Ferryhill pupils help launch initiative to tackle hate crime Pupils at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College helped Durham Police Commis- sioner, Ron Hogg launch the Hate Crime Resource Pack aimed at tackling hate crimes. Ferryhill’s long-running summer gala has been scrapped as a result of falling visitor numbers. Ferryhill Town Council clerk, Derek Snowball said: “The Ferryhill 2000 Com- mittee which organises the gala wanted to keep it going as it was something that families could enjoy. “The problem was that the falling visitor numbers didn’t make it worthwhile. Unfortunately it was not well attended and so it has gone.” The report to the Town Council said that when the Summer Gala was estab- lished in the year 2000 it was initially well received and attended. However the attendance last year “has seen a continued reduction in at- tendance figures,” while some events had to be scrapped as a result of lack of interest. The report proposed that the Gala “is discontinued and the 2000 Committee is to research and make contact with local organi- sations to identify if they wish to provide/become more involved in other smaller events in different locations throughout the town.” Mr Snowball added: “Now it is planned to try to arrange a number of smaller events to be held throughout the year at locations round the town.” The town council has received a request from Turner’s Funfair, which provided fairground rides during the gala, to allow it to continue to host its own event. The proposal to place fair- ground rides in the market place on Saturday, 15, and Sunday, 16, August was due to be considered at the Town Council meeting as this week’s paper was going to press. The Surtees Arms celebrates latest real ale award

Ferryhill Station local, the Surtees Arms is raising a glass to celebrate being crowned Camra Durham Country Pub of the Year 2015.The award-winning pub is run by Alan Hogg, 42, and his wife Susan, 40, who were delighted to win: “We are very proud, especially given the increasing number of quality ales houses in the region,” said Alan. “It is testament to the hard work put in by the staff.”The pub is no stranger to picking up awards, having been named North-East Camra Pub of the Year in

2010, Durham Camra Pub of the Year in 2010 and 2011, and Durham Camra Pub of the Year runner-up in 2014.As well as stocking a range of real ales, the pub also brews its own at the Yard of Ale Brewery next door. The latest award follows hard on the heels of a recent “Best in Category” award from the Beamish Hall Hotel Beer Festival in November for the Yard of Ale Brewery’s One Yard Beyond cask lager.A Camra spokesman said: “The Surtees is a good community pub, welcoming locals and visitors alike. So

it’s well worth a visit and the award deserved.“Though it is a requirement that cask ale is sold in a pub for it to be in with a chance of winning an award, there is much more than that to be considered in being a good pub.“Other items include com-munity involvement, atmos-phere, range and quality of beers, events held, value for money, friendliness, customer service and so on.”The Surtees will now par-ticipate in the regional section of the national competition.

The Surtees Arms is once again amongst the CAMRA Awards, this time for Durham Country Pub of the Year 2015.

NEED AN ELECTRICIAN?

The Mayor of Ferry-hill, Councillor Pauline Crathorne, is holding a Charity Night in Ferry-hill Workingmen’s Club on Friday 30th January, from 7.15pm until 11pm. Tickets are £5 each and are available from Ferry-hill Town Hall, Ferryhill Workingmen’s Club or by calling 07724 761 432. Entertainment will be provided by Mark Elvis Nixon, ‘A Tribute to the King’, and there will also be a raffle draw. All funds raised will be donated to Ferryhill Town Youth and Ferryhill Girl Guides.

Ferryhill beauty, Kaitlyn Hemmings is one of 20 young women, shortliste-led from a group of over 100 contestants, who have made it through to Semi-Final Heat 3 of this year’s Miss England contest.Kaitlyn is asking readers to help her to reach the semi final proper by taking part in the national vote. Only one of the shortlist-ed ladies will win through to the semi finals stage and the public vote will form one of the judging votes that help choose the heat winner. According to the com-petition website: “The twenty finalists were chosen from over 100 contestants who attended auditions at The Sanctu-ary Workshops, Leicester. “The public vote will now help select one winner of this heat who will go through to the Miss England semi finals held at Kelham Hall on June 12th 2015. “The public vote acts as one judge on the panel. Also judging this heat is the reigning Miss England Carina Tyrrell and the Miss England director Angie Beasley.” The public can vote for Kaitlyn in a number of ways: There will be a social media vote held on the Miss England facebook and twitter pages. Twitter users can follow the username @missenglandnews for more information. The organisers point out that winning the public vote will not guarantee winning the whole of the competition. The winner of the public vote will be guaranteed a place in the Miss Popularity round of

