Before judgment and destruction came to the nation, Jeremiah gave a collection of prophecies known as “The Book of Consolation” (Jeremiah 30‐33), which offered hope in desperate times. These prophecies looked beyond Judah’s imminent collapse and looked toward the day when God would restore the nation (chapter 30), make a new covenant with Israel (chapter 31), bring Israel back to the Promised Land (chapter 32), and honor the Davidic covenant (chapter 33). o Read Jeremiah 33:1‐5 The beginning verses of chapter 33 focus on the coming judgment against Judah in the form of a Babylonian siege. These verses make it clear that destruction was inevitable. God announced that Jerusalem’s feeble attempts to shore up her defenses were useless. God would hide His face from the city, refusing to deliver it from this destruction. Jerusalem had to be destroyed because of all its wickedness. o Read Jeremiah 33:6‐13 After the time of judgment God will someday bring health and healing to His city and people. God spoke to Jeremiah about three elements of this blessing. First, God will bring both Judah and Israel back from captivity to their land. Second, God will cleanse the people from all their sin and forgive them of their rebellion. Third, Jerusalem will bring joy, praise, and honor to God before all nations. Those nations will be in awe and will tremble as they marvel at the abundant prosperity and peace God will lavish on His people. o Read Jeremiah 33:14‐26 At the time, Jerusalem was on the verge of being completely destroyed by the Babylonians. This is significant because it meant an end to the Davidic line on the throne of Israel, along with an end to the sacrificial system and Levitical priesthood. The entire hope of the nation was on the brink of crumbling, not to mention God’s integrity and word is at stake. Years earlier He had made a covenant with the Levites that they would always have a priest to stand before Him to offer burnt offerings and sacrifices. He promised David that he would always have a descendant sit on Israel’s throne. Was God true to His promises? Or did God’s word fail? Ultimately both of God’s covenantal promises were fulfilled in the “righteous Branch”, the person of Jesus Christ. He is both king and priest. In Christ, God’s covenant with David and Levi will endure forever. It is because of the coming Christ that the people can have hope even in the midst of coming destruction. The Bottom Line: In Jesus, God’s promises are sure. Questions: What attributes of God are clearly seen in the first five verses of the chapter? According to verse nine what is God’s reason for restoring the fortunes of Judah and Israel? How was God able to keep His covenant with David and Levi even though Jerusalem was on the brink of destruction? PRAY o Read Window on the World, pg. 44‐45 Dai Lu (Myanmar) o Use Prayer Card SING o Use lyric sheet and mp3 download of “To God Be The Glory” o In light of Jeremiah 33, and God’s promise to restore Israel, we chose the hymn “To God be the Glory” for this week. In Jeremiah we see that God assures His chosen nation of how He will “restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them.” (33:26) We know that the ultimate fulfillment of this prophecy is found in Jesus Christ, and “To God be the Glory” gives us an opportunity to reflect upon the work of our Messiah. It is a song that we sing to each other, reminding one another of the Gospel of Christ and encouraging one another to give God glory for His sovereignty and love in our lives. MEMORIZE o Jeremiah 31:33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
