FAMILY ENCOURAGER "Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. -Jesus” (John 4:35, ESV)
December 11-17, 2017
Weber Road Church of Christ Sharing God’s Word with
Corpus Christi & the World
AN END AND A BEGINNING
2017 is almost gone! Another year of opportunities we have either taken advantage of or wasted. Twelve months of choices, joys, struggles, worries, and prayers. 365 days of being able to shine our lights in a world darkened by sin (Mt 5, Jn 3). How have you fared? For a private exercise, try sitting down and listing on a piece of paper all the things you did or attempted to do for the Lord in 2017. Do you need more than one sheet of paper?
Just as one year is closing, another year is beginning! My hope is that you are excited as a Christian for the possibilities that God will put in your pathway of life.
The year of 2018 will be an active one for the Weber Road church of Christ. Our Bible classes are a major source of encouragement and Bible learning for the youngest of children to those who have experienced many years of life. Our worship assemblies seek to please God and to place Him first at the start of each week. We will have extra opportunities to share with our church family in fellowships, service projects, special studies, youth activities, and much more! Please keep informed by viewing our weekly “Family Encourager, weekly Sunday Special Edition, website, and our Facebook page.
As preacher, I plan to preach through several series which will include, “Do You Know God’s Power?” (Book of Joshua); “Look! The Fields are White for Harvest!” (Evangelism—Sunday PM series); “Strengthening the Family;” “Authentic Christianity” (1 Timothy—Summer); “Faces Surrounding the Cross.” I hope you will look forward to our continued study from God’s Word during these series and for other sermons delivered throughout the year!
Every member of the Weber Road church of Christ is encouraged to participate in worship, Bible studies, various activities and bringing others to Christ. Will you dedicate yourself to prayer, faithfulness, study of God’s Word, and inviting others to know more about your faith? Let’s plan for a great year and then work to make it great!

Hello to all,
Thank you very much for the Bible that you sent to
me. The congregation at Weber Road will always be
in my heart and prayers. Laura Graham
I took my son to school this morning, as I do every weekday, and we went through at least four school zones. We’ve all seen them with signs, flashing lights, and police cars looking for those who don’t slow down. The reason for a school zone is to keep our children safe as they cross the street. The whole idea in a school zone is for the motorist to slow down and pay attention to what is going on around their vehicle. I’m sure these zones have saved many lives throughout our country.
Isn’t that a great concept for our spiritual lives? Do you slow down and allow your mind to take in this wonderful world and the
blessings of life? When is the last time you just stopped whatever you were doing and opened God’s Word to read or paused for a moment of prayer to God? Every Sunday when Christians are assembled to worship, do you slow down in life to praise God and remember the sacrifice of His Son on the cross of Calvary?
The scriptures give many examples of those who slowed down to remember God. Consider the times Jesus spent praying to the Father, although we can be sure his daily schedule was very busy. Just before His arrest, the Gospel of John records the prayer of Jesus for Himself, His disciples, and for all believers. He started this prayer in John 17:1, "Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You.’" Jesus’ often made time to slow down and speak to His Father. If Jesus saw this as being important, should we also place importance on prayer?
One important reason to worship God regularly is so that we won’t forget how great He is. We find these words in Psalm 46:10, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" As you worship God each Lord’s Day, slow down and reflect on His love for you. Don’t slow down only on Sundays because each day we can also look around to see how great this world really is. "The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork" (Psalms 19:1). So often, as we speed down life’s road and miss the true beauty of life. Slow down, look around, and recognize God’s handiwork.
The next time you are on the road and see those flashing lights of a school zone, be reminded of how important it is to slow down spiritually. Remember to come worship God with brothers and sisters in Christ each Sunday. Also, take time to look around this world and be thankful for God’s beautiful creation.
"I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well." (Psalms 139:14) (Article reprinted from 2010)
