o JudahwasonthevergeofbeingdestroyedandexiledtoBabylonifitdidn’tturnfromitsunfaithfulness.Beforejudgmentanddestructioncametothenation,Jeremiahgaveacollectionofpropheciesknownas“TheBookofConsolation”(Jeremiah30‐33),whichofferedhopeindesperatetimes.TheseprophecieslookedbeyondJudah’simminentcollapseandlookedtowardthedaywhenGodwouldrestorethenation(chapter30),makeanewcovenantwithIsrael(chapter31),bringIsraelbacktothePromisedLand(chapter32),andhonortheDavidiccovenant(chapter33).

o ReadJeremiah33:1‐5Thebeginningversesofchapter33focusonthecomingjudgmentagainstJudahintheformofaBabyloniansiege.Theseversesmakeitclearthatdestructionwasinevitable.GodannouncedthatJerusalem’sfeebleattemptstoshoreupherdefenseswereuseless.GodwouldhideHisfacefromthecity,refusingtodeliveritfromthisdestruction.Jerusalemhadtobedestroyedbecauseofallitswickedness.

o ReadJeremiah33:6‐13AfterthetimeofjudgmentGodwillsomedaybringhealthandhealingtoHiscityandpeople.GodspoketoJeremiahaboutthreeelementsofthisblessing.First,GodwillbringbothJudahandIsraelbackfromcaptivitytotheirland.Second,Godwillcleansethepeoplefromalltheirsinandforgivethemoftheirrebellion.Third,Jerusalemwillbringjoy,praise,andhonortoGodbeforeallnations.ThosenationswillbeinaweandwilltrembleastheymarvelattheabundantprosperityandpeaceGodwilllavishonHispeople.

o ReadJeremiah33:14‐26Atthetime,JerusalemwasonthevergeofbeingcompletelydestroyedbytheBabylonians.ThisissignificantbecauseitmeantanendtotheDavidiclineonthethroneofIsrael,alongwithanendtothesacrificialsystemandLeviticalpriesthood.Theentirehopeofthenationwasonthebrinkofcrumbling,nottomentionGod’sintegrityandwordisatstake.YearsearlierHehadmadeacovenantwiththeLevitesthattheywouldalwayshaveapriesttostandbeforeHimtoofferburntofferingsandsacrifices.HepromisedDavidthathewouldalwayshaveadescendantsitonIsrael’sthrone.WasGodtruetoHispromises?OrdidGod’swordfail?UltimatelybothofGod’scovenantalpromiseswerefulfilledinthe“righteousBranch”,thepersonofJesusChrist.Heisbothkingandpriest.InChrist,God’scovenantwithDavidandLeviwillendureforever.ItisbecauseofthecomingChristthatthepeoplecanhavehopeeveninthemidstofcomingdestruction.

TheBottomLine:InJesus,God’spromisesaresure.

These suggestionswere created by the age‐groupministry leaders as away to help parents better communicate thebiblical truths discussed in the Family Worship Guide. These activities and questions can replace or serve as asupplementtothequestionsunderthe“Read”sectiononPage1.RememberthatthesesuggestionsareintendedtohelpparentsfacilitateGod‐centereddiscussionswiththeirchildren.Parentsshouldprayerfullyusethesesuggestions,andanyothermeansnecessary,tohelptheirchildrendiscoverthetruthsofGod’swordandworshipHimtogether.

Preschool(Birth‐Kindergarten)o Startbyaskingyourpreschooleriftheyknowwhatapromiseis.Explainthatapromiseisgivingyourwordthat

somethingwillbedone.Itiskeepingyourword.IfIpromiseyouthatwearegoingtogototheparkandplaytoday,andItakeyoutoplayinthepark,thenIamkeepingthepromisethatImadetoyou.

o Ask,whatifIpromisedyouthatIamgoingtotakeyoutotheparktodaytoplay,butlaterIdecidednottodosoinstead?Wedidn’tgettogotothepark,eventhoughIhadpromisedyouthatwewould.IwantedtokeepmypromisetoyoubutIdidn’t.Wouldthatmakeyousad?Yes,itwould.

o DoyouknowthatthereissomeonewhoalwayskeepsHispromises?GodalwayskeepsHispromises!GodmadeapromisetoHispeoplethatHewouldblessthemandprovidethemwithatrueandperfectleader.HekeptthatpromisewhenHesentHisson,Jesus.JesuscamefromHeaventoearthtoshowGod’sperfectplanforus.Evenwhenpeopledon’tdeserveitandmakebadchoices,GodstillprovidesawayforusthroughJesus.EvenwhenitseemsthatGodisnotwithus,Hisperfectplanisthere.WithJesus,God’spromisesarealwaystrue.Godkeepshispromises.

Children(Grades1‐5)

o Walkwithyourchildtoanearbylightswitchthatcontrolsaprominentlightintheroom.Askthemtomovethelightswitchtothe“off”position.Askthemwhatjusthappened(thelightturnedoff).Nowdirectthemtomovetheswitchtothe“on”position.Again,askthemtodescribewhattheysawhappen(thelightturnedon).Explainthatthelightswitchtheyjustmovedwillcontrolthelighteverytimeunlessthebulbisburnedoutorthepowerisoutforthewholehouse.It’saprettysurething.Whensomethingissure,thatmeansthatyoucancountonit.ExplaintoyourchildthatGod’spromisesarealwayssure.Theyarefarmorereliablethanthelightcomingon.Thepowercangooutinthehouse,andlightbulbscanburnout,butGod’spromiseswillstandoverandoverandoverandwillnevereverfail.

o InJeremiah33God’speoplefacedcertaindestruction.ThewickedandpowerfulBabylonianarmywouldsooncomeanddestroythecityofJerusalemandtakethepeopleawaytoanotherlandbecauseofthepeople’ssin,justasGodpromised.ThiswasaverysadandscarytimeforGod’speople.ButGodpromisedthemthatHewouldrestorethemtothelandHehadgiventhem,andwipeawayallthesinstheyhadcommittedagainstHim.GodpromisedthatHispeoplewouldalwayshaveaKingandaPriesttostandintheirplace.ThispromisewasfulfilledwhenJesuswasbornontheearthandlaiddownHislifeforthesinsoftheworld.God’spromisesarealwayssure,andwecanalwayscountonthem.
