BETHLEHEM. – After spending 39years on the Nooitgedacht farm outsideBethlehem, the Khumalos were evictedand dumped under the trees in LamondStreet in Bohlokong, Bethlehem.Mafitla Simon Khumalo (71) and his

wife, Mirriam (68), were evicted lastThursday following a court order whichwas submitted to them.Simon and Mirriam, the parents of 13

children, were left homeless with six oftheir 13 children and three grandchil-dren.They were left on the street with

their furniture and Express Eastern FreeState was informed that 28 head ofSimon’s cattle were dumped at theMôrelig Cemetery. It is alleged that onecow died there.The Dihlabeng Local Municipality

assisted the family in moving theirfurniture from where it was dumped.Apparently the Khumalo family and

the Janmark Eiendomstrust, the newowners of the farm, had been fighting alegal battle over the farm since 2010. Inthe end the court ruled in favour of thetrust and the Khumalos had to vacatethe farm, but they never did.Mirriam said she was shocked when

the people forced their way into herhouse without any explanation.“I was still outside. I followed them.

When I got there they were taking thethings and loading them onto thetruck,” Mirriam said, crying.“I had R3 000 under the mattress with

which I was going to buy clothes forthe kids and that money has disap-peared.”She said the only thing that they had

said to her, was that they had to leavethe farm because they did not needthem there.“I tried to talk to them, but one of

the police officers who was with themsaid, ‘I will tell them to beat you now’,”Simon said.“They gave me a paper and explained

that it said I had to vacate the farm.“I have 28 cattle.”A certain man known to Khumalo as

Itumeleng of the Department of RuralDevelopment and Land Reform arrivedat the place where the furniture wasdumped, driving in a white bakkie.

He refused to talk to Express EasternFree State, saying he had no authority totalk to the press.However, when responding to the angry

people who had gathered at the scene, hesaid Khumalo was legally evicted.“He should have left the farm a long

time ago, but he never listens. Ourlawyers informed him about the court

decision,” he said. “No, I did not comehere to respond to those questions,” hesaid as onlookers piled on more questions.“I only came to check if the old man hadhis cattle,” he said before he left.Tshediso Maitse of the Marketing and

Communication Unit of the DihlabengLocal Municipality confirmed that themunicipality had indeed assisted the

family with the furniture and livestock.“We also offered them accommoda-

tion, but they told us that they wouldprefer to stay with the family inBohlokong. The cattle are kept at thePiteli Family Trust Farm and thefurniture is stored with the municipali-ty,” Maitse said.) Read more on p. 4.

BETHLEHEM. – A strong windstorm that only lasted around 15minutes have left over hundredfamilies in Bohlokong, Bethlehem,without roofs and caused extensivedamage to residential properties onTuesday night.The wind started blowing around

18:45 and ripped the roofs off manyhouses.The areas which were most

affected, were Giyane, Old Locationand Loso.The overhanging electricity cables

were torn down in Giyani, whilesome cables had blown-off roofpanels hanging from them.Despite the damage to property, no

injuries of deaths were reported.Eskom employees attended to the

cable damage quickly and theelectricity supply was restoredduring the evening.Monimoni Maduna (32) from

Extension 2 said they were watchingtelevision when a strong windstarted blowing and they could feelfrom inside the house that the roofwas being torn off.“Suddenly the wind stopped and

we went outside to look for the roofs.It was lying at another house. Theroofs of the back bedroom and agarage was torn off. The neighbourscame and helped me to bring theroofs back and put a sail on,” hesaid.Tshediso Maitse from the market-

ing and communication unit at theDihlabeng Local Municipality saidthey were aware of the incident andadded that the municipality’s PublicSafety/Disaster Management Unitswiftly responded by providing somerelief measures in the form of sailsto protect properties and goodsagainst further damage.“Unfortunately due to the extent of

the disaster and resource limitations,not all households could be helped at

once,” he said.He said the wards mostly affected

were 2, 3 ,4, 8, 11, 16 and 19.“All in all, well over 100 houses

and other dwellings, the majority ofwhich are owned by the indigentresidents, were damaged, with roofshaving been blown away,” he said.Maitse said a team supported by

council members is on the groundassessing the situation, havingalready visited every affectedhousehold.“The damage in monetary terms

has not been quantified at this stage.Each intervention measure will bebased on merit.”The task team will report back and

the municipality will decide on amore permanent remedy.“As the municipality, we would

like to make a heart-felt appeal toeverybody who can, to please comeforward and lend a helping hand.Any form of assistance is welcomedand will be highly appreciated.”

