Keys to Effective Prewriting

ò  Select a topic that you know or have researched well and want to write about

ò  Write a focus statement that clearly states the controlling idea of the essay.

ò  Gather details that will make your explanation clear and interesting

ò  Organize your details using a cluster, chart, or gathering grid.

ò  Use a list or an outline as a planning guide.

Prewriting Selecting a Topic

ò  The purpose of your essay is to explain how to door make something. However, your essay should be more than just a list two directions. You need to guide your reader so they can easily understand and follow each step in the steps, you need to explain each key idea with evidence.

ò  To select a topic, think about things you know how to do or make. Making a cluster or web diagram like Soledad’s below is one strategy for gathering ideas for your how-to essay.

Create your own cluster.

ò  Start your cluster with “Things I know how to do our make.” List as many ideas as you can. Then put a star (*) next to two or three of your favorite topics.

ò  Choose a process that has enough steps and details to keep your audience interested. The process should be also one that interests you and that you understand well. Consider a process that is especially fun, challenging, or unusual.

Sizing Up Your Topic

ò  To make sure a topics is appropriate list the steps that are involved. Discuss the topics with a classmate to test if they will interest someone in your audience. These two strategies will help you size up the topic. If you look at Soledad’s lists below you’ll see that “Repairing a bicycle tire” my be tow broad or complicated, while “Making boiled eggs” may be too narrow. “Making Paper,” however, has about the right number of steps.

ò  Your focus statement incudes the topic and controlling idea you center your writing around. This formula will help you write a focus statement.

Gathering and Sorting Details

ò  Remember, the details you gather for your essay should relate to the controlling idea. A chart is one way to organize the details for your essay.

ò  Gather and sort your details. Choose an organizational strategy for your own topic. One strategy could be to chart the “steps” you will have under three headings: “To begin,” “To continue,” and “To finish.”

Planning Your Paragraphs

ò  Your essay as a whole has a controlling idea that helps to focus your writing. To be effective, all the paragraphs in your essay will be linked by the one common controlling idea. Your essay needs a strong introductions (first paragraph) that gives the focus statement. The steps you listed in your conclusion (last paragraph) should summarize important points that support your controlling idea.

Writing Topic Sentences

ò  The main idea of a paragraph is usually stated in a topic sentence. The other sentences in the paragraph give evidence to support the main idea. Your goal for each paragraph is to guide and inform readers so they understand the key idea using your evidence.

ò  Look again at the steps in your planning chart on page 172. In your middle paragraphs, each of your topic sentences can start with one o these phrases: to begin, to continue, to finish. Here are the topic sentences for he middle paragraphs in the essay on pages 167-168. Notice that each one covers a different part of the dog-washing process.

ò  To begin, get the bath ready and gather what you need.

ò  To continue, begin bathing your dog.

ò  To finish, dry your dog as completely as possible.