Reviews on Mark’s website describe his show as ‘absolutely fantastic’, with one fan even stating, “It’s like Elvis is in the room with you.”“Please come along and support this event which will benefit the youth of Ferryhill,” said a spokes-person for Ferryhill Town Council. If any local businesses or residents would like to donate a prize for the raffle, any donations would be greatly appre-ciated and can be left at Ferryhill Town Hall.

Miss England, if she is not chosen as the winner of this heat. The contestant receiv-ing the most likes in the ‘Miss Social Media Heat 3’ album on facebook, will automatically qualify for the final round of Miss Social Media, held at the Sanctuary Workshops in Leicester next May. A ‘Miss Social Media’ winner will then go forward to the Miss England semi finals at

Elvis charity night

On 19th and 20th November 2014, Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College welcomed OFSTED inspec-tors into school for their scheduled visit.Feedback to the school was overwhelmingly positive and after two days of in-spection FBEC was judged to be ‘outstanding’ for their care and guidance and ‘Good’ in all other aspects, providing all students with an effective and well-rounded education.Mr Brennan, Headteacher at FBEC stated, “I am ex-ceptionally proud of both staff and students for this achievement. It is especial-ly pleasing to receive the judgement of ‘Good’ with an increasingly tougher OFSTED framework. In the early hours of Boxing Day, police were called to a motor accident on Chilton Lane. Officers noticed the smell of alcohol on John Michael Readshaw and he subsequently failed a roadside breath test. Readshaw had driven his Nissan Micra the short

distance from his brother’s home and pleaded guilty to the charge of driving whilst over the legal limit of alcohol. Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe sentenced the defendant to 20 months driving disqualification and a fine of £215, including costs.

Ferryhill Community Part-nership, which runs the Ferryhill Hub, has had its appeal against tax-free status upheld by the Ombudsan after initially being refused in part by Ferryhill Town Council. The partnership applied in 2013 for 100 per cent non domestic rate relief from the council as a charitable organisation. The Town Council approved the application for 80 per cent mandatory rate relief but refused to apply 20 per cent discre-tionary rate relief. The partnership lodged an appeal and in a draft statement the Ombuds-man has supported the Ferryhill group.Dave Farry, chairman of the partnership, said:

“We’re pleased with the Ombudsman’s draft decision. It’s a massive boost to the partnership running the Hub.“We were always under the impression that we quali-fied for full non domestic rate relief like any other charitable organisation.“This will free up extra funds which we will look to use to replace the old heating system.“We’re looking to work closely with the county council to further improve the facilities in the Hub.”Paul Darby, the council’s head of finance, said: “We are carefully considering the Ombudsman’s views.“We will take this into account when reassessing the Hub’s applications for rate relief.”

Ferryhill mum and dad, Michelle Harwood and Liam Kelly, are fundraising for Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital after the unit saved the life of their baby girl, Layla-Rose two months ago.“When Layla was born she was suffering from Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS) which caused her lung to collapse,” explained Michelle. “We didn’t think she was going to make it until she was taken to Newcastle to the Freeman Hospital

where they kept her alive. “We are so grateful for what they did. Because of them, Layla is here with us today!“So we are putting on a charity event on the 7th of March at Ferryhill Station WMC to raise money for the PICU.“There will be a disco, a singer, tombola, raffle and many prizes to be won. Anyone wanting to come along can pay at the door. It is £2 entry for adults and children go free. The entertainment will run from 12pm till 5.30pm for

children and then 7pm till midnight for adults.”MAS can happen before, during, or after labour and delivery when a newborn inhales (or aspirates) a mixture of meconium: its first faeces, which is sticky, thick, and dark green and is typically passed in the womb during early preg-nancy, and amniotic fluid: the fluid in which the baby floats inside the amniotic sac. The inhaled fluid then causes breathing problems and in rare cases such as Laya-Rose’s, more serious complications.

