They reviewed records for 117 patients with a history of treatment-resistant schizophrenia who received clozapine at a mean dosage of 237 mg/day for > 1 year (mean 4 years). The data analysis showed a significant decrease in the mean number of hospitalisations after long-term clozapine treatment (from 1.85 before clozapine treatment to 0.4 thereafter). Furthermore, the mean duration of hospitalisation stay was significantly shorter (reduced from 117 to 30 days) and the number of hospital days per year significantly smaller (reduced from 30 to 7 days) after clozapine treatment.
