SAN BERNARDINO—In- land Empire NABI was hosted by AMF Arrowhead Lanes this past Saturday for a great com- petitive tournament. John Kimberling, our newest champion, was on his game from the very start, since he was our high qualifier. John has been bowling since he was a teen, and loves the game. His highest game ever bowled was a 300 bowled at Concourse (now Arlington Lanes) in Riverside. He also bowls in a league at Riverside Lanes on Thursday evenings. John won this tournament with many fans watching. Quite a few of his family were there to see him take the “prize”. He wants to dedicate this NABI win to his 19-year-old grandson Nicholas, who he immediately called to tell of his Grampa’s triumph. John also won $900 with op- tional upgrade and a champion shirt. Congratulations!! Our top five started out with AMF Cerritos Lanes – November 19 th , 2006 (l-r): Felicia Mara – 3 rd ; Michael Foley – 1 st ; Deanna Carrillo – 2 nd . CERRITOS—Welcome to the latest JAT Farm Club up- date, live from AMF Cerritos Lanes. Our last tournament was on November 19 th , with thirty- one bowlers trying their hands at a new or another title. The scoring was rather low as it’s been a couple of years since the JAT came to this center. The Farm Club as a whole averaged just over 169, but took away memories and lessons that I’m sure will be applied to centers in the future. A few single game reportables were on hand as Kevin Jones gave us the qualifying high game with a 257. Your claim to fame Kevin. Other high games were from Patrick Smith 247, Felicia Mara 244, Darren Pascual 242, Mark Curtis 232, Albert Fernandez 231, James Bael 230, and Michael Foley 222. Consis- tency was the name of the game as Bael led all after five at minus 52. The cut line of the top 16 came in at minus 136. In match play we had a few more single game highs as Foley pushed up the tournament high game with his 258. Others in- cluded Charlie Hair 246, Jon Hogan 232, Deanna Carrillo 226, Smith 224, and Mara 223. Foley also took the biggest advantage of match play with a seven po- sition jump to leader at plus 38. The finals started off with 5 th seed Smith (-53) taking on 4 th seed Carrillo (-34) wanting to make in back-to-back titles. Carrillo took the first match 163- 158. Now against 3 rd seed Hair (-25), Carrillo step it up a notch to claim this win 250-167. Then it was on to meet 2 nd seed Mara (-7) as the two ladies battled. Carrillo advances to the title matches with a 177-162 win over Mara. In the final, best two of three, Carrillo won the first match from top seed Foley 203- 153. But with the new format, Foley ties it up with a second game win 189-152. And in the deciding match, it couldn’t have gotten any closer as a missed pin gave the match and title to Foley 157-156. Congratulations Michael. Bowlers, we announced a schedule change for this weeks tournament. On Sunday Decem- ber 3 rd , we will be at AMF Bowl- ing Square in Arcadia. Also, this tournament will be an extra $5 dollars, making the tournament fee $30. This extra fee will help ensure our scholarship payout. Check-in begins at 7:15 and prac- tice will start at 8:00. USBC’S Registered Volunteer Program ServesAs Model For Other Youth Organizations

U. S. Olympic Committee Adopts BackgroundCheck System Developed by NCYS and NCSI

GREENDALE, Wis.—The goal to protect our nation’s youngathletes from sexual predators received a major boost recently whenthe United States Olympic Committee revealed details of its newbackground screening procedure for team leaders, coaches and addi-tional officials involved in the 2007 Pan American Games.

The USOC is requiring its sports’ national governing bodies toutilize the services of the National Center for Safety Initiatives(NCSI), the Cleveland-based screening organization owned and gov-erned in partnership with the National Council of Youth Sports(NCYS).

Earlier this year, the United States Bowling Congress (a chartermember organization of the NCYS) and the NCSI tested and begana national roll-out of USBC’s Registered Volunteer Program, whichwas designed to serve as a model for other interested organizationsdedicated to preventing abuse of their young athletes and programparticipants.

“We have been working with the NCYS and NCSI to implementnational standards to protect youth participants and volunteers, regardless of the type of sport or social activity,” said USBC ChiefExecutive Officer Roger Dalkin.

