Wendy Mak, a Sydney personal stylist is passionate about helping people of all shapes and sizes to feel confident and look fantastic. It’s a red thread that has been connecting all parts of her career.

“When we have curves or are self-conscious about a specific area, we usually tend to cover it up by wearing something quite loose,” she says. “When we couple the loose top with a loose skirt, rather than hiding the turkey rolls, we actually end up looking quite like a ham instead!”

So her secret is this: wear a fitted item at the top OR bottom to flatter your curves and

create some shape. In essence the idea is this: if an item is fitted at the top then keep it looser at the bottom, and vice versa.

“You might have a top and skirt that are both individually terrific, but worn together they just don’t work. If you wear a loose blouse with a loose skirt, you will lack shape.” Wendy explains.

Instead she recommends choosing a more fitted but not overly tight top with a looser skirt. “You would instantly see your great curves, and yet nothing you wouldn’t want to show is visible” she says. On the other hand, if you chose a loose blouse or top, you would want to make sure you had a more fitted skirt at the bottom or perhaps a pair of straight legged jeans.

“There are too things you want to be careful of: lack of proportion and too much volume” Wendy summarises “This concept has a HUGE impact yet many women aren’t aware of its effect.”

Wendy herself has had a big impact not only on the thousands of women she has been working

with, but also on the personal styling scene. She is affectionately known as the "godmother of styling" because she has personally trained many of the fashion stylists in the industry.

Most recently she published the book "The Terrific Thirty: 30 Items, 1000 Outfits" which shows how a complete wardrobe can be created from a mere 30 items.

When she founded Smitten With Style years ago, all Wendy wanted was to bring stylists to real people with real bodies and real lifestyles. A lot has happened in her career since, but she is still passionate about working with clients one-on-one. “Seeing someone transform like that is very rewarding” she says.
