April 2014 Page 1 vancouver chapter DRAFT It is Spring and the time to think about bringing new blood into the chapter. We are looking for people willing to participate in various facets of the Chapter’s activities. It can be in a formal role, as a Member of the Chapter Board, less formal, as a Member of a Committee or even a project specific role. FEI is more fortunate than most volunteer organizations in that it has a very high level of engagement by its members in the activities of the Chapter. This is key to our success as member engagement is a key bottleneck in the provision of services to our chapter membership. Our resources are modest and properly so in order to ensure that our membership is served for a reasonable cost. The makes our ability to draw on the energies of the chapter volunteers all the more critical. To that end, we can offer an ability to make a contribution to any member that desires. However, our most critical area is events, as our events are the key value that drives the satisfaction of our members. With the introduction of the Roundtables this year, there is a unique opportunity for this. By their nature, Roundtables are a very grassroots initiative. About ten or twelve members of similar interests come together and discuss issues of mutual concern. These issues can be any issue that concerns. We need people to suggest ideas, outline agendas or points of discussion, communicate to fellow members and even moderate. Members can get together as often as they like and the FEI Chapter can arrange for meeting venues, ensure that they PD is recorded and cover the costs. While the Roundtables offer a unique opportunity for member engagement, we are not limited to those. As an example, I would like to commend our member, Neil Hummel, for taking the initiative and creating the opportunity for a joint Golf Tournament this summer with Business in Vancouver and the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG). Details are in the events section. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or any member of the board if you have any desire or ideas for contributing to the Chapter.    We have been getting great feedback from our membership on the variety of events that we have held thus far.  The introduction of the CFO Roundtable events has been a great “value add” to our members and we are continuing to partner up with other organizations to bring the best lineup of events, so that our members see the “relevance” of being an FEI member.  The FEI Canada Conference will be taking place from June 4th to 6th at breath‐taking Niagara Falls and the theme this year is “Leadership Beyond Finance”.  There is an exceptional lineup of keynote speakers and panel members which include some of the following:

Branding the CFO – Brian Lawson, CFO, Brookfield Asset Management and Canada’s 2013 CFO of the Year, and JP Lacroix, President, Shikatani Lacroix

Board Expectations of the CFO – Maureen Sabia, Chairman of Canadian Tire

Innovation – Dan Fortin, President, IBM Canada and Glenn Kerrick, President & CEO, Alma CG

Funding our  Retirement – Jim Leech, former President & CEO, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Fund, and Bill Morneau, Executive Chairman, Morneau Sheppell

Remember, as a new member you can qualify to attend this Conference for free.  So, please reach out to your friends & colleagues to promote this fantastic opportunity to join FEI Canada as well as attend the Conference, which has a value of $1,699.00

At this time, I want to welcome our newest FEI members as follows:

Peter Hardie, CPA, CA ‐ VP, Finance – Nevsun Resources Ltd.

Dave Heffelfinger, CPA, CMA – CFO & Controller – Pacific Western Brewing Company

Steven Lee, CPA, CA ‐ VP Finance & Operations – Mobify Research & Development Inc.

Craig McLeod, CPA, CGA, CFA ‐ Finance Professional – BC Hydro

Natalie Tran, CPA, CA – Recruiting Manager – Mercer Bradley (former Director, Business Planning at Health Shared Services of BC)

Grant Bettesworth, VP, Operations – Wilson M. Beck Insurance Services

It is great to see so many new members joining the FEI Vancouver Chapter, so I encourage everyone again to invite a prospective FEI member out to our events as your guest.  Referrals are still the best way to bring a member to our Chapter.  See you soon at a future FEI event!

Professional Designations: Changing With The Times

I find it sobering to realize that it was 50

years ago this year that I became a

Chartered Accountant (CA).

Fifteen years later, I became an Associate of

the Insurance Institute of Canada (AIIC) and

expected to be Hugh Lindsay, CA, AIIC for

the rest of my life.

It wasn’t to be.

The Insurance Institute modernized its

education program and changed its

designation in 2000, so I became a Chartered

Insurance Professional (CIP).

In 2001, I was honoured to be elected a

Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of BC

(FCA).

And in 2014, I become a Chartered

Professional Accountant (CPA) with the

merging of Canada’s leading accounting

bodies.

It’s disconcerting to have to adapt to a new

professional identity but exciting when I

consider the significance of what is

happening.  We tend to talk loosely of

professional qualifications as if they were

university degrees (I don’t have one)—but

that isn’t true.  They represent long‐term

relationships with dynamic professions that

adapt over time to meet the changing needs

of their members and the public they serve.

I’m proud of my new designations, and what

they signify.
