  • 1 Concepts1.1 What Is Cloud Eye?

Cloud Eye is a multi-dimensional monitoring platform. You can use Cloud Eye tomonitor the utilization of service resources, track the running status of cloudservices, configure alarm rules and notifications, and quickly respond to resourcechanges.

1.2 What Alarm Status Does Cloud Eye Support?Cloud Eye supports three alarm status: Alarm, OK, and Insufficient data.

    ● If an alarm rule is disabled, its alarm status is considered as invalid, andDisabled is displayed.

    ● Insufficient data indicates that no monitoring data is reported for threeconsecutive hours because the corresponding service instance is deleted or theinstance status is abnormal.

    ● Alarm indicates that the monitoring data meets the preset alarm policy.● OK indicates that the monitoring data is reported normally and does not

    meet the preset alarm policy.

1.3 Which Alarm Severities Are Supported by CloudEye?

Alarm severities are classified into four levels: critical, major, minor, andinformational. You can set alarm severities of alarm rules as required.

    ● Critical: An emergency fault occurs in the resource corresponding to thealarm rule and services are affected.

    ● Major: A relatively serious problem that affects services occurs in the resourcecorresponding to the alarm rule and may hinder the normal use of theresource.

    Cloud EyeFAQs 1 Concepts

Issue 01 (2020-03-17) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 1

  • ● Minor: A less serious problem occurs in the resource corresponding to thealarm rule and will not hinder the normal use of the resource.

    ● Informational: A potential error exists in the resources corresponding to thealarm rule and may affect the services.

1.4 What Is Rollup?Rollup is the process in which Cloud Eye calculates sample raw data collected indifferent periods by using different rollup methods, including Avg., Max., Min.,Sum, and Variance. The calculation period is called rollup period.

Rollup is a smooth calculation process. The longer the rollup interval, the moresmoothly processing will be implemented, and the more accurate these generateddata will reflect the real situation. However, the shorter the rollup interval is, themore effective alarm reporting will be.

The rollup period can be 5 minutes, 20 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, or 1 day.

The methods Cloud Eye uses to process collected data vary depending on datatype:

    ● If the data is an integer, the data will be rounded.● If the data is a decimal fraction, two decimal places will be retained. Any

further decimal places will be rounded.

For example, the instance quantity in AS is an integer. If the rollup period is 5minutes, the values of collected metric data are 1 and 4, while the average valueis 2 instead of 2.5.

You can choose the proper rollup method to meet your service requirements.

1.5 How Long Is the Metric Data Retained?Metric data includes raw and rolled-up data.

    ● Raw data is sampled raw data and is retained for two days.● Rolled-up data is data aggregated based on raw data. The retention time for

rolled-up data depends on the rollup period:– Rollup period of 5 minutes: data retained for 10 days– Rollup period of 20 minutes: data retained for 20 days– Rollup period of 1 hour: data retained for 155 days– Rollup period of 4 hours: data retained for 300 days– Rollup period of 24 hours: data retained for 5 years

If a resource is stopped, closed, or deleted, the original metric will be deleted onehour after its raw data is not reported. After the metric data report resumes, thehistorical data of that metric is available.

  • 1.6 How Many Rollup Methods Does Cloud EyeSupport?

Cloud Eye supports the following rollup methods:

    ● AverageIf Avg. is selected for Statistic, Cloud Eye calculates the average value ofmetric data within a rollup period.

    ● MaximumIf Max. is selected for Statistic, Cloud Eye calculates the maximum value ofmetric data within a rollup period.

    ● MinimumIf Min. is selected for Statistic, Cloud Eye calculates the minimum value ofmetric data within a rollup period.

    ● SumIf Sum is selected for Statistic, Cloud Eye calculates the sum of metric datawithin a rollup period.

    ● VarianceIf Variance is selected for Statistic, Cloud Eye calculates the variance value ofmetric data within a rollup period.

Rollup uses a rollup method to aggregate raw data generated within a specific period.Take the 5-minute period as an example. If it is 10:35 now, the raw data generatedbetween 10:30 and 10:35 will be aggregated to 10:30.

1.7 What OSs Does the Agent Support? The following table lists OSs compatible with Agent. OSs not included in the tableare being tested.

  • 2 Usages2.1 What Is an Alarm Notification? How Many Types ofAlarm Notifications Does Cloud Eye Support? How CanI Configure Them?

Alarm notifications are actions that the system takes when the alarm status of analarm rule is changed.

You can configure alarm notifications when creating or modifying an alarm rule. You can also disable alarm notifications.

Cloud Eye supports the following alarm notification types:

    ● Sends emails to users, or sends HTTP/HTTPS requests to servers.● Triggers automatic capacity expansion and reduction by working with AS.

2.2 Why Are the Network Traffic Metrics in Cloud EyeDifferent from Those Detected in ECS?

The sample data collection interval in Cloud Eye is different from that used by themetric monitoring tool in the ECS.

Cloud Eye collects ECS and EVS data at four-minute intervals. The data collectioninterval for ECS second generation is 5 minutes. However, the metric monitoringtool in the ECS collects data at one-second intervals.