Parents organise fundraiser after daughter’s life is saved

Computer shop theftMagistrates at Newton Aycliffe adjourned matters in the case of Scott Wilkin until 4th February and requested the Probation Services to provide more information on the 22 year old before sentencing.Wilkin, of Peats Build-ings, Coxhoe, had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of shop theft, but he

disputed the value of the stolen item, his solicitor stating that the shopkeep-er’s valuation of £75 was at odds with his client’s and that he had photo-graphs of the Bluetooth wireless speaker. On November 27th Wilkin and an unknown female had entered Starks Com-puters and Gaming in Fer-

ryhill and had stolen the item. A few days later a customer in the shop had requested such an item and it was only then that the owner had reviewed CCTV and discovered the theft.Wilkin, who has a lengthy record, claimed that the speaker was on sale for £15 or £20.

The Ferryhill bowlers were involved in two games last week.In the first game the men, in confident mood follow-ing their recent 5-0 win over Houghton, travelled to Hartlepool IBC in search of more points.Unfortunately they were brought crashing to earth with a 0-5 defeat as they came up against a very skilful home side. After a slow start where they dropped nine shots in two ends Bob Jefferson's rink fought back and after 10 ends were only one shot adrift. However, from there on, the home side stepped up a gear and went on to score

12 shots without reply to inflict a 13 shot defeat on the Ferryhill rink.Keith Seymour suffered a similar fate. Restricted to only four scoring ends, his rink losing out by 15 shots.Walter Latimer's rink faired much better. In a low scoring game where only three of the fifteen ends had a score above one the Ferryhill bowlers lost out by three shots.Final scores: W Latimer 8-11 M Hagon, R Jefferson 10-23 F Taylor, K Seymour 6-21 T Barnes. The second game featured the Ferryhill Lady bowlers who entertained the ladies of Durham IBC in a friendly match.

The two previous encoun-ters both ended in wins for Ferryhill and this game went the same way.Two of the rinks produced home victories with June Cadman's providing an 18 shot win with the visitors reduced to scoring on only four ends.Shirley Maughan skipped her rink to an eight shot victory but on the third rink Margaret Shield was not as successful. Level at the 10th end they lost control and dropped eight shots over the last five ends eventually losing out by seven shots.Final scores: M Shield 8-15 K Maughan 18-10 P Miller, J Cadman 22-4 J Kelly.

Ferryhill Celtic played in the quarter final of the County Cup at the weekend at last year’s finalists Stockton Hardwick, backed by a great travelling support. The first 20 minutes were a tense affair, but as the half went on Celtic started to get on top and the first chance fell to Shane Todd who was inches from connecting with a Luke Thompson cross with the goal gaping. Next to go close was Liam Taylor with a 30 yard shot which the keeper could only parry for a corner. Celtic were now visibly growing in confidence and pushing for the opening goal but with only a minute re-maining in the half Stockton took the lead when a free kick came into the box and

was vollyed home for a half time lead against the run of play. The second half started the same as the first and again it was Celtic who came closest but Shane Todd shot on the hour was straight at the keeper. The game was effectively over five minutes later when when a mix up led to the Stockton centre forward heading the ball into an empty net to make it three-nil. And it was to get worse for the Celtic four minutes later when Stockton scored a fourth with a drive from the edge of the box.Celtic could easily have thrown the towel in at this stage but instead they dis-played the heart that had got them to this stage of

the tournament and were rewarded with 10 minutes remaining when Liam Pearson curled a stunning free kick around the wall into the top corner. A couple of minutes and the glimmer of a sensational comeback was on when Jay White struck a superb half volley which the keeper could do nothing about. But in the end the late goals proved no more than a consolation as the cup run came to an end against a formidable opponent.Celtic have a chance to bounce straight back with two more cup semi finals in the next couple of weeks starting with a mouthwa-tering derby tie against Aycliffe Club at home on Sunday. Kick off is at 10:30am.
