3A Letter to the Teachers

A Letter to the TeachersDear teachers,Teaching English assures us one thing: we become our student's favourite person. It is the reason we get to sing with them, dance with them and act with them. It is the power to transport them to distant and wonderful places. It is a chance to leave a lasting impact in the minds of our children. True are the words: “A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a heart.” Remember teachers, happy teachers make happy classrooms. Here are a few tips to help you to enjoy your classroom experience and inspire the students you teach.

1. Be patient We have to be patient when we

deal with our students. We are dealing with different students, with different grasping powers and potential and their progress may not be uniform. “Every child is gifted, they just unwrap their packages at different times.” So allow each child to learn at his own pace.

2. Be loving and understanding A little bit of care and concern

can make a world of difference to your students. A smile, a pat of appreciation, a ruffle of the hair are all small gestures which go a long way to develop a teacher-student bond. If you will ask any person, 'Who was your favourite teacher in school' the answer will always be "the ever–smiling teacher".

3. Give them roots to grow and wings to fly

Arm the students with the right values and virtues. Ingrain in them the significance of humility, hard work and honesty and then simply set them free. Rest assured that they will make you proud.

4. Take them beyond the four walls of the school

Experiences should not be limited to textbooks alone. Give them a fair mix of curricular and co-curricular activities to provide an array of experiences. This will help to bring out the best in them.

5. Lead by example Your influence on the students is

much more than you can imagine. When you practise the right values such as those of honesty, punctuality, hard work and commitment, you will be effortlessly imparting the same lessons to your students.

"A child’s life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark."

6. Create noisy classrooms The more interactive and activity-

oriented your lessons, higher the chances of your lessons becoming lasting. Lorice Malaquzzi has rightly said, “Children need the freedom to appreciate the infinite resources of their hands, their eyes and their ears, the resources of forms, materials, sounds and colours."

4Teacher's Manual

7. Bring out your innate creativity Whether it is your blackboard work,

a chart that your prepare or the way you help the children to decorate the bulletin board, ensure that you keep it interesting and visually appealing. Every chart, every mind map, every project you create makes the journey of the students more joyful. Go for it.

8. Innovate and ideate Move beyond the ordinary to create

extraordinary lessons. Don’t be stuck in a rut, bid adieu to outdated methods of teaching and come up with unique lesson plans which impart knowledge, understanding, values and skills. Yes, you can do it.

9. Never lose an opportunity to develop a sense of responsibility

Students are the future of tomorrow so inculcate in them leadership skills, the ability to communicate and above all, a sense of responsibility. This will ensure that they take on their future roles with élan.

10. Keep building self-worth Keep telling them how unique, how

special, how extraordinary each one of them is. Remind them that they are loved and that they are respected.

11. Be a life-long learner It is said that the best teachers are

artists who know the science of teaching. And since science keeps evolving constantly, you must keep evolving. Keep updating your knowledge and changing with changing times.

12. Stay passive Yes, there are times when we should

let our students take over. After all, isn’t "the art of teaching, the art of assisting discovery?" So, make way for collaborative way of learning, activities, project work, field visits and so on. The list is long….use your imagination to help the child find his own way and stand on his own feet.

13. Put technology to good use Despite the advantage of the

traditional methods of teaching, we cannot deny the power of technology in a classroom. Films and slide shows, documentaries and power point presentations are all wonderful ways to impart so much, in so little time.

Let me conclude with the words of Dan Rather:

"The dream begins with the teacher who believes in you,

Who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau,

Sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called the truth.’

Yes, teachers, that’s you! You have the power to shape destinies, change the future of an individual, the future of a nation, the future of this world. Go for it! Put your best foot forward. Each one of us can make a difference. And each one of us will.

All the best as you continue your journey to teach, to instruct, to enlighten, to illuminate, to create, to enrich.…

5What is Grammar?

What is Grammar?ll English grammar is a bridge which

aids in communicating what we wish to convey in appropriate words, using the English language. Simply put, English grammar is an organization of words and sentences to communicate effectively and correctly.

ll The ideas we wish to express can be conveyed through one word, a group of phrases, a group of clauses or a sentence. We begin with a word and end with sentences to enjoy the entire journey of teaching and learning grammar.

Why should grammar be taught? The right knowledge of English grammar is extremely important to help the children connect and communicate well.

Objectives of teaching grammar1. To ensure that we facilitate

understanding the language correctly.

2. To help students use the language to communicate effectively.

3. To acquaint the students with the structure of the English language and how it operates.

4. To help them use the correct patterns of the language.

5. To emphasise that every rule has a purpose and an application in English grammar.

6. To develop appropriate listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

7. To help students become global

citizens (as the English language is spoken by majority of people living across the globe).

