What’s new in Autodesk 2014 for Education? The new Autodesk line-up is helping you teach students professional workflows that allows engineers and designers to communicate, share and design with teams located anywhere. In addition, Autodesk in improving the value of the Design Suites by making it easier to create 3d designs from both laser scans and digital photos. Incorporate products or the environment, even if you do not have the design documentation. Here are some of the other new features for 2014.

In every 2014 Autodesk Design Suite:No need to start from scratch in designing. With Autodesk® ReCap, you can bring in the actual job site or product through the laser scan or digital image to start with points, then add, modify, validate and document from there.

Another addition in most Suites is Autodesk® AutoCAD® Raster Design. This powerful vector conversion software will allow you to take advantage of raster images, maps, aerial photos, satellite imagery, and digital elevation models by enabling you to edit, enhance and maintain scanned drawings or plans.

Autodesk Design Suites Highlights for 2014:

Extending the CloudWith Autodesk 360, the power of your Autodesk solutions are multiplied. Design, visualize, simulate and share your designs and ideas with anyone from anywhere. New tools are added each year and for 2014, Autodesk® InfraWorks 2014 has been included for Infrastructure Design Suite and Building Design Suite customers. This tool, formerly known as Autodesk® Infrastructure Modeler, assists engineers with BIM adoption for planning, design, construction and management of civil infrastructure projects.

3rd Annual Student Competitions

About the F1 Challenge:If you don’t know about the F1 challenge, it is open to high schools and middle schools and focuses on inspiring students to learn more about engineering. The challenge is not just the design or racing of the cars however. The students are required to run the project like a business. They are required to find sponsors to cover the costs of all expenses, find mentors and consultants, and create a marketing and business plan, in addition to designing and manufacturing their product (the car). Learn more and visit the F1 Challenge Website (www.f1inschools.sae.org).

Synergis–F1 Competition Winners! For the last three years, Synergis has been supporting the F1 in Schools students by offering a competition and additional prizes (including cash) for students to win. All they need to do is submit their design portfolio additionally to Synergis for our engineers to review for design. Our engineers focus on how the students designed, evaluated and validated their cars.

On March 9th, we presented the awards at the regional F1 Regional Pennsylvania Championship at Robert Morris University in Moon Township, PA.

We awarded Lunar Racing First Place because of their car design, and their interactive display was impressive as well.

Rush International team members work to increase the speed of their car between runs.

First Place: Lunar Racing, from Pine-Richland High School

Prize: $1,000 and the opportunity to present at Synergis University.

Lunar Racing used visualization in addition to simulating their designs before creating a physical model, they also created rendered eye-catching images of their designs. Visualization is a step in the workflow that enables stakeholders and future buyers a photo-realistic view of a product before its produced. It is easier on the eyes than a 2D drawing and more confident design decisions can be made early in the process, creating less time and material waste in physical prototypes.

Second Place: Rush International, from Wilson West Middle School

Prize: $500 and the opportunity to present at Synergis University.

This was Rush’s first year competing and even though they started later than most teams, they placed First for Middle Schools at the race. Why did our engineers like their project? They used the simulation tools inside Inventor to test the design, before building the prototypes. This is a practice that most manufacturers are using to cut down on costs and on time to market.

Third Place: The tScreaming Eagles, from South Park High School

Prize: Opportunity to present and attend at Synergis University.

This team has been together for 7 years and it shows in their work. At the championship, they had an eye-catching display with multiple iPads to explain the design process and tell more about the team. In addition they also had several versions of the car on built-in shelves. Our engineers liked most that they used the Free Autodesk Labs app, Project Falcon (an addition to Inventor), to simulate and test the force effects on their design.

During the month of May, you will have the opportunity to vote on your favorite design by high school students. You might remember last year, we had introduced a project to design a community center focused on energy and cost efficiency and we had great projects entered. It was close race among the top three last year on Facebook and this year is even better.

Design Project: Adaptive Re-Use

Our industry clients are doing as much reconstruction it seems as new construction. To make classroom learning true to life, we recreated an old ‘Main Street” double with a storefront and offered drawings and pictures of the structure today. The project is to reconstruct the current building into a children’s museum. Giving the students real drawings and space constrictions allows them to understand the real-world design concerns of the day.

Check it out on our Synergis Engineering Design Solutions’ Facebook page and enter there to win 2 passes to see the winners present at Synergis University 2013 on June 5.

Screaming Eagles team members have competed together for 7 years.