“Having the USOC adopt the ‘red light/green light’ backgroundcheck system developed by the NCYS and NCSI and used in USBC’sRegistered Volunteer Program means we’ve taken the next big stepto meeting our goal. I sincerely hope that other youth sports organi-zations and youth membership groups will join us in our efforts toprotect children and teens from abuse.”

The “red light/green light” background check system providesvital results information while maintaining the privacy of individu-als being screened.

USBC Continued:by John Jowdy

Several months ago, the USBC issued a newsletter regarding theRefocus On System Of Bowling Research….Bowling Balls, Bowl-ing Pins, Lane Conditioning, and Lane Surfaces.

In a previous column, I addressed the areas of bowling balls andbowling pins. However, I experience great difficulty in expressingmy views on out-of-control areas of Lane Maintenance and LaneSurfaces, as presented by the USBC newsletter dated 9-18-06.

In addressing Lane Conditioning, the USBC goes into detail re-garding oil application of lane conditioners, which is the liquid ap-plied to wood and synthetic lanes. USBC experts explain the twopurposes of lane oil:

1. To protect the bowling surface and2. Affect the difficulty level of the game, depending on how it is

applied.Currently, the USBC is working to develop a device that mea-

sures the amount and location of friction on a lane. Serious bowlersknow that friction between a bowling ball and the lane surface dic-tates how much the ball will hook. This is not a startling revelation. The application of oil on lanes has long been the source of fictitiousscores that have made a mockery of the game.

I would like to sensibly address lane maintenance proceduresand surfaces but it would be an exercise in futility. The recent USBCpress release of record-shattering scores indicate no slow-down offake, ultra-phony, ridiculous bowling scores that continue to beaccepted by the USBC. In addition to these unfathomable scoresthat have degraded, and distorted our game, our governing bodyPROUDLY sends out press releases to glorify these “lane doc-tored” records.

A USBC News release, dated, 9/28/06 listed the following record-breakers among the 2005-06 season:

1.On March 19, a women’s team posted a 3-game series of 3610.This represents an average of over 240 per bowler.

2.during the 2005-06 season, a three-man team shot two-300’sand a 297 to set a one-game record of 897. Folks, this is an averageof 299 per bowler.

3. All other records were mixed teams; those with men and womencompeting together. On April 7, a five-player team of three womenand two men, shot 1305…a “mere” 261 average per bowler.

4. That game helped this team to post a 3625 total, the highestever for a three-women/two men team series. This averages out to a725 series per player or a 241 average per bowler.

5. On October 3, 2005, a three- women/one man team shot 1,048,meaning this four-person group averaged a “paltry” 262 per bowler.

6. During the 2005-06 season, a team from Wisconsin consistingof four women and one man set a team game record 1126. Thisfigures out to a 225 average per bowler by one man and FOURwomen !

How can I, in all honesty, not respond to such absurdity? Whendoes it stop? Where does it end?

Sports-minded readers ask, “how do amateur bowlers outscoreand out-average professionals?” Can anyone blame sports editorsfor considering bowling primarily as a recreation?

Why do I take such umbrage, displeasure, and bitterness at thedirection our game is going? Why? Simply stated, I’d like to seebowling accepted principally as a SPORT, not a recreation. I’d liketo see bowling ranked among other individual sports such as golf, racing, tennis, and track. I’d like to see our bowling professionalsrecognized as athletes. I ‘d like to see major bowling events recog-nized in the sports pages of American newspapers.

I have no problem with bowling being classified as a recreation. However, I am violently opposed to rewarding recreational bowlerswith national notoriety and sacred records.

So what’s the answer? I strongly recommend that any newrecords ONLY be awarded on Sport Bowling Conditions or in com-petitions that meet USBC standards. This is, by no means, meantthat record bowling scores performed on recreational conditions beignored. Nonetheless, instead of being rewarded with rings, plaquesor medals, recreational bowlers should be complimented with cer-tificates designating the nature and classification of their feats.