HARRISMITH. – Paulos Moloi, the chief ofthe Makgolokoeng Village near Harrismith,provided the Masibonisaneni Sonke Projectwith a site for their centre which will bebuilt soon.Masibonisaneni is a non-profit organisa-

tion which was launched in 2011 with theaim of helping those who are in need. Sinceits inception it has assisted many familiesin Harrismith and the surrounding areas,

such as Makgolokoena, Intabazwe andKwalanyoni. They have donated foodparcels, blankets and clothes.Because of the good work that they have

done for the community, Moloi handed overthe site to the project manager on Thursdayfree of charge.According to Collen Charlie, the project

manager of the Masibonisaneni SonkeProject, the project has grown significantlysince it was formed and added they felt itwas time to build a centre where communi-

ty members could visit them.“We approached the village chief a few

months ago to ask for a site because wewanted to build a centre. He told us that hewould meet with his members to talk aboutit and I am happy that they came with apositive answer,” he said.Charlie said it was good to see that the

project’s good work was appreciated.“We have decided to build the centre in

Makgolokoeng because that is one of thevillages with a high unemployment rate

and poverty is a big concern here,” he said.He said they have started asking for

donations to build the centre. “We arehoping to start building early next year.”Moloi, a member of the Free State House

of Traditional Leaders, has welcomed theproject in his village and said he is quitesure that it will change the life of manylocals.“They have assisted families in the past

and we believe that if they are based here,they would be able to assist even more.”

ACCORDING to the papersin Express Eastern FreeState’s possession, the casebetween the Khumalo familyand the Janmark Eiendoms-trust started in 2010.The first eviction order,

which was signed on 15December 2010, reads: “Thegrounds on which theeviction order will besought are as follows:Section 8 (2) & (3) MafitlaSimon Khumalo was anemployee whose right ofresidence arose slowly froman employment agreementwith the previous owner.His service was terminat-

ed in a circumstance whichdoes not amount to con-structive dismissal asdefined in another RelationsAct of 1995.The homestead of the

above-mentioned respond-ents has thus been terminat-ed, because of the aforesaidand a notice to vacate thepremises have been given.The Khumalo family

appealed for the first timeafter the court had ruled infavour of the trust.However, they lost the

case again with the courtissuing them with the orderto vacate the farm by 31October 2013.The order further stated

that: “Further in case therespondent and all personsliving with him have notvacated the said Nooitge-dacht 65 farm on 31 October2013, the court authorises a

warrant of ejectmenteffective from 1 November2013.“The sheriff, if need be,

assisted by the police isauthorised to execute theejectment order.”According to the judge-

ment, Du Toit testified thatKhumalo just stoppedworking of his own free willwhilst still on the farm, butwas still living on the farmwithout working.He later requested him to

leave or vacate the farm,but Khumalo did not do so.Du Toit later sold the farmto the applicant, the DuPlessis brothers, leavingKhumalo there and the newowner to deal with him.“He further testified that

while he was no longerworking at the farm heasked him to vacate thefarm which he did not do.He also offered him alterna-tive accommodation whichhe refused,” the judgementreads.It is also stated in one of

the court papers that theagreement between Khumaloand the previous ownerstated that Khumalo couldonly keep six livestock onthe farm, but he wascurrently keeping 27 cattleon the farm. “Evidence isthat the appellant is cur-rently using more grazingland than was allocated tohim by the farmer,” thereasons for the judgementreads.

spokesperson, said good relationsbetween the community and policein Qwaqwa seemed to bear positiveresults on a daily basis.He said the community of

