DAY 05 Almost a full day of relaxation and lectureson the train, today you are passing throughthe plains of Western Siberia and reachNovosibirsk late afternoon. With 1,5 millioninhabitants Russia’s third largest city and thebiggest of Siberia, it is widely regarded as thecentre of Siberia. It stretches upto 26 miles from east to west and more than370 miles from north to south. Lake Baikalis the world’s deepest lake, reaching 1.620meters at its deepest part. The mountainranges around Lake Baikal and the deepblue water of the lake, create remarkablememories that last a lifetime. This morningthe private train is running at low speedalong the scenic Circum Baikal Railway linebetween Port Baikal and Sludyanka, whichfor many years is used only by a few of localtrains and tourist trains. A photo stop willbe arranged at a small village where you canget off the train, put your feet into the clearand cold water of Lake Baikal and also visitthe typical wooden houses of local people.A Baikal barbecue is also a part of theprogram. This afternoon a boat takes youon a short cruise from Port Baikal to thesmall village of Listvyanka. DAY 10Ulan Uday is the capital of the “BuryatAutonomous Republic” of the RussianFederation. Buryats are an ethnic groupclose to Mongolians with an amazing mix ofcultures. Ulan Uday is a meeting placebetween East and West. Like Irkutsk, the citystill has large areas with typical Siberianwooden houses. Your sightseeing excursiongoes to “Ivolginsky Datsan”, the largestBuddhist Monastery in Russia. When leavingUlan Uday, the Grand Trans-SiberianExpress switches from the Trans-Siberianmainline to the Trans Mongolian mainlineon its way to Ulaanbaatar. The train reachesthe Russian border station Naushki and theMongolian border station Suchebaatar.Russian and Mongolian immigrationformalities will take place in the train. DAY 11 This morning the Grand Trans-SiberianExpress arrives in Ulaanbaatar, the capitalof Mongolia. During a sightseeing tour youwill visit the famous Ghandan Monastery,the central Sukhabaatar Square, the BogdKhan Museum which used to be formerlythe winter and sometimes also the summerpalace of the Khan’s, as well as the Zaisanmonument at a viewpoint high above thecity. From there you will have an excellentview of the city which is surrounded bylarge areas of nomadic yurt settlements. Anamazing cultural music and dance show willintroduce Mongolian folk music and cultureto you. Standard PlusStandard Plus as well as Deluxe Silver are the most popular type ofaccommodation on our private train. Standard Plus cabins are equipped with 2lower beds and 2 upper beds. While only the two lower beds are used forsleeping, the two upper beds can be used as additional storage for luggage – orthey simply can be folded away. Toilets and wash basins for common use aresituated at both ends of each Standard Plus sleeping car. The sleeping cars areair conditioned (central control). The air condition operates only during the timethe train is moving. Sockets for 220 V are available in each cabin, capable forrazors, loading mobile phones, cameras and notebooks.
