First off, congratulations to Bernie Pettipiece for his amazing performance at this year’s Derby City Classic. 7th place in that fi eld was quite an accomplishment. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Is it just me, or are things starting to look up as far as tournaments here in Arizona? The Winter Shootout can only be described as a huge success, and next we have Main Street’s Tournament of Champions this week. Not to mention the Az Open on the Darts side of things. Speaking of Darts, congrats to David Fatum on his endorsement deals with TRINIDAD darts and FIT Flights. We had planned on article about these deals but ran out of space this month. I made some changes to the pool tournament guide. Check it out for some new events that rooms are starting up. See everyone out there. -Mike

Arizona Billiard & Dart News February 2012Bernardi and Brewer Split Metro 7’s & Under

Mike Bernardi and Jimmy Brewer fought to a hill-hill scoreline in the finals before deciding to split first place at the Metro Sportz Bar monthly 7’s & Under 10-ball event.

The winners side of the event came down to Billy Coulston vs Bernardi and this hard fought match was won by Ber-nardi 7-5. Meanwhile, Brewer was eliminating Joe Masi on the one loss side by the same 7-5 scoreline.

Jimmy went on to defeat Coulston 7-4 on the one loss side to set up the final match with Bernardi.

Bernardi came out strong in the finals and raced to an early 4-1 lead. Jimmy wasn’t going to settle for second that quickly though as he came back and won the next four games for a 5-4 lead. At 5-5, the long day of pool seemed to get the bet-ter of both players as Brewer failed to get out with ball in hand on the last three balls to let Bernardi get to 6-5. Next was Bernardi’s turn to hand one to Brewer as Bernardi missed a very make-able 10-ball in the 14th rack that would have given him the win. Instead, the score was tied at 6-6 and the two players put their heads together to negotiate a split.

With Brewer not having bought into the $30 side pot, Bernardi still ended up with more in payouts than Brewer.

Ed Scott Wins The Hard Way

Ed Scott came back from the one loss side to win the Knobby’s Monthly Open 8-Ball Tournament on January 6th.

The hot-seat was taken by Hopell Ampongan, who scored a 2-0 win over Tyson Cole to earn his place in the finals.

Scott bounced back from an early loss and made his way to the finals through the one loss side. His semi-final 2-1 win over Cole was highlighted by Cole making an early 8-ball on his first shot in the case game.

Scott would have to defeat Ampongan twice to earn this title and he did just that. An early 8-ball by Scott gave the advantage to Ampongan in game one of the first set, but Hopell was unable to get out with chances in the next two games and Scott won the first set 2-1.

The second set of the finals saw both players break and run on their breaks, but Ampongan could not capitalize on a mid-run scratch by Scott. Hopell left him-self a jump shot on his last ball and fouled while making the ball. Scott quickly ran out the remaining balls for the 2-1 win.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News February 2012Briseno wins 2012 Desert Classic Tour Season Opener

Gus Briseno started off the 2012 Desert Classic Tour schedule the same way he played most of the 2011 season; with a win.

Briseno was the early favorite in the fi eld of 49 players, and he lived up that billing with lop-sided wins all day on Saturday. The closest any opponent got to Briseno was Bobby Emmons who was able to turn an 8-2 defi cit into a 9-6 scoreline before Briseno won the match 10-6.

Sunday dawned with twelve players still hold-ing hope for a tournament win. The winners side saw Briseno facing Ken Gouso and Pete Lhotka vs Brett Huth. Brisno and Huth would score wins in those matches to move one step closer to a victory.

The one loss side saw Chuck Evans eliminate Dennis Orender, Tucson’s George Teyechea beat Nick De Leon in De Leon’s fi rst event in months, Mike Hamman over Ronn Rutan and Brian Reich beating Sammy Martinez.

With the fi eld down to eight players, all hope of a tournament title going back to Tucson were eliminated when Chuck Evans beat Teyechea and Brian Reich beat Mike Hamman.

Evans and Reich kept their A-Games as they then eliminated Ken Gouso and Pete Lhotka in 5th place.

The hot-seat went to Briseno in another lopsided match as the cold that Huth was fi ghting off all weekend got the better of him. Briesno had a bit to do with the fi nal score too as he won the match 10-2.

Back on the one loss side, Evans sent Brian

Reich packing in 4th place.

