Well the first run of the year, and our first Runch Run ever is in the books and it was definitely a success. We left Timbers with 13 cars led by a metal car (unfortunately it’s not May yet). In attendance were Tony and Paula Megowan, Frank and Barbara Lo-Monaco, Fred Markley and Marilyn, Den-nis Trammell, Peter Mackins, Ray Tracy and Ursula, Ray Seider and Gretchen

Falvo, Jacques and Yuriko Bellesiles, Sandy Halverson, Steve and Lin-da Petersen, Hans and Maria Loesche, and Dave and Deborah Hanks. We were met at Industrial Eats by Ed Clerkin and sister Kathy, and Jim and Judy Wafer.

After a short drive up Highway 101 to Buellton we arrived at Industrial Eats. It is located in a little non-descript business park but the food and service are excellent. We were seated at three long tables and took up over half of the restaurant.

We sampled several of their favorites from pizza to salads to sandwiches and shrimp. All of it was fantastic. As good as the food and service was the company was even better. I am hoping more of you will attend these Runch Runs and take the opportuni-ty to get to know your fellow club mem-bers. We really are a fun group once you get to know us.

As I pen my message to you I’m in the Dallas – Fort Worth metroplex visiting my son and his family and my goddaughter and her family. Ever since Tony told me he was ordering his new Vette in Long Beach red I have been interested in seeing the color in person. I thought with Dallas – Fort Worth, being just slightly larger than Santa Barbara, there would be a good chance I would find a dealership with a Long Beach Red Vette in stock. Sure enough, not far from my goddaughter’s home was Stonebriar Chevrolet. This dealership was about the size of the six dealerships in the Hope Avenue auto center combined. I guess everything really is bigger in Texas. Stonebriar had 12 Corvettes in stocking including three Z06s and one Z07 and yes one Long Beach Red Stingray. Tony, you and Paula made a great choice, that color is beautiful. It’s similar to but not exactly like the burgundy color on your previous Vette but one beautiful color.

I’m very optimistic for the club in the upcoming year. Attendance at the meetings has been increasing and I have received positive feedback on our speakers. At the February meeting Tony Megowan will be making a presentation on planning and executing a successful run and the importance and enjoyment of having your vehicles equipped with a CB radio. This was to have taken place January but was delayed due to weather. January 17 saw the inaugural Corvette Club Santa Barbara “Runch Run”. Again the idea of these was to put together short runs, ideally half day that would be held on Sunday to include those who for one reason or another cannot make the Saturday runs. We had a great turn out for the run to International Eats in Buellton where the proprietor provided a sampling of a number of menu items. Another reason for my optimism is the glimpses I had at the work Ed Clerkin has done on our already award winning website. Fred Smith has done a masterful job on the website for many years as wit-nessed by many top website awards Fred has won on behalf of the club from the National Museum. The work Ed has done will take the current site and add features including but not limited to making it easier to sign-up for runs and to get reminders of upcoming events. For those who are looking forward to the prospects of a mid-engine Vette you might want to click on the address below. According to the author there may be a few bugs to work out first. http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a27957/avoidable-contact-mid-engined-corvette/ We all are very lucky to have such talented individuals that keep this organization active and vital. With

February being Valentine month you all have my heartfelt thanks and gratitude. I’ll see you all Tuesday.

Well our first two runs of the year are in the books. The Runch Run to Industrial Eats and the run to the Hot Rod Show (article will be next month for that one) were fun and different.

In February we will have two events. The Super Bowl Party at Steve and Linda Petersen’s and the Daytona 500 Party at Hib and Sandy Halverson’s. Both of these events are al-ways well attended and a lot of fun. I will email the details as I get them.

For March we have 3 runs planned. We will be moving the Winos Gone Wild Run to Satur-day the 12th of March.

