elcome to our 2013 Festival of New Homes, West University’spresentation of spectacular new residences that exemplify thecharacter and stature of the City.From its inception over 75 yearsago as an innovative township tothe prestige it now suggests, WestUniversity Place continues to be alocation favored by top custombuilders. Administrative Offices are in the City of West University MunicipalBuilding, the hub for efficient delivery of City services.
Playground equipment, picnic areas, gazebos,shade arbors, courts for volleyball, basketball,tennis and soccer...West U’s emphasis on itsparks goes back to its beginnings. This priorityto maintain and expand the City’s quality of lifeis evidenced by its volunteer-based organization,The Friends of West University Place Parks, dedicated to raising funds to improve the parksand green spaces in the City.

The Library is part of Harris County’sPublic Library System...the only branch located inside Loop 610. TheCommunity Building, with auditorium,stage, activity and meeting rooms, isalso home to Senior Services.
West U boasts a Police Dept. known forits exemplary level of service and crimeprevention and a staff of full-time firefighters and emergency technicians.
West University Elementary School is one of the manyexcellent public and private schools located in the Cityand surrounding areas.
he idea for a community of homes in the area that is nowWest University was conceived in 1910 by then Governor ofTennessee Ben W. Hooper. That year, he bought a tract of landsouthwest of Houston out of an old Spanish land grant. Its proximity to Rice University led to the name West University Place.
The first lots were put up for sale on April 1, 1917. The cost for a 100’ x 200’ lot was $1000, and houses were required tocost a minimum of $2500. Homes facing Buffalo Speedway wereto be at least $4000, and facing Bellaire Blvd., $5000. By 1923,there were only 40 families living in the poorly drained swamp.
Dissatisfied with muddy streets, the lack of schools and fireprotection and other services, residents joined in a series oftown meetings that resulted in the incorporation of the City in1924. For six years, the creation of a sound infrastructure wasparamount...building streets, establishing natural gas and watersupplies, police and fire protection, postal delivery...everythingrequired to make West University Place a workable community.
Knowing that such a community must include areasfor families to enjoy safe outdoor recreation, the City developedits first park, Wier Park, in 1930.
With a history and philosophy that combines rich tradition andresponsible innovation, over the years, West University has come tobe recognized as one of Houston’s most desirable neighborhoods.
ivic-minded citizens have created a community—and a way of life—that focuses on the spirit of itsfoundation. With most of its park land donated by earlyresidents and developers, West U continues to take pride inthe greenery and open recreational space offered at thesix parks existing today.
