SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 12, 2012 VOL. LXIII NO. 7

The following is a letter from Bishop Howard J. Hubbard Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: I write concerning a serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fun-damental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which is designed to be “of, by, and for the people,” has just dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people—the Catholic population—and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic Church. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced recently that almost all employers, including Catholic employ-ers, will be forced to offer their employees’ health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contracep-tion. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those “services” in the health policies they write. And almost all indi-viduals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their poli-cies. In so ruling, the Administration has cast aside the First Amend-ment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catho-lics and others our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. As a result, unless the rule is over-turned, the institutions of the Catholic Church such as schools, colleges, hospitals nursing homes and catholic charities agen-cies, will be compelled either to violate their moral consciences, or to drop health coverage for their employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The government’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens nor can the First Amendment to our Constitution be thrashed to suit the fads and fashions of the moment. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom which has been such an important part of our nation’s greatness. As Cardinal designate Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, in response to this ruling, stated: “The Catholic Church defends religious liberty, including freedom of conscience, for everyone. The Amish do not carry health insurance. The gov-ernment respects their principles. Christian Scientists want to heal by prayer alone, and the new health-care reform law re-spects that. Quakers and others object to killing even in war-time, and the government respects that principle for conscien-tious objectors. By its decision the government has failed to show the same respect for the consciences of Catholics and oth-

ers who object to treating pregnancy as a disease." In light of this government intrusion on religious freedom during the forthcoming Lenten Season, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting www.usccb.org/conscience, to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the government’s decision. With gratitude for your attention to this matter, I am Sincerely yours in Christ,

Howard J. Hubbard Bishop of Albany ***************************************************

SISTER PARISH ANNUAL COLLECTION

This weekend, February 11-12, we will be having our annual collection for first aid and over the counter drug items for our Sister

Parishes in Georgia. For several years, we have been able to help the newly arriving agricultural workers. Welcome packets are assembled and distrib-uted to them to help ease the transition to the many hours of hard field labor they will do. Suggested items are: band aids, gauze, anti-septic ointments, aspirin, after sting oint-ments, antibacterial wipes (no large bottles of soaps, please), etc.

We are not able to ship any liquids. Toothpaste is purchased there as it is also too heavy for us to ship. Father Brown and Sister Mary Bordelon truly count on Saint Pius’ help with this collection. Look for the RED Sister Parish bins !

PASTORAL CARE “Brothers and sisters, whether you eat or drink, or what-ever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” + St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians reminds us that at the heart of all our choices must be God’s will. That means our decision- making may include risks, changes and sacri-fices that might not be our personal preferences. That means our love for God, Our Savior, will lead us beyond the limita-tions of our own minds and hearts. For God’s glory to shine Christ must become first and we must ultimately follow His way. It isn’t easy! But it is the only way! Will you ask the Lord to be “number one” in your life? In today’s gospel Jesus healed the leper to reveal God’s glory. Jesus saw more than the leprosy. He saw the face of a man pleading for healing and longing for a caring touch. He saw more than open sores; He saw a man suffering alienation and isolation. Jesus was moved with pity for suffering had a face and a name. His tender touch, a transgression against the norms of the time, was the beginning of a dramatic change for this outcast. Jesus healed a man, restored his re-lationships with his family and community, and challenged the Hebrew people to look beyond a disease into the eyes of a person, a child of God. For Jesus, all was for the Father’s glory! What keeps you from reaching out to another in need? This week the church challenges us to reflect on what keeps us from doing the Father’s will. Consider: Who are the peo-ple you shun? Have your circumstances and/or attitudes kept you apart? Do the leprous sores of anger, bitterness, resentment, or unforgiveness prevent you from a real rela-tionship? Are you willing to reach out to those you have labeled outcasts? If so, how? Will you reach out and touch them for the glory of God?

Is it hard to reach out? Ask God to do it through you.

Touch another with the Lord’s Compassion! MINISTERS OF PRAYER: In FEBRUARY please pray THAT THE LORD WILL SUSTAIN ALL THOSE AS-SISTING THE SICK AND ELDERLY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, REFRESHING THEM IN BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT.

GOOD NEWS: Thank you to all who helped the Pastoral Care Office with the Bereavement Mailings for the Spring. What would I do without your help. Thank You!!!!

Family Perspectives by Bud Ozar: Family life is about deci-sions. The leper in today’s gospel knew this when he said to Jesus. “If you will, you can make me clean.” Jesus knew this when he said, “I do will it.” Love is not an emotion. It is a deci-sion to be with and for another person in “good times and bad,” even when we don’t feel like it.

We respectfully remind everyone to observe the No parking areas on the parish grounds. These areas provide for everyone’s safety, and in case of emer-gency they provide access for emergency vehicles. Also, please park only within the lines designated as parking spaces. Areas outside of those lines are for emergency access. Thank you.

*************************************************** “DO EVERYTHING FOR THE GLORY OF GOD” What is your true calling in life? Is it to help other people? Is it to de-velop the talents that God gave you? Is it to love and support your family? While all of these may be true for us we don’t of-ten recognize that our deepest calling, or vocation, is to give glory to the God who creates, saves, and sanctifies us. In the First Letter to the Corinthians Paul exhorts us to “do everything for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). The one person who did this better than anyone else was Jesus Christ. So it comes as no surprise that Paul also tells us to “be imitators of Christ.” How did Jesus give glory to God? He sought not his “own bene-fit but that of the many, that they might be saved” (1 Corinthians 31:33). Today’s Gospel gives us a challenging example from Jesus’ life. Jesus saves a leper from the stigma and suffering of leprosy. Afterward the leper joyfully returns to the community and tells everyone the good news about what Jesus did for him. As a result Jesus finds that he now experiences the exclusion that the leper had once known. He can no longer “enter a town openly” and must remain “outside in deserted places.” IMITATORS OF CHRIST Most of us will probably never cure anyone from leprosy or any other disease. How, then, are we to imitate the Christ who worked such wonders? We are called to give glory to God by using our own gifts with courage and generosity, as Jesus did. We are called to seek not our “own benefit but that of the many.” risking our own pride, status, time, money, or pleasure for the common good. We are called to tell everyone the good news about what Christ does for us—and through us—every day. Then everything we do will be for the glory of God.

CHANGE FOR CHANGE COIN DRIVE The St. Pius X Orphanage Committee is sponsoring an upcom-ing Coin Drive to raise money for the St. Francis Xavier Or-phanage in Haiti. We are hoping to get as many of our parish families as possi-ble involved in this fundraiser. As the Lenten Season ap-proaches, its never too early to start thinking about our Lenten offerings. Similar to the concept of a rice bowl, the committee will be handing out coin containers the weekend of February 11-12 after all masses. Considering the average Haitian family lives on less than two dollars a day, your spare change will go a long way. The Coin Drive will end on April 1st when families will be able to return their coin containers after masses. Parishioners will also have the opportunity to help count the change down in the parish center at 11am on Sunday, April 1st. We hope that parishioners and families of all ages will be able to join us for this intergenerational event! ***************************************************
