Sexual health education is something that has been on our radar at Lifetime Networks for a long time. That is why we are so excited to be launching two new program offerings: Healthy Relationships and Healthy Sexuality! These programs aim to provide adults with diversabilities a chance to engage in discussions around their bodies, their sexuality, and their relationships in a supportive learning environment. Earlier this year, we ran a small pilot program to gain insight about how to best offer these programs in an accessible format. From what we learned, we have come up with two distinct program offerings. Our Healthy Relationships program will run in a classroom format from September until June. Individuals will be immersed in the subject matter once a week for three hour sessions, learning and practicing skills together. It will cover topics such as friendship, romantic relationships, communication skills, boundaries, consent and much more. Our Healthy Sexuality program will take a similar format to our sessional programs, running from September to December for a total of 12 classes. These classes will include learning about our bodies, sexual feelings and behaviours, safer sex, consent and decision making. Both programs are available in two levels to accommodate learning styles and levels of familiarity with the course content. Inclusion of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations is fully integrated throughout the course material. Both programs can be paid for privately or with CLBC funding.

It will cover topics such as friendship, romantic relationships, communication skills, boundaries, consentand much more.

Please contact us for more information or to register.

The Citizen Team enjoyed yet another fun and adventure filled summer together this year!

Our annual camping trip has become a long anticipated event, and this year was no different. Two nights of camping is an exciting way to bring people together. We experienced a dry and warm time this year. During the fun, our friends from Inclusion Works! were able to join in visiting us at the Goldstream campsite.

Summertime also included visits to local hot spots such as, the Robert Bateman Center where we viewed some phenomenal art pieces.

We even found time to create

Being a Citizen

PODS - People Out Doing Stuff! This Summer, the POD squad has been out in full force! For those of you who have not heard of PODS, they are small groups of individuals who meet at Lifetime Networks and head out into the community with our wonderful staff to focus on making friends, exploring Victoria and having some fun. So far, the groups have enjoyed many beach days, swimming, geocaching, visits to the museum, bowling and even a Harbour Ferry tour!

Throughout the year, PODS operates on Pro-D days, Winter break, and Spring Break. We will also have some individual PODS running yearlong.

Each PODS group is created based on shared interests, shared goals, the area that participants live in and/or on existing relationships. The possibilities are endless!

If you are interested in the PODS program, please contact us for more information! [email protected]

some of our own art pieces, enjoy BBQ’s at Mt. Doug Park and tour the local landfill at Hartland. The landfill education center gave us tips to promote reducing, reusing and recycling and the group was given a tour of the property on a large school bus.

Another unique opportunity that arose this summer was a tour of CHEK6 News. Be sure to visit our website to catch the link and watch some of our crew live in the CHEK6 studio! LifetimeNetworks.org/about-us/in-the-news/Summer offers staff and participants a time to stretch our legs, rest our minds and take in our amazing local surroundings.

Clothes Drop

The Networks Program was fortunate to have beautiful sunny weather for this year’s Ice Cream Social held in Rutledge Park on June 24th. About 50 people from our 37 networks were able to attend and connect with each other for this fun and casual event.

We are always looking for more people to start a Network, work as a Facilitator or volunteer as a Network Friend.

If you are interested in learning more, please contact Heather Bergink at [email protected].

This September marks one full year in operation for the Clothes Drop program. What a year it has been! We have managed to divert over 85,000 pounds of used clothing and household goods from entering the landfill. This translates into roughly $35,000 dollars raised! We currently have three part time clothes drop employees – two of whom have diversabilities and were hired through our employment program.

Help us make our second year of Clothes Drop even better than the first! Go to www.clothesdrop.org to find a donation bin near you. Can’t make it to a bin? Give us a call to arrange a home pick-up.

Thank you to everyone who has donated and helped make this program a success!

This year has been fantastic for IW! Some big highlights include: a daytrip to Qualicum Beach, a daytrip to Ganges on Salt spring Island, and breaking ground on a community garden project in Colwood. This year, the participants have been focusing on developing ‘hard skills’ such as cooking, general maintenance, and repair. The IW! participants have also continued to develop positive bonds with others involved in Lifetime Networks. We look forward to continuing to foster and develop these relationships along with creating new memories and adventures!

Inclusion Works!Thank you

to all the family and friends who have donated to Lifetime Networks in memory of a loved

one that has passed.