Evans then faced off with the same player who had sent him to the one loss side; Brett Huth. Evans came out fast with a 9-ball break following by a break and run in rack two for a 2-0 lead before Huth even saw a shot. That 2-0 lead would quickly become a 5-1 lead. Huth fought back to within one rack at 5-4, but that was as close as he would get before Evans won the match 8-5.

The fi nal match between Briseno and Chuck Evans again saw Evans take an early 2-0 lead, but Briseno then won fi ve straight games for a 5-2 lead. Once again, Briesno had his break working well as he was making balls on his break and gaining early control of the table. The time in the chair seemed to take it’s toll on Evans as he appeared to have problems getting his game going midway through the match. Briseno worked his way to a 9-5 lead the match appeared to be over when he made the 9-ball in the sixteenth rack, but the end of the tour-nament was postponed when the cue ball also found a pocket on the shot. Briseno regrouped and three fouled Evans in the next rack for the delayed tournament win.

What can I do to win more matches than last year?

By Jerry BriesathBCA Master Instructor

It’s a universal question asked by every participant in every sport. Let’s talk about some of the ways you can improve your game.

First - Observation

There are many things you can learn from watching the best players in your league system if you know what to look for, and some of these things are very subtle, and then compare these things to what you are doing. Notice how the good players keep the cue very level, within an inch of the rail, on almost every shot. Also notice that when they shoot the shot, the cue stick goes straight ahead through the cue ball four to six

inches and that it doesn’t make a left or right turn after striking the cue ball. Another observation to make is that the good players do not move their head at all during the stroke. When watching a good player, see if you can guess what he is going to do with the cue ball to get position on the next shot and see how it compares to what you would have done. These are just a few of the things you should be alert to when watching better players.

Second - Books and Tapes

There are hundreds of instructional books and tapes out there that can help you help your game. Some are better than others but most have much to of-fer. Robert Byrne has some great tapes and books, and the tape I made for the BCA “How to Play Pool Right”, as

well as my new DVD, A Pool Lesson with Jerry Briesath, can help a lot.

Third - Private Lessons

While books and tapes and observation can help your game, a good teaching professional can literally turn your game around in a few days. You can use the internet to find an instructor in your area. There is also a list of local instructors in this paper.

There is a way to improve your game -- Jerry

Eugene Hemphill & Captain Lisa Bradford of Shoot the Moon! Coming in as the defending Champions they defeated the Pocket Monsters, Pup n Suds and the Ball Busters to win the winners side of the bracket. Playing them for the Championship was Tom Clark, Chris Reni-car & Jim Rogers of the Ball Busters, who had already faced them once for their first loss. In the rematch Shoot the Moon took a 10-2 lead in the first game and never looked back. After the first round they were up 27-18, by the 2nd they were up 57-32 with 2 more wins in the 3rd round to seal the deal and become 3x AZPL State Champions! The fun began on Friday night at Stinger’s Sports Bar with the Men’s & Women’s MVP Singles tournaments as well as an open singles tournament and 8-Ball Break & Run Derby. Of the 12 players, it was a Flagstaff reunion of sorts for the top 3 players with for-mer Flagstaff player Derek Deffner finishing in 1st and current Flagstaff members Kent Bybee taking 2nd and Eric Menard finishing in 3rd. In the Open Singles there was a full field as well with

Doug Weber finishing in 1st, Brennan Larson taking 2nd and Jim Rogers claiming 3rd! On Saturday the Championship Tournament began with 24 teams shooting. Ginsu Knife of Flagstaff won the most matches with 5 but came up short, being eliminated by fellow Flagstaffers Pup n Suds! The surprise team of the day was the Double A’s, who after going 4-10 during the season rattled off an impres-sive 4 wins in a row before losing their last 2 matches to be ousted. Curtis Elifritz of Ginsu Knife was the Tournament MVP, going 20-1 in

7 matches with 6 30s and outscoring his opponents 206-89. Top Female shooter in the tournament went to Cathy Beyale of I Got Sum Ting who went 7-2. I’d like to thank everyone who came out as well as everyone who helped put on another great Cham-pionship! Without you none of this is possible! Carlos Avalos couldn’t explain what prompted him to try playing a tournament with headphones on, and he wouldn’t give up the name of the song that he claimed was on repeat on his ipod, but he was certainly glad that he made the decision as he cruised through a monster field of 95 other players to win the first Annual Winter 9-Ball Shootout at Skip & Jan’s on January 13th - 15th.