8. To help students to excel in academics as well as in their lives ahead.

9. To ensure that the students use the language with clarity and correctness to avoid miscommunication.

10. To develop a love for the English language and propel them into a journey of discovering the beauty of words. To help them explore the hidden wealth in English literature.

Points to remember while teaching English grammar:

ll Don't teach English grammar in isolation, teach it contextually for better results.

ll Exercises on identification (such as identification of nouns or articles) help only till a point. They are a good way to help the students understand a topic. However, after a certain point emphasis should be on usage.

ll A total grammar program comprises listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

ll Emphasise the rules of grammar.ll Make continuous evaluation

through grammar exercises a matter of routine.

ll Give examples of good literature to explain grammar topics. This will also help the students to fall in love with books.

Teaching English GrammarFunctional grammarFunctional grammar emphasizes on the use of the spoken and written language in real-life situations. It gives a lot of importance to the way language is used contextually.

Differences between traditional grammar and functional grammar:1. In traditional grammar, we are more

concerned about how the sentence is formed or structured whereas in functional grammar, the emphasis is more on how meaning is conveyed.

2. In traditional grammar, we analyze the sentences while in functional grammar we analyze the complete matter provided.

3. In traditional grammar we are more concerned about the syntax i.e. the arrangement of words and phrases to create complete sentences. However, in functional grammar the emphasis is more on semantics i.e. the study of meaning in English.

Methods to Teach English Grammar

Gone are the days when we rote memorized the rules and depended on repetition to learn grammar. Thanks to the adoption of creative approaches, we have various innovative and interesting methods to teach grammar. Let us explore different methods and select the ones which are best suited for the lesson in hand.

1. Inductive methodll This method believes in enlisting

examples that illustrate a grammar concept.

ll Students are expected to observe the examples and understand the grammar concept at work from the examples provided.

ll Once the concept is clear, the student is introduced to the definition of the concept. This helps the students to understand the different rules of English grammar in a contextual manner.

ll Develops logical thinking in the students. It enables clarity and brings about permanency in learning.

ll More the examples, higher the retention of the topic being explained.

Advantages DisadvantagesTakes the learner on the road of discovery and learn the rules more effectively.

It may be time consuming if previous knowledge of the student is limited.

Encourages active student participation in the classroom leading to highly motivated and attentive students in the classroom.

The lesson plan needs to be very effective or the students will get demotivated.

Page 7: EverydayEverydaE Teacher's TeachEr's ManualManuEl Teacher's... · 2018-03-27 · 3 Teaching English Grammar 6 4 A Model Lesson Plan 13 ... The lesson plan needs to be very effective

7Teaching English Grammar

Develops self-worth in the students and makes them confident that they can master the intricacies of the English language.

If not guided properly, students may end up with incorrect understanding of the topic.

2. Deductive methodll Here the teacher first explains the

grammar concept very well and then the students are asked to identify the grammar concepts in the exercises provided.

ll ‘Explanation before application’, is the principle followed here.

Advantages DisadvantagesIt is a time saving method.

Previous knowledge is not a must.

It gives ample scope for practice and application.

Teacher becomes the center of the class and discourages student participation.

It develops analytical skills in the students.

Encourages rote memorization.

It is an easy technique for teachers

The beauty of learning the language may be lost.

The rules of grammar are emphasied.

Grammar is taught in isolation and not in context.

ll It is a more teacher-centric approach

Practice is reduced to mechanical way of doing exercises and monotony may set in.

Inductive-Deductive MethodAs we have seen, both the methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Ideally, the teacher uses both the methods to eliminate the disadvantages of both.

Examples illustrating the rules are provided. Exercises and activities

make learning permanent.

Deductive method

Rule is stated and explained.

Observing the exercises and activities, students arrive at the

general rule.

Inductive method

Exercises and activities are provided.

8Teacher's Manual

Here are a few tips which will help you to excel in your grammar class:1. Use age-appropriate content.2. Encourage the use of grammar in

different situations.3. Teach grammar in context.4. Provide diagnostic and remedial

teaching to the students.5. Follow the maxim: easy to difficult.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. The following will help you to plan your lessons and explain the concepts clearly to the students.

