MISSIONSt. Andrew’s, an independent college preparatory school dedicated to personalized student development, strives to develop engaged, well-rounded individuals by inspiring a passion for knowledge, a commitment to personal integrity and a deepened social consciousness within a supportive educational community.

GUIDING PRINCIPLESWe are committed to our ISLAND IDENTITY. A strong sense of community connects St. Andrew’s with students, parents, alumni, friends and supporters. We embrace our small school, intimate environment, and open campus on Wilmington Island.

We are committed to SUSTAINABILITY. Through understanding of and respect for our resources--both natural and technological--a dedication to the principles and practices of 21st century teacher and learning is evident in a relevant and engaging environment.

We are committed to GLOBAL COMPETENCY. A global mindedness permeates the lower, middle and upper schools with an International Baccalaureate curriculum serving as the foundation and model for educating the whole student as global citizens.

Step into any St. Andrew’s classroom, and you will nd teachers bringing home a global perspective through sharing information, using technology, offering challenges and facilitating discussions.

Whether studying a foreign language, the political system of a small country halfway across the planet or the impact of technology and industrialization on a delicate ecosystem, St. Andrew’s students are constantly being reminded of their place on our planet and prepared to meet the challenges of our quickly shrinking world.

This morning as a seventh grade class was discussing what it means to be a “Citizen of the World” with alumna Amy Gaylor Nedriga ’91, an Admission Rep from Yale University was meeting with Upper School students and recruiting them to be part of Yale’s efforts to position itself as a global university. Even in the Lower School, students were being reminded of their place in the world through their discussions with students from our sister school, Instituto de Educacion Activa, in Venezuela.

“Going global” is much more than a catch phrase or a trendy way to educate young people. We know that colleges and universities value a student who completes the International Baccalaureate program. We know that the rate of information exchange in the world is accelerating thanks to Facebook, Twitter, Skype and YouTube. We know that an international education prepares students to work and live with greater success and purpose in the global workplace.

An international perspective creates a world that is more vibrant, interesting and collaborative. In this edition of the Highlander, we are highlighting some of the many ways we are making St. Andrew’s a relevant participant in this global landscape. Check us out in print and nd us on Facebook or YouTube. Our students, alumni, parents and faculty are making a difference around this small, small globe.

Volunteering as a translator expanded my knowledge of the Spanish language. The experience afforded me the opportunity to truly interact

with the world. I was able to compare my personal experiences with those from Argentina, Spain and Mexico.

I get to go to Turkey every summer to see my family. The food is different, the water is very clear and beautiful and it is really hot.

It helps that I speak Turkish.LILA OZAYSIN ’22

Living in Africa is very different from living in America. I was on a mission trip with my parents for 3 months. They eat a lot of mushy bread called injera, but I don’t like it.

My grandfather, dad and I spent a little over a week in Paris and the food was amazing. We ate escargot and frog legs. We also did lots of walking. My French is

not so good but I can say, hello, good bye and where is the restroom.PIERCE JEMISON ’20

What does it mean to be a CITIZEN OF THE WORLD?After working with Children Inspiring Hope, we asked our Middle School students this question.

Here’s some of their answers.

I spent a month studying and working in a medical clinic in Peru with my mother and sister, Sophie ’20. I remember one afternoon sitting in the town square of Cuzco with my professor. We were having a political discussion, and I realized the conversation wasn’t nearly as important as our

ability to overcome communication barriers and cultural differences. LUKE EMMOTH ’14

An International Perspective A few ways some of our students went global this past summer.

You are part of the world as a person and a friend.

I’m part of a community outside of Savannah.

I have people thinking of me in Ghana.

Every day you are learning to be a better person.

It means you are connected with the world.

These words contain so much power. We are all stewards of the Earth

and should treat it as well as we can.

I’m helping in some way.

Everyone is the same in every way possible.

7th graders created a visual image that represented their idea of being a global citizen - the banners are on their way to Ghana

St. Andrew’s efforts to collect aluminum can pop tabs for Savannah’s Ronald McDonald House is going global this fall. Lt. Col. David Simons, the father of 5th grader Joseph Simons and 4th grader Audrey Simons, is currently serving with the International Security Assistance Force-Afghanistan located in Kabul, Afghanistan. Last semester, Audrey asked her parents to collect the tabs and the family started doing so. Because of location and equipment challenges, most of the drinks in the war zone are in aluminum cans and her father started collecting them in Afghanistan.

At rst I started collecting them myself. hen to make it a team event, I asked the people in the ISAF Media Operations Center to put them in a box dedicated to the St. Andrews School activity,” said Lt. Col. Simons.

