Coming to university should be an exciting momentin your life, with the prospect of making new friends,gaining confidence in your abilities and opening upnew levels of your understanding. But of course thefirst few days can be a bit daunting too as you findyour feet in a new environment and learn thegeography of the campus and surrounding area. Wedo hope that you enjoy the experience of Freshers’Week. If you need advice, guidance or information,talk to the staff. They are there to help you settle inand they will be happy to listen.

This booklet has been designed forstudents starting in September 2011.

Programme InductionFor students starting their Programme in September your Faculty will organise yourFreshers’Week Programme, which is a series of activities to welcome you to the Universityand to introduce you to your academic life. Please see the enclosed Departmental Bookletfor further information. There will also be an opportunity to meet with your Tutors andto find out about the full range of support services and facilities available to you. It isimportant that you participate in all Freshers’ Week and Induction activities.

Admissions

Outstanding Offer ConditionsIf you have outstanding conditions to meet, please provide evidence to Admissions assoon as possible in order for your place to be confirmed. It is your responsibility toensure that you havemet all the necessary conditions of your offer and you will not be ableto complete enrolment until any outstanding conditions have been satisfied.

Please note:

• Applicantswhose status is unconditional onUCASTrackwill be able to enrol orpart-enrol• Applicants whose offer is still conditional will NOT be able to enrol and shouldcontact Admissions on 01695 650950 for further advice

• All Non Residential applicants are advised to check their status on UCAS Track onthemorning of the enrolment day and only attend the Enrolment Session if your offeris unconditional

• Residential applicants must attend the Enrolment Session on Welcome Sunday• Clearing applicants should carefully read instructions from Admissions and ensureyour UCAS application is referred to Edge Hill prior to enrolment

Important: youmust attend all Freshers’ Week activities in week one even if you are notable to enrol at your scheduled time.

Proof of QualificationsIf you have been asked for verification of your qualifications, please send copies of yourcertificates to Admissions.

Some Programmes in the Faculty have Medical and/or Criminal RecordsBureau clearance requirements. If these are listed as outstanding conditionsof your offer please read on.

Medical Clearance (Social Work applicants only)You cannot enrol without medical clearance. If you have not already done so, please sendyour completed declaration of health questionnaire to Admissions. This can be a lengthyprocess if your form has to be sent to Occupational Health for clearance so you should dothis as soon as possible.

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)You will not be able to enrol without CRB clearance. If you have not already done so,please send your completed CRB application form to Admissions as soon as possible. Ifyou have already received your CRB Enhanced Disclosure certificate, please keep it in asafe place and do not lose it. In the event that clearance is not through before the start dateof your first placement, we will discuss this with you and try to find a suitable solution.This may involve a deferred start date for your placement.

Programmes that require CRB clearance are – Coach Education, Dance, EducationalPsychology, PE&School Sport, Performance andHealth, SocialWork, SportsDevelopment,Sports Therapy.

Enrolment

To become amember of Edge Hill University and to activate your IT/library account, youmust complete the University Enrolment process, this will:

• Ensure that your records are correct on the University Student Record System• Allow you to confirm that you agree to abide by the University Rules and Regulations• Confirm your attendance which will release your student loan (Home students only)• Provide you with your ‘Unicard’ which is your University ID card• Issue your University account to access a range of resources and services to supportyou with your studies, including book loans, access to electronic resources both on andoff campus, access to student PCs and an Edge Hill University student e-mail account

The Enrolment Sessions are timetabled into slots, either allocated in alphabetical orderby surname or by Programme. You are required to enrol at a specified time slot and youmay arrive at anytime within your given slot, please see the Sessions Charts for details.You only need to attend one Enrolment Session, not both, for example if you areliving in University Halls of Residence you will attend Session 2 on Welcome Sunday 18September, you do not need to attend Session 1 on 15/16 September.

The enrolment process should take no longer than one hour to complete, youmust bringwith youONE form of Identification (ID) from the following list:

Important: Due to changes in UK legislation students/trainees who do nothold a UK Passport must present their Passport or UKBA issued BRP card asproof of ID and original copies of their valid visa. Travelling to your Enrolment Session

If you are attending Enrolment Sessions 1, 3 or 4 you are advised, where possible totravel to the University byPublic Transport. Parking isEXTREMELY LIMITED oncampus and you cannot be guaranteed a car parking space. It is important that you planyour journey in advance, travel information is available from:edgehill.ac.uk/sustainability/travel/journeyplanning.

A ‘Temporary Parking Permit’ valid for one day only, to cover your Enrolment Session isenclosed with your pack. Youmust display it on your dashboard as you enter the campusmain entrance and hand it in to one of our parking attendants. You will be directed to thenearest available space, if any are available. We must emphasise that POSSESSIONOF THE CAR PARKING PERMIT DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU A CARPARKING SPACE and we are not in a position to guarantee that parking spaces will beavailable. Moving into University Halls of Residence

If you will be staying in University Halls of Residence you should arrive onWelcomeSunday 18th September 2011. You should drive onto campus via the entrance on StHelens Road where you will be directed to a car park at the rear of the campus. You areadvised to arrive no more than 1 hour in advance of your allocated enrolment time.

Before you are issued with your accommodation keys you are required to:-

• Complete the University Enrolment process• Make arrangements to pay your hall fees in full or by instalments before your

arrivalonWelcomeSunday - you cando this online atedgehill.ac.uk/payments.(Please check our website for information about when this link will be available).