The event kicked off on Friday and the big names falling to the left side of the board got started right away. Billy Coulston beat Donald Mangahas, Bernie Store beat Harold Lyons, Tra-vis Kendle beat Jerry Stuckart, George Bell beat Dale Teague, Steve Deluna beat Derrick Cumm, Jeremy Gibbs (remember that name) beat Jimmy Brewer and Randy Kinney beat Susan Williams. Those were just some of the marquee matches in the opening round of play.

Saturday matches would be important when cutting a field of 96 players down to just twelve players, and everyone knew they would have to bring their A games if they had any chance to survive Saturday play. Jerry Stuckart, JR Flores, Marvin Lawson and Joe Masi all dropped out of the tournament via “2 and out” records. Alex Aroz and Dale Teague faired just barely better with “3 and out” records.

Jeremy Gibbs, rated as a six on the sheet, was opening a lot of eyes with his play on this day. Saturday matches saw him beat Skyler Flaherty and Ken Gouso before tournament directors stepped in and informed Gibbs that he would play the rest of the event as an eight. Undeterred, Gibbs then beat Ed Scott 8-6. Gibbs would finally lose to Angel Paglia on the right side of the board.

As Saturday wound down, four players had made their marks on the day’s play. Still undefeated were George Bell (wins over Dale Teague, Chad Barber and Ben Sutherland), Carlos Avalos (wins over Aroz, Brian Reich and Sara Miller), Angel Paglia (wins over Tony Flores and Gibbs) and Steve Deluna (wins over Cumm, Chad Purvis and Jim Rabatin). These four players would return on Sunday to face off for the eventual hot-seat.

Sunday’s losers side matches saw Ben Sutherland eliminate James Lewis, Sara Miller beat Charlie Tay-lor, Donald Mangahas survive a hill-hill scare with Jim Rabatin and Chad Barber end Jeremy Gibbs’ run.

Sutherland then eliminated Miller in a match that saw Sutherland’s 6-2 lead in peril before he won 8-6. Man-gahas also eliminated Barber with an 8-4 scoreline.

The winners side saw Carlos Avalos dominate George Bell 8-3 and Angel Paglia defeat Steve Deluna 8-7.

Ben Sutherland had been dealing with health issues all day and it showed. He dropped the first three games in his next match against George Bell, but came back to win the match 8-6. Steve Deluna also moved on with an 8-5 win over Mangahas.

The match for the hot-seat was another Avalos master-piece as he held a 6-0 lead before Paglia could even get on the board. The final score was 8-2 Avalos. Carlos commented after the match that he thought that was the strongest he had ever played. It if wasn’t, then I feel for whoever had to play him when he played better.

On the one loss side, a combination of Sutherland’s health and the hot play of Deluna led to an 8-1 win for Deluna and 4th place for Sutherland.

Deluna then faced off with Paglia to find out who would

get the unenviable task of facing Avalos in the finals. The match went back and forth with Paglia holding a 2-0 lead and then Deluna winning six games for a 6-2 lead. Paglia then came back and retook the lead at 7-6 and Deluna tieed the match at hill-hill. Deluna found himself running out the final rack and left himself a cut on the 8, needing table length shape on the 9. He made the 8 and got his cue ball the length of the table, but the cue ball found the corner pocket on the shot and Paglia had renewed life in the tournament.

The rematch between Avalos and Paglia started a lot like the first meeting with Avalos taking a quick 4-0 lead. Paglia was not going to give up though, as she clawed back to 4-3. Paglia kept the match close as long as she could, but in the end Avalos was just too strong as he scored an 8-5 win.

After the tournament, Avalos was questioned about the music he had in his ears all day and he said he didn’t really know what made him think about doing it this time. “I wear them sometimes at home when the kids are running around and I want to practice, but I had never worn them in an event before.” Avalos said. Avalos was then questioned as to what he was listening to and he replied “It is actually the same song over and over again”. He wouldn’t say what the song was and commented, “You know, I don’t want Shane and Earl calling me for music tips”.

Chuck Bobbitt thanked Jerry Stuckart, Dick Breese and Chad Barber for their help in running the event, as well as Natalie and the great wait staff at Skip & Jan’s. There was an anonymous donation of $150 in Bill Moore’s name that was awarded to the top finishing 5, 6 and 7 rated players. Bobbitt said plans are already underway for the Winter 9-Ball Shootout II.

BBQ & Manny win Groggy’s Scotch

16 teams, fully recovered from New Year’s, came ready to start the New Year right by taking their fair share of over $ 900 in prize money at Groggy’s on January 7th.