As the data collection cycle gets longer, the distortion of short time data increases. Therefore, Cloud Eye is suitable for monitoring long-term websites andapplications running on ECSs.

Furthermore, you can configure alarm thresholds to generate alarms in the eventof resource exceptions or insufficiency, improving resource reliability.

  • 2.3 What Are the Effects on ECS Metrics If VM Tools IsNot Installed on ECSs?

If VM Tools is not installed on ECSs, Cloud Eye can still monitor the outbandincoming rate and outband outgoing rate. However, it cannot monitor memoryusage, disk usage, inband incoming rate, or inband outgoing rate, which reducesdata accuracy of the CPU usage.

For details about ECS metrics supported by Cloud Eye, see Basic ECS Metrics.

2.4 Why Is the Monitoring Data Not Displayed on theCloud Eye Console?

    Possible causes are as follows:

    ● The ECS or BMS has been stopped for more than 1 hour.● The EVS disk is not attached to an ECS or a BMS.● No backend server is bound to the elastic load balancer or all backend servers

are shut down.● It is less than 10 minutes after a resource is purchased.

2.5 How Can I Export Monitoring Data?1. On the console, choose Cloud Service Monitoring or Server Monitoring.2. Click Export Data.3. Set the time range, resource type, dimension, monitored object, and metric.4. Click Export.

You can export data of multiple metrics at a time.

    ● The first row in the exported monitoring report displays the user name, regionname, service name, instance name, instance ID, metric name, monitoringdata, time, and timestamp. This report enables users to view historicalmonitoring data.

    ● If you need to convert the time in Unix timestamp to the time of the targettime zone, perform the following steps:

    a. Use Excel to open a .csv file.b. Use the following formula to convert the time:

    Target time = (Unix timestamp/1000 + (Target time zone) x 3600)/86400+ 70 x 365 + 19

    c. Set cell format to Date. For example, the Unix timestamp is 1475918112000 and the target timeis Beijing time. Beijing is located in the UTC+8 time zone. Therefore, thetarget time is calculated as follows:

    https://support.huaweicloud.com/intl/en-us/usermanual-ecs/ecs_03_1002.html

  • Target time = (1475918112000/1000 + (+8) x 3600)/86400 + 70 x 365+ 19Set the cell format to date and select a presentation format such as2016/3/14 13:30. Then, the final time is obtained and presented as2016/10/8 17:15.

2.6 Under What Circumstances Will an Alarm RuleTrigger "Insufficient data"?

When the monitoring data of a metric is not reported to Cloud Eye for threeconsecutive hours, the alarm rule status changes to Insufficient data. In this case,if you click Insufficient data for Trigger condition when creating the alarm rule, the system will send an email or a text message to you in a timely manner, so thatyou can locate problems promptly. The system can also send HTTP or HTTPSrequests to the server.

In special cases, if the period for reporting monitoring data is greater than threehours and for three consecutive periods the monitoring data is not reported, thealarm rule status changes to Insufficient data.

2.7 How Do I Handle the Garbled CSV File If I Open Itwith Excel?

You can export the Cloud Eye monitoring data as a CSV file, but when you openthis file with Excel, there may be garbled Chinese characters. This is because theexported CSV file is encoded in UTF-8 while Excel is opened in the ANSI format. Tosolve this problem, use either of the following solutions:

    ● Use a text editor such as NotePad or use WPS to open the exported CSV file.● When you open the CSV file, set Excel as follows:

    1. Create an EXCEL file.2. Choose Data > From Text.3. Select the exported monitoring data file in CSV format and click Import.

The Text Import Wizard dialog box is displayed.4. Select Delimited and click Next.5. Deselect Tab, select Comma, and click Next.6. Click Finish.7. In the Import Data dialog box, click OK.

2.8 Why I Cannot See the Monitoring Data on theCloud Eye Console After Purchasing Cloud ServiceResources?

We are working to interconnect Cloud Eye with more cloud services. Before theinterconnection is completed, you cannot view the resource monitoring data of the

    Cloud EyeFAQs 2 Usages

  • cloud services that have not been interconnected with Cloud Eye. Therefore, if youwant to check the resource monitoring data of the cloud services you purchased, you need to first check whether the cloud services have been interconnected withCloud Eye.

If the services have been interconnected with Cloud Eye, wait for a period of time, because the frequencies of each service to collect and report data to Cloud Eye aredifferent. You can view the resource monitoring graph after Cloud Eye collects thefirst piece of monitoring data.

2.9 How Can I Ensure the Newly Purchased ECS Has theOS Monitoring Function?

    Scenarios

This topic describes how to enable the newly purchased ECS coming with the OSMonitoring function.

The created private image cannot be used across regions. If the private image is used acrossregions, no monitoring data is available.

    Prerequisites

The ECS has the Agent installed is available.

Procedure1. Log in to the ECS console. On the ECS list, locate the row containing the ECS

with the Agent installed, and choose More > Stop in the Operation column.

Figure 2-5 Modifying the Agent configuration file

2.10 Why the Cloud Eye Console Does Not Display theOS Monitoring Data or the Data Display Is LaggedAfter Agent Is Installed and Configured on ECS?