Several years ago, bowlinghailed the consolidation of theABC, WIBC, and YABA underthe banner of the United StatesBowling Congress. I sincerelyhoped that USBC would assumea greater role in restoring integ-rity to bowling. But alas, noth-ing has changed. As a matter offact, the only meaningful rulechange by the USBC is, “it willno longer issue its “High Score“ awards for scores rolled dur-ing unopposed bowling sessionsbefore or after regularly sched-uled league play.

Woefully, this rule changewas prompted by the accep-tance of teenager RobertMushtare’s questionable two (hereported three but one was re-jected) 900 three-game seriesthat stirred up the greatest scor-ing controversy in bowling his-tory. Unfortunately, it was toolate.

Hopefully, there is still timeto take drastic steps to curb thenonsensical scoring madness…despite the severity of the pos-sible consequences.

Editors note: Big thanks toJohn for your articles. It has beenour pleasure to print your ar-ticles for 20 years. Keep the gamepure! Thats our goal.

National Deaf Bowling NewsA 7 Pin Denies Malucci A Perfect

Game at La Habra 300 Bowlby Connie Marchione

LA HABRA—On Tuesday night November 16 in Frank’s GoldCup League at La Habra 300 Bowl after rolling a 214 in first game, the deaf bowler’s premier 300 shooter Carl Malucci strung 11 strikesin row in his 2nd game. His 12th ball went in the pocket just like theothers but a 7 pin refused to fall. The Whittier lefthander finishedthird game with a 267 for his second 780 series. That 299 secondgame is Malucci’s career 12th.

Two weeks prior in this same league Malucci hit front 10 in rowbut ended up with 287 and a 778 series. Also after winning theNational Deaf Master Bowlers Championship at the Orleans in LasVegas on October 1 Malucci had a 278 in his first 780 in that LaHabra league.

While that was not his best league series this season, Maluccishot a 280 and 781 in his other league, Angel West Deaf League atAnaheim Concourse Bowl. In that NDMBA tournament at LasVegas, Malucci battled head to head with Detroit deaf pro PeteKaczmarczyk in 2nd block of qualifying round, setting a tourna-ment record 790 for first 3 games (254-279-257) and finished witha 740 for a tournament record 1530 for 6 games.

Not wanting to grab all the spotlight, Malucci noted that DanielVasquez, Jr who also bowled in the same league with him at LaHabra Bowl had a near miss also a short time ago, rolling front 10strikes in row for a 287 game in a 737 series.

In ending Malucci added a classic understandment, (they are)“All near misses but there’s no if, could, or but in bowling. Some-times you get ‘em and sometimes you don’t. right?”

LINDY DECKER HITS 791 IN HER YORK LEAGUEYORK, PA—When I emailed to Lindy Decker that there is an

item about her deaf women’s record 847 series in the Bowler Jour-nal International magazine’s November issue. She liked that andasked what’s new in deaf bowling. I mentioned Malucci’s missing aperfect game with a 299, his two 780s and a 781 in his leagues andDeGroff’s 299 and 760 in his. Decker replied that recently she hada 791 in her York league.

USBC ModifiesRules RegardingAccetable Awards

For YouthGREENDALE, Wis.—The

United States Bowling CongressBoard of Directors has approvedthe modification of Youth Mem-bership Eligibility Rule 400, ef-fective immediately, to expandthe awards deemed acceptableunder the terms of USBC Youthmembership. In addition to pre-viously allowed symbolicawards, USBC Youth membersare now eligible to be awardedbowling equipment, gift certifi-cates, apparel and other mer-chandise prizes with a total valuenot greater than $500 in any oneevent, excluding scholarships.

The modifications also allowfor USBC Youth members tocompete in singles competitionwhere cash and/or bonds areawarded, as well as merchandiseprizes exceeding $500 in total inany one event, but must waiverights to these awards by sign-ing and completing the USBCPrize Waiver form prior to theirparticipation in that competi-tion.

Acceptance of awards ofcash or bonds of any amount orany merchandise prizes with atotal value higher than $500 perevent remain prohibited foryouth members under USBC’srevised Rule 400. Violations ofthe terms of Rule 400 could re-sult in the loss or suspension ofyouth membership.

