ARTS TRAIL

Travelling through Dutchess County, the visitor passes farms and villages, small cities and great estates dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Skilled craft work has always been part of the culture and economy of the region. Basket-makers and blacksmiths, potters and furniture-makers have served their neighbors and made a living from their work since the first European settlers came to the area. Some of them adopted skills they learned from Native Americans living in the Hudson Valley.

Now the work of craftspeople meets quite a different set of needs. Although utility and function still play a part in the world of contemporary crafts, at least as important are two other qualities — tradition and delight.

Tradition may take the form of carrying on an ethnic or family heritage of workmanship or it may express the skills learned from a master artisan in a studio or art school. Metal-smiths and woodworkers, weavers and potters learn the technology and design approach and then add their own skill and intuition to produce distinctive work.

Delight has so many aspects: the whimsy of a doll or puppet or stuffed animal, the subtle colors of a blown glass vase, the humor of a metal garden ornament or screen-printed apron. Each object is unique and conveys the person-ality of its maker.

Exploring the craft trails of Dutchess County opens the door to a rich variety of treasures, from simple gifts to precious keepsakes. Throughout the year there are dozens of craft fairs that can be a “first encounter” with high-quality craft work, and an opportunity to meet the people who produce it. There are a number of shops and galleries scattered throughout Dutchess County, that show and sell work by artisans. And many crafters make their studios or workshops available to visitors on a regular basis or by appointment.

Barns and garages, firehouses and storefronts, spare bedrooms, converted factories, attics and basements, have all taken on new life as the work space of crafters.

Many crafters will create special works to meet a partic-ular need, whether it be custom-designed furniture or a unique costume or a wedding-ring. Their workmanship is more than just a matter of expert technique. It also helps define the character of this special place in a way that larger commercial enterprises cannot match. Exploring the craft trails of Dutchess County can lead to new delights. Enjoy!

Arts Along the HudsonThe arts scene is enjoying renewed interest with the opening of contemporary art museum Dia: Beacon, and excitement about waterfront development in Poughkeepsie and Beacon. Art galleries show new works in refurbished historic building and former storefronts. Our five colleges have striking museums/galleries to showcase distinctive permanent collections and special temporary exhibits, as well as works by students and faculty. Dutchess County is filled with art in public places as well as back room galler-ies you’ll enjoy discovering for yourself. You can even see artists at work in their studios, carrying on centuries-old traditions, from glass blowing to painting.

Each Saturday in the Hudson Valley is a celebration of the arts! Plan a weekend getaway along the Hudson River around two special days for art. On two distinct Saturdays, art galleries in both of Dutchess County’s riverfront cities stay open late so you can make the most of gallery openings, artist receptions, music, theatrical events and dining out. Also known as “Culture County”, Dutchess County’s special days are Second Saturday in Beacon and Poughkeepsie’s ArtHop on the third Saturday. Gallery guides, maps and trolleys are available to help you schedule your own journey of discovery. Visit ArtAlongTheHudson.com. Refresh your mind – discover the arts!

Craft Fairs and Art FestivalsFrom serious customers to window shoppers, we all like to have many choices. Art is very personal, so it’s fun to see a lot of different types of artisans who will inspire your own creativity. That’s why arts and crafts fairs are enormously popular, and make for an entertaining day; some even offer food and entertainment. Artists and craftsmen work in many mediums, creating fine, museum-quality pieces as well as fun, functional art to satisfy the bargain hunter in you.

“Crafts at Rhinebeck” festivals are held spring and fall at the picturesque Dutchess County Fairgrounds. Thanksgiving weekend brings two established fairs: at Dutchess Community College, and Van Wyck Homestead Museum Revolutionary War site, where you can also have lunch in their 1732 kitchen! Columbus Day weekend, see Artists in the Garden at the lovely Vanderbilt Mansion, or check out the Harvest Festival at the Webatuck Craft Village on the Ten Mile River. In June, catch a ride to the Fishkill Trolley Craft fair on the village green.

To find area arts and craft shows, visit our website’s searchable calendar at DutchessTourism.com or call 800/445-3131 for your free copy of “Happenings”, our seasonal event calendar.
