has been found consistently for over 40 years and a number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of research studies have been completed. In addition to direct evidence from research into collaborative learning approaches, there is also indirect evidence where collaboration has been shown to increase the effectiveness of other approaches such as mastery learning or digital technology. It appears to work well for all ages if activities are suitably structured for learners’ capabilities and positive evidence has been found across the curriculum. Not all of the specific approaches to collaborative learning that are adopted by schools have been evaluated so it is important to evaluate any new initiative in this area.

A 2014 review article of cooperative learning was conducted by academics at the University of Queensland. The article found that cooperative learning was most likely to be effective when groups included four or fewer students with mixed prior achievement, and when students work on tasks that require them to cooperate.

Considerations for Collaborative Learning• Students need support and practice to work together;

this does not happen automatically.

• Tasks need to be designed carefully so that working together is effective and efficient, otherwise some students will try to work on their own.

It is particularly important to encourage lower achieving students to talk and articulate their thinking in collaborative tasks as they may contribute less.

National School Chaplaincy ProgramAshfield Public School engages a school chaplain under the National School Chaplaincy Program, which is operated via an agreement between the Commonwealth and NSW Governments. The program enables a school chaplain to join our school community for 379 hours this year, which equates to about 2 days a week. The role of the school chaplain is to provide social, emotional and spiritual support to students, regardless of whether the student has a particular faith. Chaplains also help schools deliver non-religious wellbeing programs to build a positive school environment and to promote social skills and connectedness of students. Under the

agreement, a chaplain comes to a particular school via an external organisation. Our school chaplain is Heather Gorton. She comes to us through Reach Community Initiatives, which is based in Ryde. Heather has been part of the Ashfield Public School community since November 2007. She has also been part of the Ashfield Boys High School community since this time.

The Breakfast Club A delicious start to your day

At Ashfield Public School Heather is known as our Student Wellbeing Worker. This year Heather’s continues to operate the breakfast club before school, and tutor after school at the Homework Club. Throughout the day Heather works with teachers to support individual or small groups of students with a focus on social and academic skill development. Heather is also a proficient cook and teaches small group cooking classes. When needed, Heather also supports parents and makes referrals to different family services.Heather works at Ashfield Public School on Monday and Thursday each week. With our school focus on developing individual strengths, a love of learning and the capacity to achieve, Heather’s unique role to compliment teachers in providing a safe and supportive influence in our school community is valuable. Within a positive culture of student, teacher and parent wellbeing, we maximise the success of our students.

The Festival of the Horses - Ghode Jatra

Important celebrations take place in the Kathmandu Valley in March. A grand horse parade including various acrobatic style of shows are performed by Nepal military at Tundikhel-a fenced parade ground located in the heart of Kathmandu city. The celebration is attended by the state and government heads, ministers, high government officials and foreign dignitaries. This festival has become very popular and people from all over the country and foreign travellers travel to Kathmandu to attend the festival.

The festival tells a mythological story of a victory over a demon named Gurumapa, who lived in the meadow of the Tundikhel. There still exists a tree in the South-East part of the Tundikhel where Gurumapa is supposed to live.

The day before Ghode-Jatra, Newari-community people celebrates a festival; Panchare. Panchare is said to be a favorable day for consuming a large amount of garlic and meat.

It is believed that the sound of horses’ hooves on Ghode Jatra at Tundikhel keeps the spirit away. It is believed that, the faster the horses run the quicker Gurumapa’s spirit disappears. The fast running of the horses on this day is a good sign for the Nepali people.

Chinese Ambassador

Hello everyone we are the Chinese Ambassadors and in this article we will be talking about two things. First we will talk about the lantern festival which was held at the end of the New Year festival. In the lantern festival there is a tradition to hang all the lanterns on the trees in the park with a riddle on them. You pick the riddle that you know and you give to the organiser and tell them the answer and if it is correct you get a red bag with money in it

and if you get it wrong you have to put the riddle back. But the big news is that we have a new Chinese ambassador, Yeashla.