The hot seat match pitted Kevin Arco & Cathy Kelly against Marcie Thomas & Jeff Vikete. This well played match ended with Marcie & Jeff in the hot seat.

The match for 3rd place was between Manny & BBQ and Kevin & Cathy. Manny & BBQ won and for their efforts, Kevin & Cathy took home 3rd place.

This set up a great match between Manny & BBQ and Marcie & Jeff for 1st and 2nd. Marcie and Jeff gave their best effort, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the determination of Manny & BBQ. Jeff & Marcie came away with 2nd and $ 195, while Manny & BBQ took 1st and $ 645.

Leon and his staff are to be commended for their great food, excellent service and a great place to play.

Kevin Arco, Cathy Kelly, BBQ, Marcie Thomas and Jeff Vikete

Handling Disappointment

So it had been awhile since I had wrote a article so I figured I would write one that hit close to home with me a while back.

How do you handle disappoint-ment on the toe line? I had just finished two weeks on the PDC tour (4 events) and already was hearing people saying how poor they were playing or the results they had received.

I was talking with James Wade and he was saying how bad he was at the time, number 3 in the world who made a bit over 600K US the year before play-ing darts feels like he sucks. So it does not matter if you are a league player or someone that travels the world playing darts everyone suffers disappoint-ment but how you handle it will separate who you are. I had just left Gibraltar, a Brit-ish island south of Spain, feel-ing horrible about my results that weekend and all down about my play. As I said EV-ERYONE feels this at times but what is your plan to change it? Will you talk to everyone who will listen and tell them how you are struggling? Do you say I guess I just do suck? Or will

you be the person that says “Ok I I shot bad but I am still a good player.” What you do when you have these feelings is what will separate you from a basement player, a league player or someone that travels the world playing on TV.

I had a night this last season in darts where I had shot 5.7 mpr in Cricket one week and followed it up with a 3.3 the next week. So what did I say when asked what happened? I said “I am playing great! Just because I shot bad one night does not mean I am not a good shot does it?” Of course it doesn’t. I went home and practiced every day and shot 5.4 the next week again. I am traveling so much right now that some times I won’t be as fresh or as ready as I want to be and you have to accept that some results will be less then perfect, but it does not change the player you are.

Now how do you change your negative feelings after a bad loss or bad week in darts? First, do not acknowledge it!!! You are what you tell yourself you are. The number one thing I try to share with other players in Masters is “YOU CONTROL YOUR THOUGHTS!!!!” When you get nervous or are feel-ing negative about your game, it is because of the thoughts you ALLOW that little voice in your head to say to you. Remember it is YOUR voice so

CHANGE THEM to positive thoughts. You NEVER have a shot to win the game, you just have a target, just like any other to hit, it just happens that the game ends when you hit it. If you go up there saying “just hit the double16 to win!!” your brain may go “if I miss I will lose” and YANK in the fat 8 it went so off you go feeling disap-pointed.

Whenever you talk about winning your brain will bring losing into the conver-sation as well. So what do you do? Do what I do, shake their hand, walk away and say “it won’t happen again be-cause I am going to practice even more this week.” If it is a really bad loss take a few minutes to revel in your disbelief by yourself (do not stand there and talk about it as it is over already) then move on to getting better.

If you decide to talk about it and tell everyone how you are struggling then you are just reinforcing those negative thoughts making them the dominate belief you have of yourself.

If you do not learn something about your game every time you play then you are not paying attention or wanting to be better. A very hot player on tour back then had hit 2 finals and 2 semi-finals in two weeks making about 15K US which basically makes him at least another 30K minimum by qualifying

for all the TV events, so I asked what changed? “I am keeping a journal” he replied. WOW, I have had practice journals but never thought about all that but that’s professionalism if I have ever seen it. He tracks how much sleep he is getting at events, what/how much he drinks, the food he eats, the hours/what practice routines he does and how well he felt while playing and the thoughts he felt when losing.

Through this info he developed a system to help him prepare to be a champion and now he is. I have written articles in the past about goal setting and having a plan but Mark Dudbridge has done this perfectly and is now achieving at the highest level. So when you get negative about your game, do not ver-balize it, change it. Go home practice harder, have a plan and change the thoughts you have until all you have is positive pouring out of your ears. Good luck and perfect practice makes perfect not just plain practice.

The pairings of Pete and Cathy split with Harry John and Stephen at the Jimbo’s Friday night dart tournament on January 20th.

