A CENTURY OF CELEBRATIONS On Wednesday, April 21st, a Ferryhill resident celebrated the fantastic achievement of reaching his 100th birthday. Vivian Woodward, who shares his birthday with the queen, was born a century ago in West Cornforth. He moved to Ferryhill when he was three years-old. At 15, Viv began working for Mainsforth Colliery after ambitions of obtaining a clerical job fell through. He stayed at the colliery, working at the bank side and in the lamp cabin until he was 21. Later, he began working for his dad, Adam Woodward in his radio spares shop, before finding employment in the lamp cabin at Bishop Middleham during the war. He eventually returned to Mainsforth Colliery, where he stayed until the pit closed. Viv was happily married to Beatrice for 64 years, until she sadly passed away in 1999. As newlyweds, the couple lived in Morrison Terrace, before moving to Bowes Close in 1985, where Viv stills lives independently today. The couple had two children together, Brian, 75, and Jean, 73, as well as a 41 year-old Grandson Tim and two great- grandchildren. Viv says that the love of his life is music. He played the fiddle as a boy and progressed to cello, playing at Majestic Picture House until the ‘talkies’ came along. The centurian, who still takes care of himself and is as bright as a button, celebrated his birthday with a party. During the event, £110 was raised, which Viv very kindly donated to the Mayor of Ferryhill’s charities.

Dog owners are being offered free chips for their pets.Durham County Council and Stray Aid will be running free mircochipping sessions at venues in South Durham during May.The sessions, which are part of the council’s work to promote responsible dog ownership, will take place at Shildon Market Place, Church Street, on Saturday, May 15th, and Fishburn Community Centre car park, Butterwick Road, on Saturday, May 29th.Stray Aid’s Animal Ambulance will be carrying out free chipping between 10.00am and 2.00pm at each venue.Andy Denholm, Durham County Council Envirocrime Coordinator, said, “Animals that have been microchipped have their own unique code number. This number and the owner’s details are then added to a national database.“This means that if a dog that is lost or stolen is found it is easier to return

it to its owner. Although the law states that all dogs should wear a collar and tag showing their owner’s name or address, these can fall off or get lost. Microchips are a permanent but harmless way of identifying your pet.”

A search is under way to find young people in County Durham with an outstanding school attendance record.Durham County Council wants to find all teenagers in their final year at secondary school and all children in their last year at primary school who have a 100 per cent attendance record to invite them to a

SEARCH FOR 100 PER CENT SCHOOL ATTENDEES

special celebration. The young people will receive an award to mark the outstanding achievement of not missing even half a day in class throughout their whole secondary or primary career. The award will include a tour of St James’ Park, the home of Newcastle United, and a presentation dinner with their families.

Parents who think their son or daughter has 100 per cent attendance record to date should contact their school immediately. To be eligible for the award, the attendance must continue to be 100 per cent until the pupil’s official leaving date in summer.Durham County Council is also checking with schools to see who might qualify.

Micro-chipping allows dogs to be easily reunited with their owners if they go missing.

Further sessions are due to take place in other locations around the county in the future. For more information about free mircochipping call Andy on 01388 816 166 ext. 8842 or visit www.strayaid.co.uk

NHS Blood and Transplant are asking people this month to think of others that are less fortunate, such as those that need life saving blood treatments and give blood to help save lives. As donated blood has a limited shelf life, at just 35 days for red blood cells and just five days for platelets, it is crucial that new donors come forward regularly to ensure the vital supplies of blood needed by hospitals are readily available.

Craig Taylor spokesperson for NHS Blood and Transplant said “Donated blood is used in accident and emergency situations, by cancer sufferers and in surgery. It is also used by people suffering from blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia that need blood transfusions every four weeks. If you’ve ever wanted to be a donor but not got around to it, now is the time to act.”The process of giving blood takes around an hour - with the

actual donation taking about fifteen minutes.A blood drive will be taking place at Ferryhill Leisure Centre on Monday, May 24th, betweem 2.30pm and 4.00pm and between 4.30pm and 7.00pm. A session will also be taking place at Spennymoor Town Hall on Monday, May 4th, between 3.00pm and 4.30pm and between 5.00pm and 7.00pm.For further information, contact 0117 969 24 44.

Bishop Middleham, entered Grinton House in Ferryhill with another unknown person. The property was empty, awaiting renovation, due to a recent fire. Two people were seen leaving the property and a holdall containing power tools was later recovered.

    IT’S A WASH OUT!

    Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,This week I, like most of the residents of Ferryhill, have received a leaflet from the group F.A.I.R. Was I the only one who was horrified and saddened by what it revealed? The content was undoubtedly shocking, a Council that manipulates stats, spends our money as though they had

won the lottery, changes the 'rules'to suit themselves... Why did they do this? Possibly because they could, and this is what saddens me. The apathy we all exhibit, myself included, has resulted in Ferryhill having the Council we deserve.Did you complete the survey? No? Neither did I, why?

Because you, like me, probably thought it doesn't matter what I think they will do what they want anyway, and it looks as though we were right. If this small example is echoed, and I suspect it will be, in the forthcoming National Election...God help us!!

Name and address witheld on request.

Dear Editor,In reply to Alan S Holmes, and my 'outspoken attack', it is perfectly reasonable to reply to a suggestion that, though not named, myself and others who are elected representatives of our communities are 'jumping on a bandwagon' in supporting

Help for Heroes. In that respect, the use of the word 'Aligning' in the original letter, was used in a manner to suggest this. I have no shame in being associated with Help for Heroes and will continue to give any support I can when my term of office is over. In quoting me you did

not insert inverted commas around the word 'Aligning' as I did in my letter, which does change the context and, whether this was done deliberately or by mistake, to quote yourself 'you cannot get away with that!'

    Mayor of Chilton,Len Potts.

Ferryhill Town Youth’s Under 8s played away to Bishop Auckland St Mary’s on Tuesday, April 13th. This game was always going to be a tough game against a strong St Mary’s side, but Ferryhill came out on top with some good football, winning the game 2 – 1. Ferryhill’s scorers were Lewis Pearson and Harrison Webster, with Man-of-the-Match going to Lewis Pearson.

James Edmond on the podium at the World Mountain Bike Cup at Dalby Forest.

A MIXED BAG FOR FERRYHILL TOWN YOUTH

The Ferryhill Wheelers Mountain High Race Team enjoyed its first major successes of the season at the World Cup Mountain Bike event at Dalby Forest recently. James Edmond was riding in one of the supporting events, the Dalby Dare. This junior competition was a showcase for some of the best British talent, but also had an international flavour with riders travelling from overseas to participate. James's race was on the main World Cup course and was a fast and furious ride. After successfully negotiating the more technical sections of the course, James finished a clear winner, sprinting up the finish straight in front

of a huge crowd. James was awarded his medal on the main

podium by World Downhill Champion, Steve Peat.

    MAJOR SUCCESS FOR FERRYHILL WHEELERS