German Army Lt. Col. Frank Holzner joined the activity and asked the German Army chaplain and they took up the challenge and collected the tabs at the German House at ISAF. his international foray will eventually end as Joseph and Audrey’s father is due back home at the end of the year.

In 1984 I graduated from St. Andrew’s with the aspiration of attaining a BBA in International Business from UGA, as well as living abroad while working for an international company. I accomplished the rst one in 1989 and the second one only in 2010. My message here – believe in dreams becoming reality!

During my 23 years at Coca-Cola Enterprises, I have had the privilege to meet interesting people, visit exciting locations and work for a brand that gives people a simple pleasure and big smile. his experience has taught me some important lessons about leadership that transcend cultural and geographic boundaries.

he business environment today changes rapidly – and most likely will continue to change. I nd it necessary to be adaptive and responsive to complex situations, while asking more questions

than I can answer. Change is constant in today’s world, and

true leaders don’t ‘deal with change,’ they embrace it.

It boils down to being authentic in everything you do, accepting opportunities with zeal, being open to new ideas and maintaining an optimistic outlook. As a Savannahian living in London, I can attest to the fact that it really is that simple. Come visit!

St. Andrew’s is embracing its identity as the region’s leader in global education through culture, curriculum, and compassion. Recognizing the importance of placing students in the context of an intimate, interconnected, and dynamic global community, educators are creating instructional activities and programs that engage and enthuse global competencies from Lower School to International Baccalaureate diplomas. With a population of international students from over a dozen different countries, sister school partnerships providing student and idea exchanges, and over 100 service groups or organizations supported by the intimate island school, learning is intentionally connected to global citizenship.

In an early presentation to start the school year, guest Grady Toland of the Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE) stated that schools with practices and evidence of 21st century teaching and learning are those that acknowledge education is no longer based on what you know, but instead how you knew it. We are preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist, majors that they will likely evolve and

self-design, and lives that we cannot fully envision with constantly evolving technology. The common denominator is change. Traditional and historical methods use rote learning such as factual memorization and input-output information exchange in the classroom setting to force content and later regurgitate facts in lengthy assessments. Children are drilled on the “what.” The knowledge is manufactured and static. Our changing world demands authentic and dynamic.

Focused on 21st century teaching and learning, the community of St. Andrew’s encourages students to ask “why” behind the facts. Instead of learners elevated by stair steps of grade levels to the next plateau of knowledge acquisition, experience is built upon the joy of challenge. Education is a journey rather than a destination, and every road, path, turn, and even pothole encourages use of creativity, communication, collaboration, critical-thinking and problem-solving, and even character to learn. Through application to ourselves, our community, and our planet, a child’s experience is measured by the skills they use to unlock their place in the world around them.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the “farm-to-table” concept explored in the curriculum of the

rst grade classroom. Our teachers have developed instruction around plants, food, and nature. Some of our youngest students are cultivating and managing the community garden where recent harvests of basil were used by Thrive, our green-certi ed food service, to prepare pesto sauce for the pasta. Global education begins with understanding how to engage and interact with the planet on which we live and survive.

St. Andrew’s is dedicated to fostering a community of learners of different cultures, ethnicities, origins, and backgrounds with a common dedication to a global identity. Join us on our journey as we Go Global!

We know that those closest to St. Andrew’s School are the best representatives for spreading good news. Here are some TALKING POINTS to share with others when you are out and about.

Talking Points

For more than fteen years, St. Andrew’s has maintained a close relationship with a Sister School in Valencia, Venezuela. Although it is from another country, el Instituto de Educación Activa (IDEA) shares many of our same values. The six students chosen to visit St. Andrew’s and attend classes each Fall are chosen based on traits held dear by both schools. Their behavior, academic achievement, involvement in the community as a whole, and skill in English are all key in determining which students will join us in our hallways. Some students, as Andrés Williams is right now, elect to join the St. Andrew’s community for even longer. He will be staying with us for the duration of the rst semester as many students have before him.

BIG APPLE

St. Andrew’s recently received the APPLE DISTINGUISHED AWARD for excellence. The criteria is based on

innovation, leadership and excellence in the classroom. We are one of 42 private schools nationwide to receive the honor for the 2012-13 school year.

We Are ST. ANDREW’S PROUD

We have a distinctive new entry to the Lower School campus. The welcoming, landscaped gateway includes three ags - St. Andrew’s, Georgia and American. And after some serious pruning, you can now see into the

verdant campus from Penn Waller. We are proud to be a part of this beautiful coastal island.IS