Harry John and Stephen took on Rick and Steve G for the hot-seat with Harry and Stephen mak-ing quick work of the 501 game. HJ ended the game with 4 single bulls and 1 double bull over two trips to the board. The cricket game was a seventeen round battle that saw HJ throw a seven mark and Stephen a five mark one round later to take control of the game.

On the one loss side, the team of Alvi and Mark went to a rubber match before eliminating Tom and Angela.

Alvi and Mark then went on to play Cathy and Pete, who had lost to Harry John and Stephen.

Pete’s two low tons were not enough as Alvi and Mark won the 501 game. Pete and Cathy scored an eight round win in the cricket game that came down to both teams needing a bull at the end. The rubber match was lead by Pete who threw two seven marks to lead his team to the win.

The semi-finals were Cathy and Pete vs Rick and Steve. The 501 game went quickly with Pete throwing back to back hat tricks, but the cricket game went to Rick and Pete. That left the teams playing a rubber match that was won by Cathy

and Pete.

The finals were a rematch of an earlier match in the tournament as Cathy and Pete sought revenge on Harry and Stephen. The 501 game went back and forth with Pete and Harry John matching each other dart for dart before Pete finally closed out the game. The cricket game saw all four players throwing great darts with everyone throwing at least a six mark and Harry a nine mark to lead his team to a 598-597 win. The rubber match went to Pete and Cathy 291-239.

Considering the late hour, the two teams decided from that point to split the prize money and both teams were declared win-ner.

Mike, with a lot of long time darts players going down hill and their kids throwing great, what is your take? Doesn’t it bother you and the others?

I can only speak for myself, but I am pretty sure that I speak for the others as well. When your children do great things - whether in school, sports or activities - it is better than if you did it yourself. Now I’m not talking about those hard core dads that their only high-light was the chess club. Most of those guys want their kids to robots and live their life through them. I am talking about guys like myself, Marty Scarborough, Rick Boebel and others who had played darts at

the highest levels and now our kids are playing there as well.

Mike Scarborough won the teenage championship and I know Marty was as proud as can be.

Justin and Mike took their dad’s in the Master’s league and with a little matu-rity, can be two of the best.

For me, after several years of hoping my son Andy would get into darts, he finally did. He is shooting at a top level and I couldn’t be any prouder. My daugher Jamie is a natural and with a little work, could be the best woman player in Arizona. I am not taking any-thing away from our great ladies, but she has the type of talent that doesn’t come along everyday. She has barely played a year and can play with any-

one. My darts are off right now and it has motivated me to get back; but until I do, I will be the proud father of two great dart players.

I know Marty and Rick feel the same way and love seeing their boys suc-ceed in the game that they played for twenty years or more.

The motto of this is that we need more great young dart players. So whether it is your son or daughter, or a friends son or daughter, we need more young players.

And thanks for calling us “Long Time Players” instead of “Old Farts”.

As usual, I may be wrong but I doubt it.

See you at the Arizona Open.

Rachu runs over Metro Weekly

Tim Rachu ran rampant over the field to win the Metro Sportz Bar Weekly 7’s & Under 9-Ball event on January 21st

Rachu took the hot-seat with a dominant win over Mario Barron and waited for an opponent in the finals.

Yuma’s Tony Flores was plowing through the one loss side after a second round loss and he sent Barron to the rail with a 5-2 scoreline.

As strong as Flores was playing, he had no answers for Rachu as Rachu won the final match 5-0 for the tournament win.

Mick’s Tournament of ChampionsThe site was Champion’s Sports Bar in downtown Gilbert. Fifty eight dart play-ers, lots of regulars and lots of friends were on hand to pay tribute to a great ambassador for darts.

Mick and his brother Denny owned a few bars on the eastside of town and some years back, Mick passed away from Leukemia.

Denny, along with Bill Beard, have kept Mick’s memory alive and with that, have helped out with a tournament in Mick’s honor during the week that would have have been his birthday.

The raffle prizes could have filled a U-Haul truck and the support was amazing. Each year, the raffle and auction are held to support a young person battling Leukemia. At press time, the final count was not available, but I guarantee it was well over $1,000 from the raffle.

Each year, many of the dart players give back some of the winnings from the event, and this year was no exception.

The top three winners were...

1st Harry John & Brian Sams $4402nd Brad Halley & Beth Roman $3203rd Dario Meza & Rick Scutieri $200

Great darts, great people and great fun. It is something we all look forward to each year - a road trip to Gilbert.