Mandela Park saw ten peoplewalking in Mandela Park carryingbags of copper wire towards anearby scrap-yard on Friday atabout 14:00.“It is suspected that the copper

wire was cut at the TshesengVillage and brought to the MandelaPark scrap-yard for selling. Theyimmediately informed the policewho spotted the suspects. Theychased the group and caught fourof the ten.“Their arrests hopefully will lead

to many arrests of people cuttingcables in the area.“The four suspects aged between

26 and 36 will be expected toappear before the PhuthaditjhabaMagistrate’s Court soon facingcharges of theft of copper wire,”Mophiring said.“I want to thank the communi-

ties that show concern of mattersthat affect their lives, including thecutting and selling of copper wirein Qwaqwa.“We cannot as society and

scrap-yards allow thieves to sellsuspected stolen goods which affectthe lives of all. It also affects theeconomy of Qwaqwa and disablescommunication and electricitysupply. Let us reject and reportsuspected stolen goods,” said theFree State provincial commission-er, Lt Gen. Thabethe Mpembe.

principal of Manthatisi, said hewas very happy to have suchan event held at the school.“The PCA approached us

PHUTHADITJHABA. – Action research tobetter classroom practice and to improvestudent success rates recently received aboost when the Qwaqwa Campus Teachingand Learning (TL) Champions were hon-oured with the prestigious University of theFree State (UFS) Vice-Chancellor’s TeamAward.It was in recognition of the team’s efforts

in enhancing professional development andwas accompanied by R50 000 that will beutilised to further encourage and develop ascholarly culture on the Qwaqwa Campus.“An active learning community has

developed over the past four years and thishas created a scholarly forum for the sharingof problems, experiences and new knowl-edge,” said Dr Elize Smuts, who has been thepillar of strength in the development of TLChamps.Smuts has continuously motivated the

group to persevere in challenging and oftenunder-resourced contexts.“Over a four-year period, 44 projects were

undertaken, many with great success. A totalof 13 scholars participated in a pilot of Classe(Classroom Assessment of Student Engage-ment) in 2013. This survey, contextualised bystaff of the Centre for Teaching and Learn-ing, was a first in South Africa.”The team undertook extensive literature

reviews and attended numerous workshopson the principles and practices of goodteaching, research and writing.“The two summary booklets they prepared

from two publications (How Learning Works:7 Research-based Principles for SmartTeaching and Student Engagement Tech-niques) in 2013, will serve as guides andinspiration to the larger academic communi-ty of the UFS for many years.”Since the formation of this team, TL

Scholars have presented 25 papers at 12national and two international conferences.“Taking into consideration that it is not

easy to get an abstract accepted for presenta-tion, these are impressive achievements.Some of the immediate results of theseengaged scholars include improved studentsuccess rates averaging 20%, compared toonly 8% improvement by academics who arenot in the project.“In 2013, one TL Scholar reported student

success rate that increased by 29%; anotherreported 80% on average; another anincrease from 65% to 95% in a bigger classthan in the previous years.”In congratulating the team, Annette

Wilkinson, professor at the Centre forTeaching and Learning (CTL), said that shewas very proud of the team.“The team’s dedication and growth in

scholarly practice – in challenging circum-stances – are in my mind the outstandingfeatures of the project. I am very proud ofthe entire team,” said Wilkinson.The two presentations at international

conferences were done by Lea Koenig at the32nd Annual Conference on the First-Year-Experience in Orlando, Florida, and bySmuts in North Carolina. Both of these werein 2013.

procedure to open murder dockets. But therehas been a number of cases where law-abid-ing citizens, or even the victims acting inself-defence, have been arrested. We againcall on the authorities to change the name ofthese dockets, which might somewhat easethe trauma. In fact, we regard this practiceof calling such dockets murder dockets asinfringing on the human rights of those thathave been implicated. We congratulate theneighbours who acted swiftly to ensure thatthe alleged farm murderers did not get away.Our hearts go out to the next of kin of

Johan van Rensburg who was killed in thefarm attack. This also again proves howridiculous it is to have more cops for VIPprotection than those defending the borders,and to bestow all kinds of medals on PoliceCommissioner Riah Phiyega.

