At Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Comskil Training Program provides training for more than 200 health care professionals every year, including attending physicians, fellows, residents, and nurses1. These learners participate in multiple teaching modules tackling challenging communication situations in oncology. The program uses best practices for communication skills training, including role play with standardized patients, in small groups of three learners. We follow a general practice of having each small group co-facilitated by a discipline-specific facilitator (e.g., surgeon for surgery fellows, nurse for nurses) and a communication specialist. Consequently, the number of facilitators needed to support this program is large, and the need for continual facilitator training and assessment is crucial.   As one of the largest communication skills training programs in the country, and with current funding from the National Cancer Institute to support the program, we have thus developed and published clear guidelines for facilitation skills, facilitator training, and assessment of facilitator competence 2, 3. The purpose of the proposed GEA/GSA mini-workshop is to present a shortened version of our Comskil facilitator training module. We believe that what we have developed and learned in training facilitators over the past seven years will be helpful to AAMC members interested in improving their own facilitation skills. In addition, we will also model for faculty developers how they might conduct similar workshops in their home institutions.
