Farm biosecurity plans = national food safety

Since Oct 2017, Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) accredited producers require:‐1. Farm biosecurity plan. 2. Health status statements for all incoming livestock. Vendor dec’s for grain/fodder.

3. Isolate new livestock for a period of time.4. Contamination minimised from visitors, vehicles, equipment and fodder.

5. Incoming movements recorded. 6. Animal welfare standards & guidelineshttps://www.mla.com.au/meat‐safety‐and‐traceability/red‐meat‐integrity‐system/about‐the‐livestock‐production‐assurance‐program/

National approach to farm biosecurity

• Includes managing Johne’s disease across herds.

• Biosecurity plans and practices audited                       under LPA process.

• LPA accreditation renewed                                             every 3 yrs. Cost $60+GST.

• Need to be LPA accredited                                              to access National Vendor                                               Declarations for livestock movements.

Where to find Biosecurity Plan templates?

• Templates available from                                  national Farm Biosecurity Toolkit http://www.farmbiosecurity.com.au/toolkit/

or Animal Health Australia https://www.animalhealthaustralia.com.au/wp‐content/uploads/On‐Farm‐Biosecurity‐Plan‐Template.pdf

Six biosecurity principles

For cropping, livestock or mixed farming:‐

1. Farm inputs

2. Farm outputs

3. People, vehicles and equipment

4. Production practices

5. Feral pests, diseases and weeds

6. Train, plan and record

Everyone has a biosecurity obligation

Qld Biosecurity Act 2014

• Everyone must minimise risk of transporting, growing, buying or disposing of biosecurity matter (weeds, pests, diseases).

• Landholders must stay informed of pests, weeds & diseases.

• Property visitors ought to know their biosecurity risks. If not, landholder needs                   to provide or direct them to information.

Reduce risk of GRT with farm inputs

• New livestock into holding paddock for 7 days to pass viable GRT seed.

• Reputable sources of fodder,                          with no GRT seed.

• Check no GRT in farm inputs ‐ gravel, sand, soil conditioners, mulch.

• Use quality pasture seed. Retain a sample.

• Check for GRT tussocks after flood waters recede.

People, vehicles and equipment

• GRT seeds are sticky when wet.                                   Avoid movement through GRT                                    areas during dew, rain.

• Which farm visitors & contractors                       are high risk for GRT?

• Induct high risk visitors /contractors

– Can they recognise GRT?

– Provide property map with no‐go zones.

– Check their vehicle (radiator grill, cabin mat, etc).

– Insist on vehicle clean down on site or can they use your farm vehicle on property?

Farm visitor register

• Important for trace back & trace forward movements, if biosecurity outbreak.

• Are your contact details up to date with regular contractors ‐ for prior notice of farm access?                                                   (eg. Ergon / Powerlink powerlines, Rural Fire Services, Local Govt shire roads, Main Roads, etc)

Vehicle and equipment clean down

• Work from GRT clean areas to infested areas.

• Use high pressure air &/or water to clean down GRT seeds from vehicles and equipment.

• Mark clean down site in paddock. Follow up for  future GRT emergence.

• Provide clean down pad on property for visitor equipment and your own farm equipment.

• Certified wash downs are costly.                                    Only use when appropriate.

Farm outputs

• If you have GRT, obligation                                             to minimise spread of GRT.

• Hold livestock in GRT‐free paddock for 7 days, before leaving property.

• Stock proof fence and maintain at least 10‐20m GRT‐free property buffer and water course buffer.

• Keep property tracks & yards free of seeding GRT.

• Minimise GRT seed on vehicles                                and goods leaving the property.

Control isolated outbreaks of GRT

• One year’s seed is seven year’s weed !

• Remove GRT seed head & grub out tussock.

• Apply correct, calibrated dose of herbicide (1.5g/m2 granular or 2ml/L liquid flupropanate) for selective, residual control of GRT seedlings. Ideally sprinkle legume seed. Abide by grazing withholding periods on label.

• If tussock not removed, trickle glyphosate herbicide into crown of GRT tussock (20ml/L). Glyphosate is not selective. Avoid overspray.

Manage GRT before it manages you !

Reduced productivity and land values due to GRT.High cost of managing dense GRT infestations.Prevent and minimise risk of GRT entering your property.
