Enrichment Program Fall 2019 Johnson Campus Welcome to Enrichment Activities! SCHEDULE Enrichment Activities for Fall will meet for eleven weeks beginning Monday, September 16th, through Friday, December 13th. Prices are based accordingly, and also account for planned school holidays that lead to days without activities. Homework Centers will run all school year, September 16th through May 22nd. No Homework Centers: September 19-20, October 14th- 18th, November 22-29th and during LEAP tests. Make up sessions will be held December 16th-20th for weather related cancellations or instructor absences when a substitute is not available. When rainy day carpool occurs, activities will begin immediately after carpool ends and conclude at their normal time. A make-up session will be offered if rainy day carpool ends at 4:30 PM or later. For homework centers, instructors are asked to find a substitute and make ups will not be scheduled.

Johnson Campus   Welcome to Enrichment Activities!    SCHEDULE  

Enrichment Activities for Fall will meet for eleven weeks beginning Monday,  September 16th, through Friday, December 13th. Prices are based accordingly, and also  account for planned school holidays that lead to days without activities.  

Homework Centers will run all school year, September 16th through May 22nd. No  Homework Centers: September 19-20, October 14th- 18th, November 22-29th and during  LEAP tests.

REGISTRATION DETAILS   

All registration (except for external providers*) will occur online through the Camp Brain  system at lfno.campbrainregistration.com. Parents without computer access should contact Ted  Orphan, the Enrichment Site Manager at Johnson for assistance at (504) 620–5500 ext. 1713, or  [email protected]  

There will be two rounds of registration. The first round of registration will be open from  Saturday, September 7th at 10:00AM to Tuesday, September 10th at 11:59PM . The first round of  registration will limit enrollment to one activity and one homework center per child. The second  round of registration will be open from Wednesday, September 11th, at 6:30 PM to Thursday,  September 12th, at 11:59PM . The second round will open any remaining space to families who wish  to enroll students in additional activities or homework centers.  

Minimums and Maximums: There is a registration minimum of six students to hold an activity and a  maximum of ten – fifteen students depending on grade levels served and the subject. For homework  centers, there is a registration minimum of three students and a maximum of seven.

  Note for Parents of THIRD GRADERS:  While your child’s class attends the Thinking Outside the Classroom Zoo program, you must  

arrange transportation to Johnson from the zoo in order for your child to attend Enrichment. We  unfortunately cannot adjust prices if your child misses Enrichment during their Thinking Outside the  Classroom experience. We will reach out before your child's month at the Zoo if you enroll your third  grader in a Homework Center so we can ensure continued access during Thinking Outside the  Classroom.  

FEES   

All fees must be paid in full at sign-up and are non-refundable once the class begins unless  the class is cancelled by LFNO and not replaced. Families with any LFNO outstanding balances in  any department will not be able to register their students for Enrichment until the balance is  paid or they have set up a payment plan with the Business Office. Families that qualify for  income-based discounts may request a payment plan for Enrichment fees through the Business  Office.  

Note: Any changes to registrations will be charged a $10 admin fee.  

Free Lunch Discount*: children qualifying for FREE LUNCH receive an 80% discount on one  activity and one homework center. Reduced Lunch Discount*: children qualifying for REDUCED  LUNCH receive a 50% discount on one activity and one homework center. To receive an  income-based discount, a Free and Reduced Lunch Form must have been received and processed by  August 31, 2019. All forms are subject to audit by the State of Louisiana.   

After Care Discount*: Children signed up for unlimited After Care by August 31, 2019 receive a  $25 discount off one activity and a $25 discount off of one homework center. To receive the aftercare

discount, students must be signed up for the unlimited AfterCare plan during the months of  September – November by August 31, 2018.  

* Discounts cannot be combined. Discount codes will be provided via email to enter during registration.      PRICE LIST

HOMEWORK CENTERS    Homework Centers run all year, September 16, 2019-May 15, 2020.    No Homework Centers: December 19-20th, 2018; January 8-9th 2019; February 27th, 2019 and LEAP  testing dates (TBD by Academic Department).  

