VoIP Today: VoIP is Maturing

• Consumer Penetration– 4.46B Skype minutes used, 58M downloads

– > 1.3M paying VoIP subscribers (Vonage, Skype, CableVision)

• Enterprise penetration (IP Centrex/PBX).– Incumbents upgrading their solutions to support IP (SIP)

• Cisco, Nortel, Avaya all moving towards IP PBX support

• 2004 IP PBX new lines surpassed PBX new lines

– Broadsoft, Sylantro, Vocal Data, Centile emerging for IP Centrex.

– Recent major announcements from large enterprises (e.g. Bank of America, Ford)

• Carrier Penetration

– Class 4 trunking solutions very mature

• Pros: – Cost (cheaper than cellular), coverage (leverage existing broadband

infrastructure so no new towers, BTS, BSC, etc. required), usage (~40% of calls made could be done using broadband)

• Cons:

– Internet (unaffiliated networks), WiFi QoS

Page 10: Extending User Service Access Using Broadband VoIP

VoIP Today: Trends

• Broadband is up to 27M in 2003

– 46% Year over Year

– Europe and APAC lead US in broadband reach

• VoIP is growing fast

– 1 million in 2004; up from 131K in 2003

– MobileVoIP is a sector event

– Interest across all major service provider groups

– Competitive threats exist

• It’s happening. Now

VoIP Today: Opportunities

• Broadband / Mobile penetration

– Broadband and Mobile penetration high

– Broadband passes the majority of residences and businesses

• Bundling

– Mobile voice is the lead application

– Subscribers shop for the best bundle

– Bundles want a VoIP offer

• Client/Device alternatives

– It’s about the identity, not the device

– It’s about anywhere, anyplace communication, not the device

– It’s about using best device at the moment

Phase 1Phase 1

• Aggregate subscriber communications spend across services

• Defend against new entrants

• Pricing led

• Margin challenged

Simple Bundling

Phase 2Phase 2

• Optimize service delivery

• Reduce delivery costs and recover margins

• Combine services –single number, voice mail, SMS, MMS.

• Bucket plans

Advanced Bundling

Phase 3Phase 3

• Tailored services at the right place and time

• Ubiquitous services no matter the location –

Mobile and VoIP Working Together: What

• Standardize basic functionality between networks– Interwork non-mobile devices

– Automatic network selection

– Seamless roaming

– Active call handover• Broadband VoIP <-> CDMA CS

• Broadband VoIP <-> CDMA VoIP

• Identify network impacts on applications– Broadband is faster, but QoS can vary

– Applications may need awareness of network switch-over• Example: Defer handover if it would disrupt an application?

• Work towards “voice is a data application” paradigm– Much better service interaction when voice is no different from

other data applications

Page 19: Extending User Service Access Using Broadband VoIP

CDG VoIP Summit, 8 Feb. 2005 18

• Intelligent Devices - Specify Standards– Service providers can specify devices

– Network selection, roaming, handover, authentication, etc.

• Intelligent Networks - Specify Standards– Authentication, billing, enforcement, provisioning, security

– Access independent services

– Seamless roaming and handover between access networks

– MMD/IMS services for today and tomorrow

• Intelligent Services – Interconnect Service Providers– Operator owned

– Enterprise owned

– ASP owned

• MobileIGNITE - Industry Collaboration– IOT and service definition/refinement

– Open standards, robust and varied service interconnection

– Develop approach for emergency calling – particularly robust location detection

• Multiple channels to end users

– Mobile carriers, cable MSOs, DSL providers, ISPs, WISPs, independent VoIP carriers, Verisign

• Architecture applies to GSM as well as CDMA

• Dual device scenarios – volume market sooner than dual mode phones

• MMD/IMS alignment enables migration from legacy MSC

– IP to IP calls, and IP to PSTN calls do not require MSC

– Backhaul efficiency using IP not A-interface

– Results in cost advantage enabling price competition head to head with PSTN

• SIP based

– Enterprise IP PBX interworking

– IP Centrex compatible

– Wireline IP telephony compatible

• Centrally host-able for roaming & clearing (e.g. Verisign)

• Nomadicity: leveraging better QoS for applications

• Leverage existing media gateway/softswitch investments
