Farm Animal Matching Game Assembly/Preparation

Print one copy of each page in this file on index stock or paper and laminate for longer life.

Cut along dotted lines.

Playing the game.

Mix the cards up and then place each card face down on the playing area.

The first person then takes a turn and turns over two cards. If the cards match they are removed from play and that person gets another turn. If the cards do not match, they are again turned face down on the playing area. Play proceeds to the next person with the same rules. Game is over when all cards have been removed from the playing area. The person with the most matched pairs wins the game.

Tips.

When playing this game with young children it is beneficial to say the name of every animal when you turn over the card. This will help the child recognize each animal.

Use the cards as discussion starters to talk about what the animals do, what sound they make, what they like to eat, and what their babies are called.

Talk about the differences and similarities in animals. For instance, a duck and a turkey both have feathers and wings but a turkey cannot fly very far. (Domesticated turkeys cannot fly at all.) A cow is big and a mouse is little. Which animals have soft fur? You get the idea, so encourage your toddlers to think about the animals in these ways too!