Another compa-ny, Truss Mecca (Pty) Ltd., wasestablished in 1998 which special-ises in the manufacturing andsupplying of roof trusses accord-ing to the ITC standards.Hardware Mecca is a family-

owned company now in its secondgeneration of management. Theinitial founder of the company isnow retired and, along with hiswife, serves as director of thecompany.

blast of Hardware Mecca tradingas Brick Mecca Crushing Plantwas heard at its stone quarry nearDaniëlsrus. It was a proudmoment for this family business.Duard Valks, shareholder of the

Hardware Mecca Group, says thestone-quarry is an extension of thebusiness’s existing activities,which includes a hardwarebusiness, brickworks and rooftrusses business. Josua Grobler,the manager of Brick MeccaCrushing Plant, and Ruan vanNiekerk, the manager of BrickMecca, visited the site on 10 June.Grobler, who works as a construc-tion manager, spoke to experts togather as much information aspossible about this new course thebusiness is taking. He did mining-related courses and completed thenecessary examinations afterhours to ensure compliance.It took these two men and their

team of workers about threemonths to move 60 000 m³ to80 000 m³ of earth, equal to about4 000 loads.This was done to prepare the

site for the company Sure Blast ofTheunissen that was responsiblefor the blasting. It took Sure Blastabout a week to ready the explo-sives. On Wednesday, the excite-ment was tangible as a group ofbusinessmen and bystanderswaited in suspense about 1,3 kmfrom the blast site.About 36 000 tonnes to

38 000 tonnes of rock was blastedloose. This is approximately 1 000to 1 500 loads comprising 33 tonnesper load which needs to beprocessed and transported. Valksbelieves it will take about two tothree months to process all therock. Great quantities of processedstone will be used at the brick-works, but good quality stone willalso be offered to the public atcompetitive prices.Four new trucks have been

bought and the stoneworks willsoon be expanded to increaseproduction for the business to berun more effectively. Two or threenew construction product rangeswill also be produced soon. Castproducts such as kerbstones and

THE Maluti-a-Phofung LocalMunicipality has three servicecentres or urban nodes located inthe form of a triangle.

Kestell is located 44 km to thewest of Harrismith along the N5national road and 30 km to thenorth of Phuthaditjhaba (Qwaqwa)along the R57.

Geologically the area comprisesfour rivers and many streams. Thefour largest rivers are the Khopt-jane, Namahadi, Sekoto and Kolola tshwene Rivers that flow intothe Elands River which in turnflows into the Wilge River.

They run mainly in a northerlydirection, and many rivers andstreams have their origin withinthe area.

The area falls within thecatchment area of the Vaal River,and the two major water sourcesin the Qwaqwa area are the FikaPatso and the Metsi Matsho Damsand in Harrismith the Wilge River.

The Sterkfontein Dam is thethird largest dam in South Africa,and is situated within the munici-pal area halfway between Harri-smith and Phuthaditjhaba.

Due to the increasing populationwithin the Maluti-a-Phofung LocalMunicipality, Fika Patso andMetsi Matsho cannot meet thegrowing demand for water in thismunicipality, especially inQwaqwa and Kestell.

At this time of the year mostpeople use more water for garden-ing and other purposes and damlevels are decreasing rapidly.

At this point in time the FikaPatso Dam is about 53% full andMetsi Matsho about 80%.

The Sterkfontein Project andMakwane Water which is current-ly under construction will alleviatethe water demand and improveservice delivery for these twoareas (Qwaqwa and Kestell) infuture.The current challenges Map Water– as an entity of The Maluti-a-Pho-fung Local Municipality – isencountering to ensure sustainablewater supply in the water systemsare as follows:) to maintain and operate ageinginfrastructure;) to operate water pump stationswith the frequent power failures;and) to implement bylaws andaddress unauthorised connections.

It is planned to make provisionfor an infrastructure upgrade andrefurbishment that will ensuresustainable service delivery to theconsumers.