There also remains no limiton the value of scholarships thatcan be awarded in youth com-petition. The scholarship fundsfrom USBC certified events andleagues will continue to be re-quired to be deposited withUSBC’s SMART program.USBC Youth members may beawarded scholarships fromsingles competition in whichcash and/or bonds are awarded.

The USBC Board deter-mined that the former Rule 400placed unnecessary restrictionson everyone associated withUSBC Youth membership andconcluded the best course of ac-tion to alleviate this issue wasto modify Rule 400 effectiveimmediately,USBC PresidentMichael Carroll said.

The previous version of Rule400 intended to protect the cur-rent and future interscholasticsports eligibility of USBC Youthmembers through the most re-strictive interpretations and limi-tations. The USBC Board con-cluded that placing these restric-tions on all USBC Youth mem-bers was unnecessary due to thelack of uniform eligibility stan-dards for interscholastic sportsnationally.

The new structure of USBCallows for addressing of signifi-cant issues to be handled in anexpedited manner, said USBCChief Executive Officer RogerDalkin. The previous version ofRule 400 placed undue and un-intended restrictions on USBCYouth members, league and as-sociation coordinators and pro-prietors. The USBC Board modi-fied Rule 400 to address heserestrictions and expand accept-able awards that promote andenhance the participation inyouth bowling.

The USBC Board concludedthat compliance with local/stateinterscholastic eligibility rulesand policies is the responsibil-ity of the individual member andhis/her legal guardian. However,USBC will continue to educateUSBC Youth members and theirlegal guardians that competing inUSBC certified competitions andacceptance of some awards nowacceptable under Rule 400 couldjeopardize individual memberinterscholastic sports amateureligibility.

SED Jr. Travelby David Gordon

CERRITOS—SED Jr.Travel took to the wood at AMFCerritos Lanes in their last ses-sion on November 18th. This wasa double session giving thebowlers a chance to correct theirmistakes from the first session. It had been a while since thegroup was at Cerritos and itlooks like we’ll be back moreoften or until they get it right. Also I purposely held this ar-ticle a week to give you a re-fresher and a reason to return.

In the first session the smallturnout struggled a bit. But then– HERE HE COMES TO SAVETHE DAY – J.D. Pelow postedup an 204-205-237/829 set toshow it could be done. Way totake the lead. Other reportablescoring, Jasmine Morales 214/752, Andy Betancourt 202/745,Eric Milne 228/728, Kevin Jones724, Mark Curtis 236/722,Bryan Osborne 710, A.J. Garcia234, and Deanna Carrillo 220.

In the second session, somelearned their lesson and the scor-ing was a touch better. But like Itell the bowlers, these are theconditions that they’ll want tomaster, making them that muchbetter. Pelow took the top spotagain in this session going 227-278-212/867. See, even he foundimprovement. But in this ses-sion J.D. was not alone. Garciajoin in on the fun with his 234-242/827 and Osborne had a 236-208/810 set. Nice bowling gentle-men. Other highs came in fromBetancourt 202/764, Jones 202/753, Michael Gaylor 746, MaxSlevcove213-210/724, and Milne724.

Our session this Saturdaywill be at AMF Bowling Squarein Arcadia. Everyone, pleaselook for a mass email giving theaddress and directions. I mayalso call on some of you. We hada lot of absences recently andthere is a lot to catch up on aswell as up-coming events forDecember. Spread the word andlet’s get everyone out there. Talkwith you soon.

Girls Jr. All-Starsby David Gordon

C E R R I T O S — A M FCerritos Lanes was the site ofthe last session before Thanks-giving for for the Girls Jr. All-Stars. The lanes were prettybeaten up from the early tour-nament and hard to figure out ingeneral. However, the ladies tookin the lessons and made it a goodday anyway.

Melissa Pena takes the spot-light on this week with a 205/750 set. Nice bowling M. Wealso had reportables from Jas-mine Morales 230-235/731,Deanna Carrillo 216/712, andLindsay Hannasch 711.

I’ll catch everyone up on teamstandings and season highs nextweek. This coming Sunday, theladies venture to AMF BowlingSquare in Arcadia. Start time willbe around 2:00. This is anothersite that we have not been to inquite a while. Bring that mental-ity. See you soon.
