Introduction to Facial Recognition System

Page 4: Facial powerpoint

Pioneers of Automated Facial Recognition: Woody

Bledsoe, Helen Chan Wolf, and Charles Bisson Development funded by an unnamed intelligence

agency that did not allow much publicity Recogition with a “graphics tablet” (GRAFACON or

RAND TABLET) Development difficulties: great variability in head

rotation and tilt, lighting intensity and angle, facial expression, aging, distance etc.

overcome by normalizing distances to represent the face in a frontal orientation through computer

Developement

Traditional

• Some facial recognition algorithms identify facial features by extracting landmarks, or features, from an image of the subject's face. Other algorithms normalize a gallery of face images and then compress the face data, only saving the data in the image that is useful for face detection. A probe image is then compared with the face data

3-dimensional recognition

• A newly emerging trend, claimed to achieve improved accuracies, is three-dimensional face recognition . This technique uses 3D sensors to capture information about the shape of a face. This information is then used to identify distinctive features on the surface of a face, such as the contour of the eye sockets, nose, and chin.

Skin texture analysis

• Another emerging trend uses the visual details of the skin, as captured in standard digital or scanned images. This technique, called skin texture analysis, turns the unique lines, patterns, and spots apparent in a person's skin into a mathematical space.

Software using facial

recognitionGoogle's Picasa digital image organizer has a built in face

recognition system . It can associate faces with persons, so that queries can be run on pictures to return all

pictures with a specific group of people together.

Sony's Picture Motion Browser (PMB) analyses photo, associates photos

with identical faces so that they can be tagged accordingly, and

differentiates between photos with one person, many persons and

nobody.

Facebook includes face recognition technology

Windows Live Photo Gallery includes face recognition

Applications of facial recognitionDeveloped applications Undeveloped applicationsUsed in security systems

Used in other systems

Biometric usages Other usages

Trial a facial recognition system built into borough-wide CCTV system

Use for visa processing

Used for a portable device to assist people with prosopagnosia in recognizing their acquaintances

Modern digital cameras often incorporate a facial detection system that allows the camera to focus and measure exposure on the face of the subject, thus guaranteeing a focused portrait of the person being photographed.

Use facial recognition software to search for potential criminals and terrorists

Use by casinos to catch card counters and other blacklisted individuals

Use as a security measure at ATM's, which would capture an image of your face, and compare it to your photo in the bank database to confirm your identity.Used facial

recognition software to prevent voter fraud

Survey Result

Both two groups mainly want try using the system in laptop/computers.

-Face Recognition Grand Challenge(FRGC) was created in 2006 and becomes 10 times more accurate than before. It can recognize the identical twins

-The error rate decreased by one-half every two years

Further Development

Page 15: Facial powerpoint

Positive:-Fast and convenient in identifying a person- Great use in society: - crime detection - security use

Negative:- Errors rate is still not satisfactory- Privacy - personal biometric data kept by the system- Change of facial characteristics – wearing of glasses