With all the challenges that MapWater as an entity of the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality isfacing it can still announce that inaccordance to SANS 241 of TheDepartment of Water Affairs andSanitation, the drinking water isof high standard and Map Water isstill maintaining the Blue Dropstatus obtained in 2012.

use water wisely:) Install a low-flow shower headand tap aerators on all taps.) Insulate your water pipes. It iseasy and inexpensive to insulateyour water pipes with pre-slitfoam pipe insulation. You will gethot water faster and avoid wastingwater while it heats up.) Use your dishwasher andwashing machine for full loadsonly, automatic dishwashers andwashing machines should be fullyloaded for optimum water conser-

vation.Most makers of dishwashing

soap recommend not pre-rinsingdishes which is a big watersavings tip. With washing ma-chines, avoid the permanent presscycle, which uses an added 20litres for the extra rinse. If you are in themarket for a new washing ma-chine, consider buying a water-saving frontloader machine.) Rinse your razor in the sink.Fill the sink with a few millilitresof warm water. This will rinseyour razor just as well as runningwater, with far less waste of water.) Turn off the water after you wet

your toothbrush, there is no needto keep the water running whilebrushing your teeth. Just wet yourbrush and fill a glass for mouthrinsing.) Water your lawn only when itneeds it, a good way to see if yourlawn needs watering is to step onthe grass. If it springs back upwhen you move, it does not needwater. If it stays flat, the lawn isready for watering. Letting thegrass grow taller (to 3”) will alsopromote water retention in thesoil. Most lawns only need about1” of water each week. During dryspells, you can stop wateringaltogether and the lawn will gobrown and dormant. Once coolerweather arrives, the morning dewand rainfall will bring the lawnback to its usual vigour. This mayresult in a brown summer lawn,but it saves a lot of water.) Water your garden during theearly parts of the day; avoidwatering when it is windy. Earlymorning is generally better thandusk since it helps prevent thegrowth of fungus. Early watering,and late watering, also reducewater loss to evaporation. Water-ing early in the day is also thebest defence against slugs andother garden pests. Try not towater when it is windy – wind canblow sprinklers off target andspeed evaporation.) Do not run the hose whilewashing your car. Clean the carusing a pail of soapy water. Usethe hose only for rinsing – thissimple practice can save as muchas 750 litres when washing a car.Use a spray nozzle when rinsingfor more efficient use of water.Better yet, use a waterless carwashing system; there are severalbrands, such as Eco Touch, whichare now on the market.) Check for leaks in pipes, hoses,faucets and couplings. Leaksoutside the house may not seem asbad since they are not as visible.But they can be just as wasteful asleaks indoors. PHUTHADITJHABA. – IsmailKathrada, the owner of Buy &Build Hardware, is the newowner of the Sasol Garage at theSetsing Shopping Complex inPhuthaditjhaba, Qwaqwa.

He bought the garage from theAsmal family.

He said he was overwhelmedto venture into a differentbusiness after having spent morethan five years in the hardwareindustry.

“The Asmal family had a lotof investments in Qwaqwa andone of those was the garage,”

Kathrada said.“Asmal is now moving out of

the retail environment. He iswith property development. Heapproached me saying we had asuccessful relationship and thathe was offering me a garage. Hesaid he knew that I would makea success of it.

“I said fine. I have manpower.Manpower in a sense that it wasmy three sons and I. I then madethe offer.”

With just a month and twoweeks as the owner of the petrolstation, Kathrada has big dreams.

“We haven’t done anythingbesides changing the ownership.

The staff remained the same andwe are not planning to doretrenchments whatsoever.

“All we want to do is to growthe business like we did withQwaqwa Buy & Build,” he said.

Kathrada said over a periodof months people would seechange.

“We are going to bring in afranchise. I am not going to tellwhat franchise it will be, butsurely that will be added,”Kathrada said.

Kathrada said he was veryhappy with the support from hissons and added that they werelearning from him.

his achievement is social respon-sibility.“I do a lot through social

responsibility. My budget for thatis about R30 000 a month. In thelast five years I have built aboutsix houses for the community ofQwaqwa. They are for the child-headed households and theelderly,” Kathrada says.He says the community sees the

work that he has done and thathas resulted in people coming innumbers to support the business.“I don’t think many of the

businesses are involved in thetype of social responsibility that Iparticipate in.“People have always come back

to me and said to me that I wasdoing an excellent job and pointedout that they would keep onsupporting me.”Kathrada was once the manager

of the same Buy & Build back in2003 while it belonged to theAsmal family. He worked there,was a manager for five years andwas later approached to do themanagement buy-out.“After five years, they asked me