After installing the Agent successfully, you need to choose Server Monitoring, enable the ECS Monitoring Status, and wait for 2 minutes. Then the OSMonitoring data will be displayed on the Cloud Eye console.

If Agent Status is Running and Monitoring Status is enabled, but no OSMonitoring data is displayed after you have waited for 5 minutes, you need tocheck whether the ECS time and the console client time are consistent.

When the Agent reports data, it takes the ECS or BMS local time. When theconsole delivers requests, it takes the browser time of the user client. If the twotimes are inconsistent, no OS Monitoring data is displayed on the Cloud Eyeconsole.

Run the following command to change the BMS time to be the same as that of themonitoring server: timedatectl set-timezone 'Asia/Shanghai'

Cloud Eye Agent uses HTTP requests to report data. Dynamic ports are randomlyoccupied during the reporting. The port range is obtained from the system file: /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_range. If the service port used conflicts with theport used by the Agent, you can modify /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_rangeand restart the Agent to solve the problem.

Procedure1. Log in an ECS or a BMS as user root.2. Run the following command to open the sysctl.conf file:

vim /etc/sysctl.conf3. (Permanent modification) Run the following command to add new port

    configurations to the sysctl.conf file:net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range=49152 65536

    4. Run the following command to make the modification take effect:sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf

    ● The permanent modification still takes effect after the ECS or BMS is restarted.● For temporary modification (which expires after the ECS or BMS is restarted), run

    command # echo 49152 65536 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_range.

    5. Run the following command to restart the Agent:/usr/local/telescope/telescoped restart

/usr/local/telescope is the Agent installation path.

2.21 Why Is the Basic Monitoring Data Inconsistentwith the OS Monitoring Data?

    Symptom

CPU Usage under Basic Monitoring is greater than 90% and is close to 100%,which is greatly different from that under OS Monitoring.

Causes1. If you set idle to poll in the guest operating system (guestOS), and the

guestOS is idle and enters the polling state, it consumes computing resources

    Cloud EyeFAQs 2 Usages

  • and does not proactively release CPU resources. As a result, the CPU usage isabnormal.

    2. In the HANA instance, idle is set to mwait in the guestOS. When the guestOSis idle and enters the mwait status, the guestOS consumes less resourcesthan that when idle is set to poll. However, the guestOS does not proactivelyrelease CPU resources, too. As a result, the CPU usage is abnormal.

    Solution

To view more accurate monitoring data, you are advised to install the Agent toview OS monitoring data.

2.22 Why a BMS Is Displayed in the ECS List on theServer Monitoring Page After the Agent Is Installed onthe BMS?

    Symptom

After the Agent is installed on a BMS, it is listed on the Server Monitoring >Elastic Cloud Server page on the Cloud Eye console.

    Possible Causes

The Agent determines whether the server is an ECS or BMS based on the serviceprovided via the IP address 169.254.169.254. If the route of this address ischanged, the Agent will consider the server as an ECS by default.

    Solution

Manually modify the Agent configuration file. Add a BMS identifier BmsFlag andset it to true.

    ● For details about a Linux OS, see (Optional) Manually Configuring theAgent for Linux.

    ● For details about a Windows OS, see (Optional) Manually Configuring theAgent for Windows.

2.23 What Should I Do If the Monitoring Period IsInterrupted or the Agent Status Frequently Changes?

    Symptom

If the following symptoms occur, the Agent is overloaded or is not running stably:

    ● On the Server Monitoring module on the Cloud Eye console, the Agentstatus changes frequently between Running and Faulty.

    ● The time period in the monitoring panel is interrupted.

  • Possible Causes

To prevent other services from being affected, Cloud Eye uses a fuse mechanismto automatically stop the Agent process once it consumes too many CPU ormemory resources on the server. After the Agent process is stopped, no monitoringdata will be reported.

    Principles of the Fuse Mechanism

By default, the Agent detection mechanism is as follows:

Check whether the CPU usage of the Agent process exceeds 30% or the memoryusage exceeds 700 MB every minute, that is, the second threshold. If the CPU ormemory usage exceeds the second threshold, the Agent process exits. If the CPUor memory usage of the Agent process does not exceed the second threshold, check whether it exceeds the first threshold (10% of CPU usages or 200 MB ofmemory usage). If it exceeds the first threshold for three consecutive times, exitthe Agent process and record the information.

After the Agent exit, the daemon process automatically starts the Agent processand checks the exit record. If there are three consecutive exit records, the Agentwill hibernate for 20 minutes, during which monitoring data will not be collected.

When too many disks are attached to a server, the CPU or memory usage of theAgent process will become high. You can configure the first and second thresholdsto trigger the fuse mechanism according to the actual resource usages.

Procedure1. Log in to the ECS or BMS on which the Agent does not report data as user

    root.

    2. Run the following command to go to the Agent installation path bin:

    cd /usr/local/telescope/bin

In a Windows OS, the directory is telescope_windows_amd64\bin.

    3. Modify configuration file conf.json.

    a. Run the following command to open conf.json:

    vi conf.json

    b. Add the parameters listed in Table 2-3 to the conf.json file.

    Table 2-3 Parameter description