Maths HelpFor today’s maths help we will be telling you how to use squared.

For example, 102 = 10x10 = 1002. 10 2 means that you multiply it again with the same number. It is an easy way to do multiplication because it is faster to know the answer. But if you want to do it with the squared strategy, then you can do it.

Survey of the Week

Last week, we celebrated Harmony Day at school where we had a big assembly and in the evening we had a twilight picnic. So, we thought it would be a good idea if we surveyed some people about the day and how thought about it. Here are some of their opinions: 1. I think harmony day is great because

everyone can celebrate their differences and enjoy learning about other people’s cultures.

2. I think celebrating harmony day is awesome because people from different countries can feel safe and believe that they belong here.

3. Harmony day is a really good day to come together from different countries to celebrate each other’s cultures.

4. I think it’s a very special day because we get to recognise each other’s traditions and cultures.

5. Harmony Day is an awesome day to celebrate what makes us! We are all different in a very special way and we show our countries and learn about other countries.

6. I am very lucky to be able to share my stories about my culture especially when there are people from all the different countries.

7. Harmony day was amazing this year because almost everybody in the school were dressed up in their traditional costumes.

8. Harmony day is a really cool day to celebrate because we get to see each other in our traditional costumes and try different kinds of food from different countries.

9. The best part of Harmony day is the Twilight Picnic because we got to share our traditional food and try other cultures’ food.

10. Living in peace and harmony is a vital thing for everybody in the world and at A.P.S we understand so that’s why we celebrate Harmony Day.

I hope you liked celebrating Harmony Day as much as we did. By Tabatha and Lisa

Diary of a Volunteer

Cardinal Freeman Retirement Village

“Hi Ho! Hi Ho! It’s off to school we go”On Tuesday 3rd February Judith Anderson, Naomi Swadling, Gerry Sheedy and I met at Ashfield Public School and spoke with Ms. Rosemary Zamberlan who coordinates the volunteer program. We discussed our involvement for 2015 and how we could build on our success from the previous year including the amount of time we would spend at the school and what we would be able to contribute.

The biggest need at the moment at the school is for volunteers to go into the classroom and listen to and assist children

Apekchya Arthur

with their reading. I found this an interesting experience last year with so many different nationalities in the room. I have been told there are over 40 different languages spoken in the school with 2 more added this year. One student has come from Norway and the other from Papua New Guinea.

When I have been with the students we not only read we also talk about their backgrounds, families and how they like living here. I have learned a great deal.

On Tuesday 10th February we began our “going back to school” and I went into my first classroom for 2015 with the same teacher Ms. Shirley Peshos, but different children, ages 8-9 with a few 10 years of age. It was wonderful being back in that environment. I noted of course children from different nationalities and am looking forward to learning more about them.

I was at the school from 9.15am to 11.00am and will put aside Monday or Tuesday mornings. Around 10.00am the students went outside to an area near their classroom to eat their fruits, cut up vegetables and other foods. I was able to chat with the students and we then moved into the “Harmony Garden which various children had created last year. Parents donated different plants, shrubs, fruit trees and flowering bushes. The children planted them and now care for them. There is a gardening club one afternoon after school. The garden looks superb with all the different colours and varieties. The students are very proud of the garden.

I look forward to my time at the school; believe me it is a rewarding experience.

Dare to disagreeSo what does that kind of constructive conflict require? Well, first of all, it requires that we find people who are very different from ourselves. That means we have to resist the neurobiological drive, which means that we really prefer people mostly like ourselves, and it means we have to seek out people with different backgrounds, different disciplines, different ways of thinking and different experience, and find ways to engage with them. That requires a lot of patience and a lot of energy.

Excerpt from the transcript of the TED talk ‘Dare to disagree’ by Margaret Heffernan.

I have decided to draw Baymax, which is the picture with a big fat white robot and the one with the strong red suit, because I thought it can make people have a great day.