 French Homework Center – FR  Students will be provided with help and guidance to complete homework                      assignments in a small group setting.*   Homework Centers run all year, September 16, 2018 - May 22, 2019.     Instructor: LFNO Staff Members / Substitutes   

Grades: 3-8    When: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 4:00-5:00 PM     

English Homework Center – EN  Students will be provided with help and guidance to complete homework  assignments in a small group setting.*  Homework Centers run all year, September 16, 2018 - May 22, 2019.      Instructor: LFNO Staff  Grades: 3 - 8 When: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00-5:00 PM

EDUCATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS    Electric Girls- EN  

Electric Girls develops girls into confident leaders through technology. Girls will use tools to design and build inventions, solder circuits, and learn the fundamentals of electricity, electronics, and coding. Girls will also develop social emotional skills like personal mindset, future planning, collaboration, and problem solving. Electric Girls is perfect for creative and curious girls looking to harness new skills and become leaders.

MAD SCIENCE - EN  The mission of Mad Science of Southeast Louisiana is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children through fun, hands-on science programs that instill a clear understanding of what science is really about and how it affects the world around them. Mad Science makes learning fun! Children will learn how to explore, question and test their theories. Through unique experiments and dazzling demonstrations we hope to inspire young people to explore the world around them, and possibly pursue careers in technology, science or engineering.  Instructor: Neikisha McGill  

Grades: 3 - 5 When: Wednesdays 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.    

 ¡ Vamonos NOLA!  You know that as bilingual learners, Lycee  students already have a leg up on learning a third  language. Their brains are more malleable and are  prime to incorporate Spanish at this stage! But that is  not why THEY want to come to Vamonos NOLA! Kids  report having a BLAST with different themes like  

Innovation, Theater, Super Heroes, Science  Experiments and Cooking!

MOVEMENT   

  Yoga – EN   Each week Yoga will have a new theme to explore through breathing exercises,                          chanting, lots of creative and fun movements such as flowing sequences,                      balancing and partner poses as well as relaxation techniques. Every class will                        begin with a seated exercise, move into standing poses and end with savasana,                          a quiet relaxation and meditation while lying down.   

Yoga helps kids remain present in the moment, reduces stress, improves ability to focus, builds strength and                                  flexibility, and helps them gain a deeper sense of body awareness and peace within themselves. Students will                                  practice with a certified Next Generation Yoga Children's Yoga Teacher.

Grades: 3-5 _ When: Thursdays 4:00 - 5:00p.m.      

 Capoeira - EN  Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial arts that incorporates elements of  dance, acrobatics, and music. Through training movements of  capoeira, students will get stronger and see improvements in flexibility,  agility, balance, and courage. Students of capoeira also learn to sing  short songs in Portuguese and play some of the traditional hand-made  instruments of Brazilian music. Kick, jump, run, spin, headstand,  handstand and flip your way into the fun-filled world of Capoeira!  

 Instructor: Ana Maria Gaviria  Grades: 3-5 When: Wednesdays 3:00pm-4:00pm     

Music  Private Piano Lessons   Parents interested in private piano lessons at $40 per session must email Pascal Valcasara at [email protected] who will then send appropriate forms that must be filled out and returned to Ted Orphan Site Manager at Johnson via [email protected]

Art Club - EN  Students will be exploring arts and crafts using common materials in creative ways. Students will complete a variety of projects in different visual arts mediums, to be presented to parents at the end of the activity.  Instructor: Sierra Orlowski  Grades: 3 - 5 When: Tuesdays 4:00 -  5:00  

 

  Chess EN - FR  LFNO’s Chess enrichment activity is made possible by a partnership between Discovery Fest and the New Orleans Historic Collection. The Collection’s Education Specialist Kendric Perkins will be teaching students about chess legend and New Orleans native Paul Morphy, as well as continuing to help advance LFNO’s

chess team from a competitive perspective in tournaments and competitions. Students will be engaging with historical documents related to Morphy, written in French as well as in English. Instructor: Kendric Perkins (Historic New Orleans Collection-DF*)   Grades: 3 - 4 When: Mondays 4:00 - 5:00  Grades: 5 - 8 Thursdays 4:00 - 5:00   

 Costume Making - EN  Over the course, students will explore different aspects of DIY costuming. We will make masks, pain on clothing, and explore holistic costume creation. The ultimate goal of the course is to have students find agency in a creative process centered around mixed-media art, play, and outward projection of self-image.

Improv - EN This class uses the tenets of improv like agreement,  listening, and emotions to teach students basic life skills. It gets them  out of their heads and active while showing them new ways they can  work with and learn from others. The games and exercises develop  emotional intelligence. The focus here is put on physical expression as  well as verbal communication. Students will be led through some basic  

improv exercises and games. These are meant to be fun and focus on communication and  teamwork. Students will work on being a good ensemble member as well as developing their  individual skills in a low-pressure environment.  Instructer: TBA