1. Preparing before starting Preparation is very important

before you begin a lesson:a. Define the objectives of the lesson. b. Have a through understanding of

the topic in hand.c. Think of ways in which you can make

your lesson activity–oriented. For eg. If you are teaching parts of speech you may start with the traditional game i.e. name, place, animal, thing.

d. Think of ways in which you can simplify the concepts for the students.

e. Arm yourself with ample exercises.f. Think of ways to maximize classroom

participation.g. Encourage the students to observe

and analyze the examples provided.h. Help them to arrive at the rules easily.i. Make learning permanent with

constant practice.

j. Design child-centric worksheets and exercises.

k. Conclude your lesson with projects and assignments and the next day, evaluate the learning outcome.

l. Revisit the old topics even as you move to new topics.

2. Defining the objectives of the lesson:

A good lesson plan should always begin with objectives of the lesson. For eg, when teaching the students parts of speech, our learning objectives will be:

a. To help the students understand that there are eight different parts of speech into which words in English language can be divided.

b. To help them identify the different parts of speech.

c. To understand the definition and function of each of the eight parts of speech.

d. To explain that the same words can be used as different parts of speech.

e. To help use the appropriate words at the right places.

3. Using the activity methodActivity method is a way to teach grammar concepts through specially-designed, interactive activities.

Advantages of the activity method1. Makes way for joyful learning. 2. Makes learning interesting and

effective.

Page 9: EverydayEverydaE Teacher's TeachEr's ManualManuEl Teacher's... · 2018-03-27 · 3 Teaching English Grammar 6 4 A Model Lesson Plan 13 ... The lesson plan needs to be very effective

9Teaching English Grammar

3. Encourages collaborative learning.4. Students become active participants.5. Helps to retain student attention.6. Does away with the monotony that

can creep in when the lessons are teacher-centric.

For an effective activity-based grammar lesson:1. Adopt a learner–centric approach.2. Create an environment that is

conducive to learning.3. Allow the students to set the goals for

each activity.4. Choose interactive and interesting

activities.5. Encourage collaborative learning

amongst students.6. Evaluate the activity constantly.7. Encourage the students to speak in

English only.8. Nudge the students towards

taking their own responsibility for developing grammar skills while doing an activity.

9. Act only as a guide and facilitator.10. Ensure maximum involvement of all

the students.

Working towards an activity-oriented classroom:Activities serve dual purpose: help the students to learn grammar in a contextual manner as well as develop co-operation and healthy competition amongst the students. This collaborative approach helps students find joy in learning and be rid of the monotony of a lecture.

Activities that can be organized in the classroom:

a. Songs: For example, play the song "Heal the World" in the class. Encourage them to first sing along, then analyze the song to understand its message. Then, slowly correlate the different grammar concepts through the song. This melodious experience will leave a lasting impact on the students.

b. Poems: Poems can be used to teach figures of speech as well as a variety of topics. For example, teach parts of speech using the poem "Daffodils" and see the results.

c. Games: Design your own games or use the good old popular games like ‘Snakes and Ladders’, ‘Ludo’, card games etc. Add a little twist to these games to make an ordinary lesson fun.

d. Drama and skits: Explain the rules of direct and indirect speech through a drama. The impact will be spectacular. Once the skit has been performed, help the students analyze the way the dialogues were written. This will help the students understand the rules of transforming direct speech into indirect speech.

e. Assignments and projects: Assign projects to be done alone and in groups. Once you have explained a concept, ask the students to find out more about a topic by visiting the library, researching on the Internet and interviewing people. This will help them develop a broader perspective about the topic. Indirectly, it will force them to talk and communicate in English.

10Teacher's Manual

f. Quizzes and other competitive activities: Divide the class into groups and conduct vocabulary building and grammar enhancement sessions. Limit your role to that of a facilitator to let the spirit of competition up the level of learning.

g. Compilation projects: Select a topic and let the students compile interesting information about it. This will aid in bringing out their creative side.

h. Group discussions: Provide a platform to the students to express what they know through group discussions. A healthy way to improve classroom interaction, it will also aid in clarifying grammar concepts.

Use of elocution, poetry recitation competition, fancy dress, speech and storytelling, news reading activities are some of the other activities that can be employed to make the classroom fun.

4. Using Technology: Use websites and apps to get

inspired.

Use the following media:a. Movies.b. Cartoon programs.c. Documentaries.d. Interactive learning modules.e. Educative channels like Discovery

and National Geographic.f. Online testsOur efforts should be to ensure that as they go through the above experiences, they associate what they learn in the classroom in real situations and put it to practical use. Remember, keeping the motivational level of the learners high should be our prime objective. Using a fair mix of the above mentioned methods we can bring our class alive and help them to excel in English grammar.

Without language, one cannot talk to people and understand them; one cannot share their hopes and aspirations, grasp their history,

appreciate their poetry, or savour their songs. – Nelson Mandela