Now it’s time to climb on my soapbox. We plan these runs for all of you. A lot of planning and effort goes into these runs by the people leading them. I know things come up but if at all possible if you have signed up for a run please do your best to attend. And if you do have to cancel be sure to do as soon as you know. Some of the runs have to be prepaid so it will save having to pay for a run you signed up for but cannot attend. Not only have the run leaders put in a lot of effort, but the places we show up at will some-times go out of their way to make it special for us. It is not fair to them to tell them 25 or 30 people will show up and then only 10 or 15 show up. We have a lot of fun on these runs and I highly recommend you join us.

Ok now I am back off of the soapbox. With the advent of the new website you will be able to sign up for runs online. This should make it easier for everyone involved. You will get an email saying you have signed up and I will get one also. All of the run information will also be on the website. I think once you get used to this you will agree it is the way to go. [Editor Note: you will be advised when the new website is live and you will receive instructions on how to adjust to the changes.]

This time last year, we asked: Will Gordon retire after Homestead. Yep, he did. But...Kyle Bush, the 2015 Champion? For sure, we didn't see that coming! As for questions about 2016? Well...here's a biggie: When's the date of Miss Sprint's retirement party and will we be invited? And, speaking of parties, where's our invite to Dale Jr.'s wedding? How will the NASCAR community accept Chase Elliott as the new driver of the 24? Will 2016 be a come-back year for the 48? And, finally, What's Pat Bloom going to do after Tony Stewart retires?

Those and other burning 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series questions will begin to be answered at…

We had not made a pilgrimage to the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, AZ since 2012. Plus, I needed to find a present for Fred’s birthday, so that seemed a perfect place for him to find something he liked. Since it is a long drive we decided to do an overnight stop in Palm Springs on the way. We arrived in Palm Springs in the early afternoon, January 26, which allowed the rest of the afternoon for enjoying the beautiful sunshine and some light shopping as a warm-up for Scottsdale. Wednesday morning, January 27, we headed to Arizona and had an easy drive. I wanted to do something special for Fred’s birthday and had heard about the fabulous sunsets from the terrace at the Wrigley Mansion in Phoe-nix. We arrived about 15 minutes before the sky began its evening show of color. It was spectacular with a color range of golds, oranges, reds, blues, and grays and absolutely did not disappoint. It must have lasted at least 30 minutes going through a range of color combinations, each new one being better than the last. We enjoyed a light dinner prepared in Geordie’s Lounge and served to us in the library. We had our own personal dining space among the furnishing from the early 1930’s. The mansion is used for events so most of the original furnishings are no longer there, but the architecture and crafts-manship in the building are impressive. Thursday, January 28, I had two museums for us to visit. First on the agenda was the Martin Auto Museum which had a nice collection of autos, neon signs, gas pumps, and other automotive related items. In the afternoon because of our association with open wheel racing with our son-in-law, Cory Kruseman, we toured the Arizona Open Wheel Racing Museum which is 14,000 sq. ft. of open wheel racing history told through race cars, drivers’ uniforms, thousands of photos, model race cars, trophies, and other memorabilia on display.

Friday, January 29, was our day at Barrett-Jackson to view the assembly of auto and truck oldies but goodies as well as the lat-est and greatest with a few “what were they thinking” in the mix. My personal fa-vorite, if I were to exclude Corvettes, was the new 2017 Acura NSX. One turn on the platform and it had me in its power. Fred dragged me away to the vendor area

where we enjoyed checking out products automotive related and non-automotive in art, clothing, furniture, jewelry, garage accessories, boats, planes, motorhomes, trailers, etc. Yes, I did find Fred a birthday present, but

it did not go across the auction stage. We are out of garage space any-way…….is that a good excuse????

Saturday before we left we had time for one more stop to visit the Penske Racing Museum. There was a private party, so we were unable to see the museum. No prob-lem, we just spent the time checking out

the cars in the dealerships in the auto row. These included Maserati, Bentley, Lambor-ghini, Jaguar, Range Rover, Ferrari, Por-sche, etc. We were now satisfied that we had done our best to partake in everything an automobile enthusiast should see in the area and we happily got in our Corvette and headed west.