All monies donated are added to the Pieter Van

Rheenen Scholarship fund.

To make a donation or to inquire about leaving a

legacy gift, please contact Carlene at 250 477 4112

Lifetime Networks’ Self-Advocacy group, Ambassadors, is seeking applications for new members!

The Ambassadors meet the first Thursday of each month from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm to discuss issues of importance to people with diversabilities and to make plans for taking action.

Members of the Ambassadors group currently participate on BC Transit’s Accessibility Committee and in roundtable dis-cussions throughout Victoria.

To learn more or to apply, please contact [email protected] or [email protected]

Our returning Title Sponsors; Max Furniture and Wilson’s Transportation Group along with our returning Dinner Sponsor Country Grocer, contributed to a terrific evening where fun was had by all!

This year we experienced an entertaining twist when Lifetime Networks’ Theatre Troupe and Cam Culham performed a few original songs and a special poem that had guest laughing from beginning to end. Emcee Stephen Andrew and a guest appearance by Al Hasham of Maximum

Express encouraged some spirited bidding on our live auction items followed by a competitive game of Deal or No Deal for the grand finale. Within the Deal or No Deal Stephen tried desperately to get

the final participant to trade boxes but in the end, she went away with 1000 grains of coffee and $1000.00 remained with Lifetime Networks!

We would like to thank our other returning sponsors, 1550’s Pub Style Restaurant,Maximum Express Courier, Hot House Marketing, Inclusion BC, Urban Signs, Vancouver Island

Almost Free Magazine, LA Limousine, Collins Barrow, GT Hiring Solutions, Magicuts, University of Victoria Social Sciences, Iron Bell Fitness, Catherine Knight – Invis, Razzle B Photography, Smart

Dolphins IT, Flaman Fitness, and returning Honorary Chair Tammy Hatter from Royal Lepage. A special thank you too to our new additions; fellow Think Local members, Island West Produce,

The Malahat Group, West End Gallery, Elite Promotions and Royal Roads University who joined us for the first time this year!

With the help of our community over 100 businesses donated, 190 guests attended and we were able to raise over $65,000.00 from the Auction this year!

These dollars will make a BIG difference to many families in Victoria. From the Bottom of our hearts, we THANK YOU for being a part of our special evening.

Our 15th Annual Gala & Auction was another BIG success!

Best Buddies

The LNV Employment Program supports participants in pursuit of their workplace goals. One of our participants, Melissa exemplifies the evolution in employment goals that can occur over a single year.

In 2017, Melissa wanted to move on from her janitorial job due to a lack of shifts. With the support of the Employment Program, she secured two 2-hour shifts per week at JJ Morgans Restaurant and the UVIC cafeteria. Gaining more skills, she was able to take on longer shifts and greater responsibility. In May 2018, Melissa fulfilled her revised employment goal by attaining a second job as a dishwasher at the Government House Tea House. For the duration of the summer, Melissa has worked over 20 hours a week, and is loving it. In recognition of her stellar work, Melissa has been offered a year-round position with Government House. Melissa’s confidence, professionalism, and workplace skills have skyrocketed - and all in a year! Congratulations to Melissa, and the many employment program participants who have achieved their own workplace milestones!

Employment Spotlight

If you are interested in learning more about how the LNV employment program can help you achieve your work related goals, please contact Program Coordinator Lyndsey Wheat at [email protected]

If we want to get a visual representation of how Best Buddies was for our people last year, look no further than the photos of the St. Patrick’s themed Karaoke night! It was a blast! That night, it was tough for anybody to resist the itch to sing and dance to all their favorite songs and with all their favorite people. Everyone was also treated to some delicious sundaes that came with all of their favorite St. Patty’s themed toppings! It was the fantastic wrap up event to yet another fantastic year of Best Buddies.

In addition to March’s Karaoke night, Best Buddies hosted a movie night at the Cinecenta, a hockey game with the Victoria Royals, and for the first time ever, an inclusive yoga class for the new year! The Best Buddies team is proud to have met their goal of creating lasting friendships and promoting healthy lifestyles.

We expect the same level of excitement to return to the program for this upcoming school year! Registrations are open until October and expect the first meet-and-greet event to come shortly after. We encourage you all to take part in it this year, for new and returning Buddies and volunteers are all welcome! Come for the fun, stay for the friendships!
