Father Brown: The Empathetic DetectiveIn the wake of his 1903 retirement to beekeeping in Sussex Downs, devoted fans of Sherlock Holmes had to console themselves with would-be “rivals” of Th e Great Detective until 1910, when a strikingly diff erent and equally compelling literary sleuth appeared in the person of the inimitable Roman Catholic priest, Father Brown. Although both Holmes and Father Brown were supremely gifted reasoners, the similarity ended there. Sherlock Holmes combined his singular powers of observation and inductive logic with the methods of forensic science and his encyclopedic knowledge of criminal cases as he sought to bring lawbreakers to justice. Father Brown, however, was the very antithesis of the scientifi c detective, utilizing his extra-ordinary powers of intuition and commonsensical logic toward fathoming the vagaries of the human heart in wrongdoers. Please join us in reading selected tales of this utterly unique master of detection and refl ect on lessons learned for contemporary times. Our common text will be Father Brown, Th e Essential Tales ($12). Prior to our initial meeting, please read the “Biographical Note” and “Introduction,” as well as the fi rst story, “Th e Blue Cross.” Class limit of 30.Friday 10:45AM-12:15PM First Class: September 16Instructor: Howard Jacobs Fee: $12/$15NR (8 Sessions)

The First World War

In this course, we shall examine the causes, course, and consequences of the original catastrophe of twentieth century Europe, the Great War of 1914-1918. Contemporaries and succeeding generations have recognized that this global confl ict unleashed a succession of further disastrous developments: revolution, civil war, the rise of Fascism and Communism, and genocidal confl ict. Th e war transformed politics, society, and culture in Europe and all around the globe, and we continue to experience its long-term eff ects in our own time.

History Meets Natural History in Connecticut: Ice ages to invasive species

We are newcomers here. Modern humans fi rst appeared in Africa 250,000 years ago and have only lived in the Americas for the past 15,000 years or so. Since the invention of agriculture, we have had a profound eff ect on our environment. In New England this began with the arrival of the fi rst Native Americans and continues to the present day. Th is three-part lecture series will broadly discuss the eff ects of humans on the environment since the end of the last ice age. We will focus on Connecticut, by way of three specifi c stories. One will be the role of humans in the extinction of large mammals (such as mammoths). Second, will be the construction and ecology of stone walls by European colonists. Th ird, will be a focus on the accidental importation by humans of organisms which become pests.Th ursday 7:00-8:30PM First Class: September 15Instructor: Dr. Mitch Wagener Fee: $25/$30NR (3 Sessions)

Write Your Own Story: Memoir and Life Narrative“Memoir isn’t the summary of a life; it’s a window into a life, very much like a photograph in its selective composition. It may look like a casual and even random calling up of bygone events. It’s not; it’s a deliberate construction.” William Zinsser, in On Writing Well.Th is three-week workshop course will focus on memoir writing. Each class session will be divided into a discussion portion and writing workshop. Our discussion will begin with the memoir form, as distinct from autobiography. Participants will work in groups to identify their own important “memory snapshots,” begin planning their writing, and move on to draft their story during the week. In the second class, we will discuss narratives and grand narratives: how we shape and are shaped by our personal and family stories, and then workshop our story drafts. In the fi nal week, we will continue to workshop these narratives, followed by sharing our stories and planning for future writing.Th ursday 7:00-8:30PM First Class: November 3Instructor: Dr. Kelli Custer Fee: $25/$30NR (3 Sessions)

Art ProgramDrawing: I Can Draw

Th is is a basic drawing class for beginning artists, artists who haven’t had pencil in hand for years, or artists who have always wanted to take a crack at drawing. Martha believes we’re all artists and has created the class as a series of exercises designed to experience drawing as a skill-set and to teach students how to really see. Th e emphasis is on process far more than product. (We’re not going to the Louvre to hang our art, folks, but you’ll likely be delighted with the process.)Tuesday 12:30 -2:30PM First class: September 13Instructor: Martha Talburt Fee: $40/$48NR (10 Sessions)

Beginning PortraitureIn this class, Martha builds a bridge from basic drawing skills to the more specifi c art of drawing portraits.