Please note: if you have set up a plan to pay by instalments, you will only need to payyour £150 damage deposit prior to arrival.

Once you have enrolled and collected your accommodation keys you can return to yourvehicle to be directed to the drop off zone closest to your residence. A limited supply oftrolleys will be available to assist you inmoving your belongings into your accommodation.You will then be required to move your vehicle out of the drop off zone to one of the carparks (on the edge of the campus) to allow other students to access the drop off zone.

You may be required to walk some distance from the drop off zone to the halls ofresidence. Belongings should therefore be transported to University in suitable containerse.g. crates and suitcases onwheels. If you have disabled access requirements please [email protected]

Car ParkingStudents living in University Halls of Residence are NOT permitted to keep a car oncampus. However, students who are required to attend placement as part of their studiesmay apply for a temporary permit for the duration of their placement. In such circumstancesthese students should contact their Programme Leader and ask them to email their nameand residence, together with their Programme details and placements dates, to the FMHelpdesk as authorisation.

Tuition Fees and Funding

Full Time UndergraduatesFull TimeUK and EU students are liable for£3375 Tuition Fees for 2011/12. If you havecompleted your funding application form you must bring a copy of your ‘University orCollege Payment Advice’ and all relevant documentation to your Enrolment Session.If you have not received your financial assessment by the time you come to enrol, youshould take it to Academic Registry in the Student Information Centre as soon as possible.You may be eligible to take out a Tuition Fee Loan up to nine months into yourprogramme, please contact Student Finance England on 0845 300 50 90 forfurther details.

Self funded StudentsIf you are paying your own Tuition Fees you must provide a letter at your EnrolmentSession to confirm that you take full responsibility for payment of all Tuition Fees relatedto your programme, it should state that you will pay them at Enrolment or the timesagreed with the University Finance Office. If you have not applied for a Tuition Fee Loan,or are not eligible for funding you will be invoiced and liable for payment of the fullTuition Fee by December 2011.

Payment Arrangements for Self-Funded StudentsTuition Fees must be either paid in full at the start of the academic year or by recurringcard payment in three instalments. Please contact the Tuition Fees Team for furtherinformation related to payments on01695 584792 or 584622 prior to the start of yourprogramme.

Maintenance Grants/Loan PaymentsFor eligible students/trainees Student Finance will pay your Student Loan andMaintenance Grant directly into your Bank Account 3 – 5 working days after youhave fully enrolled with the University irrespective of the date indicated on yourpayment schedule. Payments will not be made if Student Finance has notcompleted your financial assessment. If you need advice about applying forfunding please contact the Student Financial Advice Team in Student Services [email protected]

Edge Hill BursariesIf you qualify for the full Maintenance Grant and you have indicated that you haveconsented to share your information, you may receive a £500 Edge Hill Bursary. Thiswill be paid to you automatically in June 2012.

International StudentsGuidance on Tuition Fees and Funding for International students can be obtained fromthe Centre for International Education.

Travel and Car Parking

Withmore students than ever joining theUniversity, parking on campus isEXTREMELYLIMITED. It is important that you plan your journey in advance and where possible usePUBLIC TRANSPORT. Further information on reduced rates for public transport,cycling and car sharing visit edgehill.ac.uk/sustainability/travel and JourneyPlanning from edgehill.ac.uk/sustainability/travel/journeyplanning.

The University operates the ‘Edge Hill Link’ bus service between the campus andOrmskirk bus station every 15 minutes (a pathway from the bus station leads directly tothe train station) throughout the day, 8.00 am to 8.45 pm Monday to Friday, excludingBank Holidays and 8.00 am to 5.45 pm Saturday. The service is free on production ofyour ‘Unicard’.

Travel to the University:

Rail From Liverpool Central to Ormskirk station on Merseyrail’s Northern Line orPreston to Ormskirk station on Northern rail.National Rail Enquiries: 08457 484950 www.nationalrail.co.uk

Road: Via the M6 North and South, junction 26, then onto the M58, junction 3,taking the A570 towards Southport and Ormskirk. The campus can alsobe reached from Preston or Liverpool via the A59. Satellite Navigationaddress: 53.558622,-2.875178. Using our postcode in your sat nav mayresult in directions to our back entrance which is only open at certain times.If you wish to use the postcode it is L39 4QP but please check that the routebrings you via St Helens Road.

Car ParkingYOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO TRAVEL TO UNIVERSITY BY PUBLICTRANSPORT. Car Parking is extremely limited on campus. If you have explored alloptions and must travel by car you should be aware that:

• TheUniversity cannotguaranteeyouaparkingspace, even if youhaveaCarParkingPermit• During Freshers’ Week and in Term Time you can expect to find long queues of trafficfrom 8.00 am onwards and severe delays entering campus

• When the car park is full you will be asked to find safe alternative parking off campus• Parking in Ormskirk town centre is limited, it is mainly pay and display, please see

www.westlancsdc.gov.uk and click on the link for parking in Ormskirk, foralternative parking options

• The University is in a residential area and if you do not park legally and sensibly yourcar may be towed away by the police

Car Parking PermitsThe University operates a Car Parking Permit system and you will NOT be allowed topark on campus if you do not have a valid Permit. Council Tax CertificatesThe local council will normally need to see an Exemption Certificate confirming yourstudent status and programme of study. The University has entered into an agreementwith various Local Councils whereby it will not be necessary for students to supply theirlandlords with individual council tax certificates. Students will not normally be issuedwith individual Council Tax Exemption certificates.For information E: [email protected]