if I did not want to do a manage-ment buy-out. I worked out thefigures and agreed to that. Sincethen this business has grown.”Buy & Build has two branches

in the Eastern Free State: one atthe Namahadi Village near theCharles Mopeli Stadium and one

in Harrismith.Kathrada says the other thing

that makes him different fromother businesses is that his profitdoes not go out of Qwaqwa.“I am locally based. My profit is

boosting the economy of Qwaqwa.A lot of companies have headoffices in Johannesburg, Durbanand Cape Town and that means

their profit is channelled out tothe shareholders.“We don’t have shareholders. It

is my three sons an I in thecompany and we all live inQwaqwa.“The grandchildren are schooled

here also.”He says he is tremendously

happy with the support that he

has been getting from the Qwaqwacommunity.“We are giving value to our

customers here. We fight on acontinual basis with the suppliersto bring the prices down. We don’tjust accept.“We are the cheapest in the

hardware industry here inQwaqwa,” Kathrada says.

REITZ. – Petr Havenga (18)a learner at the High SchoolReitz, has been selected asExpress Eastern Free State’sSuperSport Let’s PlaySports Star of the Month forOctober due to his achieve-ments in athletics, tennis andrugby.

Petr is a multi-facetedsportsman who does well inall the sporting disciplines hecompetes in.

For 2014, Petr was selectedfor the Eastern Free Statecombined u.17 and u.19 tennisteam. He took part in theinterprovincial championshipsin Klerksdorp.

He was also part of theEastern Free State team at theVKB Rugby Week. He plays inthe wing position.

Petr also has a number ofimpressive achievements inathletics. At the AthleticsSouth Africa Championshipsin March, he achieved thirdplace in the 400 m event andwas part of the 4x400 m relay

team that also received a thirdplace.

He was part of the 4x100 mu.19 relay team that won thegold in the South AfricanSchools competition.

He was chosen for the SouthAfrican athletics team tocompete in the u.20 games inBulawayo and Zimbabwe inDecember.

Petr’s motto is: The harderyou work, the luckier you are.

Petr is the last SuperSportLet’s Play Sports Star of themonth for 2014 for ExpressEastern Free State.

He will now compete againstall the other montly winnersannounced throughout theyear for the coveted title ofSuperSport Let’s Play SportsStar of the Year.

The overall winner will beannounced at a privatefunction on 22 November.

BETHLEHEM. – Themba Sithole, theFree State Stars development academyhead coach, said his team is more thanready to compete in the South AfricanFootball Association (Safa) Free StateABC Motsepe League.

He said he was afraid that theremight not be enough competition forthem in that league and that theywould end up winning it unchallenged,but added that thinking like that couldbe deceiving.

“The MultiChoice Diski Challenge isthe standard according to which theseboys should be playing.

“I think the standard in the MotsepeLeague might be lower than this.I don’t know. We might go there andwin the league in our first season,” hesaid.

Sithole has been with Ea Lla Koto forthe better part of his football career.

He attended several coaching coursessince being with the team and isexpected to do well with the develop-ment team.

He was given the task of guiding thefirst team on two occasions as a take-carecoach but failed to produce the resultsproving the division too difficult for himto handle.

However, it cannot be denied that he hasworked with many of the experiencedcoaches and would have learnt a lot fromthem. These include Gordon Igesund,Owen da Gama and Kinnah Phiri andSteve Komphela.

With the Motsepe League coming hisway he seems quite adamant to win it.

But a blind eye cannot be turned onhis scouting experience in which hehad been proven to be excellent over the

years.“My boys are ready for the division.

We have played a few games in theMultiChoice Diski Challenge and onecan see that the boys know what to doon the field.

“Some of the teams that we playedagainst had Premier League players andwe matched them.

“This means our journey in theMotsepe League might be easy,” hesaid.

Sithole, who was recently joined byhis former team mate in David Vilaka-zi, said they had more players to do thejob and added that some showed a realhunger for doing their job.

“We’ll promote some players to thefirst team in January and loan someof them to the SAB League or theNational First Division (NFD) teams,”he said.