I know Denny, Billy and the rest of the Champions family appreciate the sup-port.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News February 2012

Results for the January Preacher Ronn tournament are now offi -cially recorded in history.

Seventeen players showed up since the Cat (Scott Frost) was away at the Derby City Classic. I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying, “When the cat’s away the mice must play.” And so they did. Com-ing from as far as Tucson and all ready to take their shot in this open handicapped tournament. Player ratings ranged from 6 to 10-2A. In fact for the fi rst time in as long as I can remember, we actually had more players rated Seven and below than players rated 10 and above. That scenario set up some tough matches up for the 10’s and 10-1’s giving up serious concessions.

Toward the end we’d see Bobby Emmons a 10-1A giving up 10/6 to Harold Lyons. Bobby would prevail and Harold would go to the one loss side to face that no-name guy Bernie Pettipiece, (who hap-pened to make it to round 10 in this year’s Derby.) Congratulations Bernie. So true to form Bernie put Harold away despite the 11/6, 11/7 uphill battle. This would be Harold’s highest fi nish in a One Pocket event.Congrats to Harold on his 3rd place fi nish taking home $100.

Bernie and Bobby would do the secret handshake and split the $480 remaining prize so we really don’t know what would have happened there. Darn… that would have been a good match to see, and I’m sure the live-stream viewers would have enjoyed it as well. Congrats to Bernie and Bobby, each took home $240 for their efforts.

A special thank you goes out to Kolby’s Corner Pocket for making the room available.

Our sister tournament plays next month Feb 11th at Bullshooters in Phoenix and we’ll be back here at Kolby’s on Feb 25th.

Masked Player Ice Cold at Bullshooters

Bullshooters One Pocket Madness was another successful event with a full fi eld of sixteen players as well as a couple players were turned away.

The early favorite in this one appeared to be a mysterious masked man (he didn’t play in the mask) whose frosty cold game earned him a spot in the hot-seat match against Jose Gonzales. Gonzales thawed out the masked man a little with a 2-1 scoreline in the hot-seat match.

On the one loss side, the masked man froze out Lee Collins to earn another shot at Gonzales in the fi nals.

Gonzales would have to settle for second place on this day as the masked man put on a clinic in “Power One Pocket” on his way to a lopsided 3-1 win.

1st Masked Marauder $2402nd Jose Gonzales $1703rd Lee Collins $1004th Gus Briseno $70

Big Turnout at Kitty’s ScotchAn amazing 27 scotch doubles teams came to Kitty’s on January 28th, ready to do battle for over $1,400 in prize money

The hot seat match found Joe Nicita & Lefty pitted against Steve Deluna & Tom-my Lutz. This match ended with Steve & Tommy winning the hot seat. At the same time, Hop-pel Ampongan & George Bell played John Sauer & Jack Mayer for 4th place. After an exciting match, Hoppel & George garnered 4th place and $120.

After coming through the loser side, Jack & John found themselves facing Joe & Lefty for 3rd place. After a great match, Joe & Lefty came away with 3rd and $ 140.

By the end of the evening, Steve & Tommy were facing Jack & John to decide 1st and 2nd. After pulling out all the stops, Steve & Tommy claimed 1st and Jack & John second. For their efforts, Steve & Tommy took home $ 555 and Jack & John took home $ 555.

As always, Kitty and her staff provided a great venue and excellent service.

Lovelace holds off Johnny Z.Chad Lovelace held home fi eld advantage and he needed all the help he could get as he won the Kitty’s Monthly 7’s & Under 9-ball event.

Lovelace (the bartender at Kitty’s) played well all day and took the hot-seat from Sara Miller 6-4.

On the one loss side, Johnny Z. was making the most of his fi rst big event in years. Johnny had lost hill0-hill to Miller earlier in the day, but had been tearing through the one loss side. He eliminated Jack Cheesman 7-4 and found himself with a chance for revenge against Miller. Once again they went hill-hill, but this time it was Johnny with the win.

The fi nals between Chad and Johnny started with Chad in control at 2-0, but a 9-ball skid seemed to get into Chad’s head and that was all Johnny needed to regain his confi dence. Johnny won the fi rst match hill-hill and the two players were forced to play another match to determine a winner. The second set was better for Lovelace as he won the match 6-3 for the tournament win.

Payouts:Chad Lovelace $330Johnny Z. $210Sara Miller $40
